Looking through my bookshelf I ran into this old favorite - Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 1) by Juliet Marillier. Her website refers to her fantasy style as historical fantasy, and that is certainly true - but history as the dry subject I remember is a far cry from this book. Celtic mythology, and yes, historical events, make their way in, but this is such a magical book it's hard to classify. While driving across Washington State recently I came across a sign that read "Ginkgo Petrified Forest - Next Exit". Seeing as I was in the most barren, dry and otherwise rather unbecoming area of the state you can imagine how the sign caught my eye. I had a bit of time to kill so I decided to take the exit and check out this "Petrified Forest" at Vantage Washington. I was interested not only in the "petrified" part but also in the "Ginkgo" part. I have profiled the Ginkgo tree and I was rather curious to see a petrified forest of them. (Ginkgos are a very rare species of tree that are only found growing wild in a small area of China. )About three miles of the freeway I came across the "interpretive trail". A forest fire has been burning for three days, in the Saint Mary’s Wilderness. In a 24 hour period, the fire grew four times its size. As of Wednesday afternoon, it was estimated that 1000 acres of forest had burned. Thursday evening, a possible 1300-1400 acres had been affected by the flames. Weather is a large, contributing factor in the containment of the fire. If windy conditions occur, the fire can spread before it can be contained. It is about 15% contained at this time. It is believed that it will take several days to get the blaze under control. There were about 8 residencies of concern when the fire started. This smoothie is based on the classic gateau from the 80's. Traditionally flavoured with lots of cream, chocolate and forest fruits - black cherries, blackberries, and blackcurrants are the main ingredients. It originates from the Black Forest in Germany, hence the name schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (black forest cherry cake).
