Barely more than 2 weeks ago, Rasmussen Reports flashed the headline "Hillary pummels Thompson". That poll showed Hillary with a prohibitive 52-37 lead in the race for the White House.Now, 16 days later, the race is at 47-45.It is true that Rudy's numbers have improved against her evilness as well (going from 7 down to up by 2) but his improvement was not as dramatic as Thompson and I still believe Guiliani is playing the role of the generic candidate.With Guiliani at +2 and Thompson at -2, both are within the statistical margin of error with the wicked witch. Yet, Thompson has gone from -15 to -2, an improvement of 13 points in 2 weeks.He clearly has lower name id. He clearly has more room to grow. It's not clear to me exactly whether this will be bad for the growing Fred Thompson candidacy. But he's laconically admitted that he only goes to church very sporadically. I can't imagine social conservatives, the vast bulk of whom consider themselves religious, are going to like this about Right Said Fred. Thompson says (in mitigation) that he's "right with God" and continues to describe himself as a member of the Church of Christ, a Protestant denomination which has a fairly strict interpretation of the Bible. It's difficult to predict, based just on this, whether this remark will cost him appreciable support and so I can't decide yet whether this qualifies as a gaffe. Comments on the WaPo site by self-identified religious people are a mixed bag in their reaction to the story. So while this might be of no effect it can't be called good news for Thompson.

There has been a lot of hoopla and high expectations over the possibility of a Fred Thompson presidential campaign. Numerous people have even used the word Reaganesque to describe the ex two term Senator from Tennessee. And while I see nothing that I dislike about Fred Thompson I think this is a good example of how desperately conservatives want a true conservative candidate and they just are not seeing that in the other Republican candidates. Most of the other candidates have either 1) serious personal baggage or 2) a very mixed non-traditional conservative message. Even when a partisan publication like Salon writes an article that is very much a puff piece on a republican (almost) candidate for the White House in 08 they still cant resist feeding their own BDS. The article is almost gushing about Fred Thompson but still has the obligatory slaps at President Bush. I sometimes wonder if they are afraid they might lose their ACLU membership cards if they do not make their quota of Bush insults every month. This is an excellent commentary on illegal immigration by Fred Thompson. We just had three college kids killed in New Jersey by an illegal alien. He had been arrested twice, once for raping a five-year-old girl and then released. The city this happened in was Newark, one of a number of Sanctuary Cities. Mass media coverage of the 2008 presidential primary campaigns has been shameful at best, with an increasing trend at editorializing all matters, as opposed to merely reporting on them. The result is the marginalization of candidates who the media fails to declare as front-runners (Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, etc). What's even more shameful, however, is how one *candidate* has been delaying the official start of his campaign to take advantage of that same media group.
The Fred Thompson phenomenon has been interesting to say the least. Even before he has come close to announcing an intention to run for the Presidency in 08 he has been seen as the conservative frontrunner by many. I think this is an indication of how much Republicans want a traditional conservative candidate on the ballot. The Republican base is more than just slightly tired of the Bush administration and its strikingly non conservative approach to governance. Frankly people are tired of big government, open borders and a non responsive White House and they think a Thompson administration would be very different. What is going to be ironic in the extreme is when not only are the Democrats extolling the shortcomings and failures of the Bush Presidency (even though he cant run again) but the Republican candidates are likely to position themselves as the anti-Bush.
