      Carbon Footprint and Energy Efficiency
The goal of our blogs is to help diffuse any confusion about sustainable design and building your new green home, whether it is post and beam, timber frame, structural insulated panels, or a conventionally-built energy efficient home and also how we can all be a little greener in our existing homes. You may be building a new green home and want more information on green options available to you (based on your site location, budget, and availability of materials). We also discuss energy systems, how they affect our daily lives, and what decisions you’ll have to make in building a new green home - and also let you know if we find any tax incentives (see our blog on Solar Energy Systems).Everyone’s going green (even the Oscars, The Superbowl, and the National Football League!) and talking

American poor and homeless high carbon footprint
For some people - mainly the better off - the need to take action against global warming holds an almost religious status (honor Al Gore, do not covet your neighbor's gas-guzzling SUV, etc). But does being good do any good? Not much, says a team of students at MIT. You can swap the Hummer for a hybrid and diet on lentil curry instead of lamb chops, but it will a have only a limited effect on your carbon footprint (read a PDF of their study). The students interviewed people from a range of different income brackets. They then calculated how much energy is needed to sustain every aspect of their subjects' lives, from the food they eat to health services they receive....and found there is a threshold energy use that almost no one in the US can avoid, and in global terms it's high

How to Erase your Carbon Footprint
By Kelly Magill, publisher, Positively Green Once you’ve been on the green train for a while, you’ve got the basics; recycling, sustainable energy, canvas bags, fuel efficient vehicles, and all the little energy and water saving ideas that you can apply daily. Unfortunately, even with all of these eco-friendly practices, you still leave a carbon “footprint”. Admittedly, it is significantly smaller than if you didn’t make green choices, but you’re still creating carbon dioxide, which is intensifying the climate problem. How can you “erase” the remainder of your carbon footprint? Purchasing carbon offsets is one possible solution. When you purchase carbon offsets, you’re essentially donating money to a group that will fund projects that actively decrease the amount of

Eight ways to shrink your carbon footprint - 2009 Toyota Corolla vs. Ford Focus, VW Rabbit, Subaru Impreza, and Four More Economy Cars
Come the year 2020, new cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. must average 35 mpg. It’s the law. But why wait? We’ve rounded up eight new models that deliver a 35-mpg average right now, more or less, according to federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) calculations. Reality check: Although the Congress has mandated 35 mpg, our tests show that 35-mpg cars get 25 to 27 mpg in the real world. Close enough for government work? Well, yes, but there is a solid logic at work here. CAFE is a regulatory process first and foremost, and CAFE mpg comes from laboratory tests designed to reliably measure mileage for regulatory purposes. Any resemblance of your mileage to CAFE is purely coincidental. But there is a payoff. The government tests are extremely reliable in producing the CAFE milea

CARBON: Recreational fishing tournaments make efforts to reduce their carbon footprint
People will behave altruistically towards the environment if given the tools to do so. Education, infrastructure and resources are key elements in fighting environmental degradation. Additionally, environmental buzzwords or ideas like “carbon footprint” and “carbon neutrality” serve as tools that help bring abstract or intangible ideas like environmental degradation and global warming into perspective. Recently these buzzwords were voluntarily put into action in a few fishing tournaments across Florida. Some recreational fishing tournaments have taken steps to reduce their impact on the environment by practicing catch and release, raising money for charities, carpooling to tournaments and fishing with kayak. Kayaks go where motorboats cannot and there is no rumbling or smoky out

As part of their Six Degrees film project, Jamais Cascio, the filmmaker, broke down the carbon emissions of this unique and definitively American cuisine, which is now eaten world-wide in virtually every country. What’s a Carbon Footprint? A carbon footprint means all the energy that was consumed every step of the way for each of the cheeseburger’s parts. Each of us has a carbon footprint, based on what we do, how we do it, and how long it takes us to get it done. When you look at the variety of processes in the making of a ch

Hummers Have A Smaller Eco-Footprint Than Hybrids?
A few years ago a report titled the 'Dust to Dust' report claimed that the total environmental footprint of a Hummer SUV was less than that of a Toyota Prius. If you want to read the entire 458 page report you can download the PDF here, but the synopsis of the report basically puts forth that once you take into the account the full costs associated with research, development, mining, operation and maintenance and finally the recycling of the hybrid car the total amount of energy consumed is greater than that of a Hummer over each vehicle's usable lifetime.Needless to say, the report was widely quoted in the media. However, a rebuttal has since been published by Dr. Peter Gleick of the Pacific Institute which points out some questionable methods. Two of the highlights in the Dust to Du

