Vaccine Blamed for the Worst Flu Season in Four Years
The current flu season is shaping up to be the worst in four years, partly because the vaccine didn't work well against the viruses that made most people sick. The 2007-2008 season started slowly, peaked in mid-February, and now seems to be declining. Based on adult deaths from flu and pneumonia, this season is the worst since 2003-2004. This year, the vaccine was only 44 percent effective, according to a study. Each year, the flu results in 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths.

How Will You Look in Four Years (When You're President)
I got this interesting "exercise" :) from popphoto.com where each candidate took about four hours of retouching. To mimic the ravages of time, they did the following:- Used the Burn and Dodge tools to deepen wrinkles and paint in age spots.- Cloned the eyebrows and moved them lower.- Used the Liquify filter to hollow out cheeks, make jowls, thin out lips, and enlarge ears and noses.- For Clinton and Obama, brought in forehead wrinkles from separate photos and used the Match Color tool to blend them in.- For Obama, painted in gray hair on top of his current hair; for Clinton, desaturated with the Sponge tool to make her grayer. Then another usage of these public figures' faces with digital imaging I found in this really smart ad, coming out on perfect timing, utilizing the moment. This remind

Italian Consumer Optimism Tumbles to Lowest in Four Years
Italian consumer confidence fell to the lowest in almost four years in March as rising prices and slowing economic growth sapped optimism in Europe's fourth- biggest economy. The Rome-based Isae Institute's index, based on a survey of 2,000 families, fell to 99 from a revised 102.8 last month. The reading was lower than the median forecast of 102.4 by 17 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. Today's reading is the lowest since May 2004.Italians have been cutting back on their spending, which makes up two-thirds of the $2 trillion economy, as a surge in the cost of food and transportation curbs disposable income. ISAE predicts the Italian economy will grow as little as 0.5 percent this year, the slowest pace since 2003. Oil prices above $100 a barrel have driven the Italian inflation rate t

Properties in central Jerusalem neighborhoods - Talbieh, the German Colony and Rehavia - have nearly doubled in price in the last four years
Property deals in the second half of 2007 were closing at levels similar to the first half of 2007, as israel real estate price increases began slowing. The flow of overseas buyers has slowed greatly in recent months. The primary explanation for this slowdown is the economic crisis in the U.S. and the collapse of the dollar. Nevertheless, there is a feeling among prospective apartment buyers that Jerusalem property owners are asking too much for exclusive homes."There certainly is a slowdown," one agent says. "There is a feeling that while foreign residents behaved naively in the past and bought just about anything for any price, they are now wiser."

Home values now the best in four years
Apparently the slump in home prices has happened so fast in many markets that home prices are the most affordable in four years. According to some number crunching done by lender National City and Global Insight, 88% of the 330 metro areas studied showed improvements in affordability that make them more in line with long-term averages. Still, due to enormous negative press, depressing consumer psychology and a serious credit crunch, housing affordability may dip below its long-term trend line before eventually rebounding. From a CNNMoney.com story:Home prices have dropped so quickly and so far that valuations - the difference between what a home should cost and its actual price - are the lowest they've been since 2004, according to a report. The Cleveland-based bank National City Corp.

      Four Years Just Like That
Thing 1 just turned four. I go back and forth on whether the time has gone by fast or not. In some ways, it has been a blur, and I remember clearly when there was just one Thing and that was about all I could possibly handle. Now there are three of them, and I probably handle better than I did back then. Then, there are times 4 years seems like a very, very long time, and I can’t even remember what it was like before kids. Oh well, I’m sure the next 4 years will go even faster. Here is some video from the party, held at a kid’s gym. A bit much for a kid’s party? Are you kidding? Do you think I’d have that many kids in my house? The video is from the end of the party, where they have the birthday boy put on a crown and hand out the all important goody bags.

Property tax roll sees smallest gain in four years
More news about the state of the Orange County real estate market, this time from Assessor Webster Guillory. Orange County property assessments increased 8.34 percent during the 2007-08 fiscal year. That's the smallest tax assessment increase in the county since 2003, and the third smallest increase in the past decade. In the past year, the tax rolls increased from $377 billion to almost $409 billion. Because Prop. 13 caps assessment increases at 2 percent a year, the change is primarily a measure of property sales and new construction. (Sales accounted for 62% of the increase, and construction accounted for 12%.) Here are tax roll increases for the past 10 years (dollars in billions): Year Increase Pct. Change 2007 $31.5 8.34% 2006 $38.0 11.21% 2005 $30.6 9.90% 2004 $24.7 8.71% 2003 $18.1 6.82% 2002 $20.7 8.43% 2001 $20.8 9.26% 2000 $19.7 9.64% 1999 $16.4 8.72% 1998 $10.2 5.74% -- Jeff Collins

Four Years Later, Mission NOT Accomplished
Remember this? Next month, thousands upon thousands of kids, including my neighbor across the street whom I used to babysit, will graduate high school. Today, I remembered coming home from school where we were talking about this very video and catching my then 14 year old neighbor across the street who told me she was going to the same high school as me. Next month, she will graduate high school. Meanwhile, in Iraq, nothing has changed, in fact it's gotten worse, and in the four years my neighbor has been in high school, the Mission has NOT been Accomplished. THIS is the moment Bush flushed his political legacy down the toilet.

Mitsubishi turns a profit for the first time in four years
In recent years, Mitsubishi's cross-town counterparts, Honda and Toyota, have been racking up record sales and profits, with the former showing steady growth, while the latter is taking over the world. Unfortunately, the tri-diamond folks haven't been fairing nearly as well. Mitsubishi has been in the red for four years now, mainly due to lackluster products (EVO aside) and a number of scandals that involved cover-ups and quality issues.[Source: Autoblog]Continued- ArticleAs of yesterday, that's all changed – well, at least the automaker's bottom line. For the first time since the fiscal year 2002 (ends in March), Mitsubishi has turned a profit of 8.7 billion yen or $73 million US. The reason for the turnaround stems from a weak yen and an annual sales increase of around four-percent.Hopefully, that incremental growth on Mitsu's part can be sustained and from what we've been told by the automaker's execs, sales of the new Lancer are a big part of it. If Mitsubishi can extend s

Four Years in Iraq: Forgive Us Father For We Have Sinned
Warning: Division by zero in /homepages/22/d95365795/htdocs/blog/wp-content/plugins/tla_76261.php on line 407 These words come from a Soldier who has fought in this battle. The news article reads: Sgt. Mathew Gonzalez said his decal that reads “Lord please forgive me, I have committed sins for our freedom” is a message he created to show that as a Catholic he believes he did sin by killing someone in Iraq. Today marks four years since our country declared war with Iraq. Noble men and women, innocent children, killed and being killed on both sides of this war. It’s no secret that I think this war is wrong. I think all war is wrong, I don’t believe it is ever the necessary or best option. However, my goal today isn’t to make a case for or against, I believe this is a moment and a time to lament the lose of the past four years. Lament the lose of soldiers, Iraqi and USA. Lament the deaths of children, elderly, Muslim, Christian, brothers and sisters.

Blogger gets four years in Egyptian prison.
Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman, Egyptian blogger, was sentenced to three years in prison this week for "inciting hatred of Islam" and an additional year for "insulting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak" on his blog, where he wrote under the pseudonym of "Kareem Amer". Suleiman's blogs regularly criticised the government's religious and authoritarian excesses. He also criticised Egypt's highest religious institutions including the Sunni university of Al-Azhar, where he studied law. His father has reportedly taken the step to disowning Abdel Kareem, stating that he would like to see Sharia Law applied to his son, in which he would have three days to repent at the end of which if he is not repentant, he would be killed. Dreadful things happen when medieval beliefs meet the modern world.