But I am always captivated by adverts from reputable environmental brands such as Discovery Channel and WWF. The production quality of their adverts is incredible and really makes us appreciate the world we live in, even if it is only for those few moments during the ad and briefly after. The way they are able to capture our attention, even with the simplicity of this advert, is remarkable. And at the end of it all I do feel a slight bit of guilt for not appreciating our world as much as I should. Damn you Discovery...yet another thing on my mind! Comment on "Discovery C

T-rex was one of the last dinosaurs to exist before the entire species was wiped out in a mass extinction. It was a flesh-eating giant, standing 20ft tall, 40ft long and weighing in at about seven tons. Only about 50 partial skeletons have been recovered since fossil hunters started looking for what was one of the largest carnivores to live on earth. All of the remains have been found in the Hell Creek area of America. ‘Footprint’ calculations ignore capital activities, which could lead to bad investment decisions
We tend to focus on emissions associated with running machines and ignore those associated with building them. The EU energy label for white goods, for example, tells you how much electricity the product consumes but nothing about its manufacture. Emerging methodologies for calculating ‘footprints’ have similar problems. Defra’s calculator for personal emissions – which was designed to set a standard for such calculators – only considers the fuel used during your journeys by aeroplane, car or public transport (not the emissions generating during manufacture and disposal of the vehicles) and the electricity and gas used by your home appliances (not the energy involved in making them). The WRI’s GHG Protocol, a de facto international standard for reporting corporate emissions, follows similar principles in only recommending that companies consider the greenhouse gases generated by their operating activities. The significance of this is greater than getting the size of footpri

Carbon footprint and the zero sum game
So, what’s your carbon footprint? How much are you contributing to greenhouse gas emissions? Would you trade with others to stay carbon-neutral? Would buy-offs ease your guilt? It’s early times, but there is a new trend to becoming a zero-sum contributor of greenhouse gases (”carbon neutral”). That means when you exceed your personal target you purchase carbon off-sets, you invest in any project that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, thus the zero sum. This editorial in the Christian Science Monitor entitled Guilt relief in global warming is a useful start in understanding the concept. Interestingly, the Christian of the Science Monitor takes on ‘guilt’ as a principal motivator and likens it to earlier times: Using offsets has been criticized as an easy way to relieve “carbon guilt” without making changes in one’s daily use of fossil fuels that would reduce emissions directly. Offsets are likened to indulgences the Roman Catholic c

Does tap water have a carbon footprint?
You would have thought not, but according to research, there are 19 billion liters of tap water used everyday in the UK alone, so you can just imagine what the world figure is. Its not the actual water, but the processing that causes the problems. In the UK the processing and distribution of tap water uses around two to three per cent of all of the electricity in the UK and at the same time creates around half a per cent of all UK carbon emissions. So you see, tap water is not as green (or clear!) as we may of thought. Source [Tree Hugger] All Natural, climate change, conservation, Eco Friendly, liters, tap water, UK and Europe

      John Travolta's Big-foot Carbon footprint
I was watching Jay Leno the other day and John Travolta was on talking about his sleeping habits. He stated that he goes to bed at 5 am and sleeps through until 12pm in the morning. So not content with owning a 747 which he flies around for fun, he stays up presumably with all lights blazing. The most inefficent lifestyle energy wise I can imagine. Why? Because he can I guess. Leaving the rest of us plebs to choke on his fumes. In this era of global warming we all need to stand up and take responsiblity for our energy usage and realise that it is having a detrimental effect on the planet. But with guys like Travolta, living lives like Roman emperor's, we have our work cut out telling the Chinese to stop building coal fired powerstations, because John Travola has presumably got one in his back garden for his Barbecues. On another note, I was curious to see what Jay Leno's wife looked like. So I googled and found this radiant picture of the woman herself. Isn't she a doll?

My Secret Goal is to have a 4.5 Acre Footprint
I’m not special. I happen to be just one of the six billion people that live on this planet.  Whether your religious or not, the way I see it, we are all part of the human family, one great big, interconnected, multi-generational, inter-cultural, spread out, and fairly dysfunctional family. But, I’m not special, I’m just one more member of the family. It’s only fair that I share equally with the rest of the family, this great big planet that we live on. Above is a picture of my ecological footprint. It’s an improvement from how I was living last year, but still double what I’d like it to be. I know it’s not right to make laws about things like this, but I don’t see why we as people aren’t a little more shameful of the way that we live? I mean if I took the 4.5 acres that were for my brother and hogged his plus mine, and a little of my sisters land all to myself, just so I could eat as I please and travel as I wanted to. People wo

Reduce the Size of Your WordPress Plugin Footprint
For each WordPress plugin you install, you are adding to the bandwidth overhead of your site. Some plugins are relatively small in size, but some can weigh in at about 50-100 kilobytes a piece. Add in enough of those, and your website will slow considerably. As a plugin author, there are some simple steps to take to reduce the footprint of your plugin, even if your plugin still requires a lot of code. Break Out Admin Panels Into Separate Files Even for simple plugins, adding admin panels can easily balloon a plugin’s file size. A simple, yet effective technique, is to copy the code used for the admin panel to a separate file and simply provide an include in the function that loads the admin panel. For example, say you load in your admin panel using this code: add_options_page('Plugin Name', 'Plugin Name', 10, basename(__FILE__), 'printAdminPage'); The function printAdminPage is going to be the function that loads the admin panel. Within this function you could ha

      Earth Day Footprint Calculator
I had long lost track of this site, but found it once again! From EarthDay is a carbon footprint calculator. They call it the "Earth Day Footprint Quiz". You answer a bunch of questions and it tells you, based on how you live your life, how many planets we would need to support everyone to live like you do. I remember taking this quiz a long time ago, and its a shame I didn't keep the results

      What's your Carbon Footprint?
Each of us have a carbon footprint that we implant on the world. The amount of Carbon footprint each individual amass depends on how much you consume. How much you consume in electricity, gas, and so forth. All this can be calculated by a Carbon Footprint Calculator. So what exactly is Carbon Footprint? According to the Carbon Footprint Website:Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.Almost anything we do in this post-modern society seems to expend a lot of energy and also harm the environment. However there are steps you can take to offset your Carbon Footprint and also reduce it down to Zero. Here are some simple things you can do to help the environment.Plant trees: For an average family; to balance your Carbon Footprint to Zero; you would have to plant about 30 trees. Now you don't have to plant 30. You can start with

      Tracking Toronto’s Ecological Footprint
Today, Toronto’s mayor announced The Zerofootprint Toronto project, during the C40 Summit in New York. The Zerofootprint tool lets users chart their environmental impact through activities like transportation, their eating habits, their recreational and work activities and habits and their waste habits. The tool lets you compare your scores to your friends and neighbors to see how you measure up. “Climate change is the issue of our time and it’s up to all of us to do our part to minimize the impact of day-to-day activities,” Toronto Mayor David Miller explained at the conference. “Zerofootprint Toronto is going to help make my city not only one of the greenest on the planet, but one of the most innovative, as well.” All Torontoians will be encouraged to set up an online profile and the information collected will be used to help Toronto and other cities develop and modify environmental plans, programs and policies. Offsetting Your Carbon Footprint
Eureka! Offset your emissions. The other day I received an email from Rod “CEO” Cuthbert about an article he came across in the UK’s Guardian Unlimited. When I went to the website I found that the second article on the page (between Iran’s suspension of a sailor’s release plans and the new MC Rove) was about the UK’s carbon emissions. The article talked about the rise in carbon emissions in the UK and that the 1.25% increase was “worrying and that the figures underlined the importance of efforts to tackle climate change both from government and wider society”. Rod’s point was simple: Carbon emissions are headline news. This is typical now, it’s a topic that’s rarely off the front pages of the major dailies. Climate change, or global warming, is the changing of our global climate due to the build up of carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. Is it happening? Yes. For example: 2005 was the hott

Corner fridge offers loads of space with small footprint.
We wish we had known of this fridge when we did the kitchen. That had saved us a lot of space problems. This corner fridge from Norcool (in English) will accommodate no less than 1,200 liters (about as much as 3 or 4 ordinary refrigerators) and only takes a little more floor space (Compare the outline of the corner fridge (black solid line) and an ordinary 60x60 cm fridge (red solid line). Placing the fridge in a corner gives lots of extra space and, as a bonus, plenty of room for the required ventilation. The only draw-back is that there is no version with a fridge/freezer combo. That would have been the optimal solution. Who's going to be the first with a combo like that?

The Carbon Footprint of a Burger
Via Treehugger but originating (and containing a complete breakdown) at Jamais Cascio's new site: Open the Future. Jamais was the former managing editor over at Worldchanging, one of my favorite eco-chic ass-kicking sites...anyway, he... "recently got to wondering: with all the recent hubbub surrounding carbon footprints, credits and offsets, what do everyday, common items contribute to our warming globe? He started with an American institution: the cheeseburger, and, after a little digging and number-crunching he came up with 6.3 to 6.8 pounds (2.85 to 3.1 kg) of carbon emissions per burger. This includes a myriad of factors, from growing the feed for the cattle for the beef and cheese, growing the produce, storing and transporting the components, as well as cooking them all, and he appears to have done a fairly thorough job. So, why choose burgers? The average American eats three burgers per week, or about 150 burgers per year; that's a lot of beef, cheese, shipping and grilling, a
