ballad of a foodieThis is my foodie collection on flickr. Mouse over to see Set title. Click on any of the links to View that Set on flickr. I took these shots over a span of 2 years. There is allot of emotional attachment to them. It is about food. It isn't about people who were captured - their poses frozen in time. No, it is about the way I captured these images. I was a newly amateur photographer who was obsessed at getting enough pictures to fill my memory card at the end of the night. I have heard people say "you can't take decent pictures with a digital point and shoot, or anything under 8mp", that opinion is ridiculous. When I first started taking pictures, I had this little point and shoot digital camera, it had only 3 mp. I'm amazed that over 3000 people shelled out that kind of change for the four-day event. I guess that there are a lot of wealthy foodies out there.

      Invitations from a Foodie Wedding
Photo by Eddie SongWe recently sent out invitations for our upcoming wedding. Like others before us, we included a phrase that we thought best represented our feelings. The original quote was from Harriet Van Horne; however, we flipped around the first line to fit our needs. Our saying was:Love is like cooking. It should beentered into with abandon or not at all.Jessica and I love each other and we love cooking -- we see many parallels between the two affinities. In both, the basis for starting is instinctual and the result is a special treat. Like food preferences, everyone has their special taste in a significant other. To achieve a great result in either it takes a little luck and a lot of understanding. And as anyone who has been in a relationship or in the kitchen knows, there can

      A Foodie in Stockholm
Around these parts, when work gets busy, blogging gets slow. Unfortunately, it's been quite busy at work lately. However, now that a long weekend is here (a three day weekend of my own creation as Presidents' Day isn't a work holiday for me), I thought that I would take the opportunity to catch up on my backlog of posts. As you may recall, I paid a visit to Sweden late last year. For the most part, the trip was packed with work, but I was able to break free one day to do some sightseeing around Stockholm. Despite the less than perfect weather, my colleague Dan and I roamed around the city center, taking in a number of historic sites in the Gamla Stan (Old Town), including the Royal Palace, the 700-year-old Riddarholmen Church (which, unfortunately, was closed), and the famous statue of

Happy Edible Holidays - Good Gifts for your Foodie
Lon does not like presents that are not edible. I made the mistake of buying him a sweater once. The Brooks Bothers sweater is still sitting in our bedroom with tags on it. I noticed that his family really just buys him food, for every holiday and birthday. So, what's a good present for a foodie?1. Vinegars - They come in an amazing array of awesome flavors like fig or pomegranate balsamic, strawberry champagne, ginger rice, etc. They are available in all price ranges too, starting from around $3 to around $45 for a good bottle of aged balsamic.2. Olive Oil - Olive oil also varies greatly in price. For a present, you want to get an Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Some come in gorgeous bottles too.3. Gourmet Sea Salts - I don't use iodized salt(table salt) for cooking generally and a good salt makes a big difference. One of my favorite presents is when Lon's sister brought us some Red Alaea Sea Salt from Hawaii.4. Distinctive Meats - Lon's mom once bought him ostrich meat and I love buffal

Her report so far:Breastmilk: Tasty, although quickly becoming passéOatmeal: Yum! Mixed with some of that milk is best.Sweet potatoes: Yum! And the orange stains left behind when I spit up give mommy a headache.Carrots: Yum! Tastes great, and is another great orange color for staining my clothes.Apples: Yum! Great to eat cold when teething pain strikes. More, please!Squash: Yum! Like sweet potatoes, only not quite as orange. Not as much stain power as the other veggies, but still delicious.Bananas: Yum! What's next?See? If she was a critic, everyone would want her at their restaurants, and every dish would get a glowing review. And she's not content with the selection provided so far. In the past 6 months, I have discovered the wealth of food-related podcasts available on iTunes, and they have revolutionized my life. In addition to reading recipe books and food magazines and watching nothing but cooking shows on TV (except for “The Office,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Friday Night Lights”) I can now listen to podcasts about cooking, food and restaurants to complete The Circle of Obsession. After starting with a relatively large selection, I have narrowed it down to the following podcasts which I love, all of which are available FOR FREE on iTunes. Foodie blogroll

Top Chef 3: RVA Foodie's Recap of Last Night's Episode
Dear Readers: RVA Foodie is the coworker with whom I discuss all things foodie! He has graciously agreed to write a guest blog about last night's Restaurant Part II Epidsode. Here goes.Bad News Bears rise to the challenge while the all-star team suffered from over-confidence. Could this be a theme for this season? Personally, I have to wonder about matching relatively raw salmon with pesto. I mean, I could eat pounds of those things separately, but together in my mouth... no. Like those two ingredients, the talented members of the Restaurant April just didn't compliment each other, and their leader underwhelmed while serving up two flops. Sorry Tre. Playing it smart and conservative can sometimes leave you in the dust if imagination is what is called for. A little more creativity and I saw you in the finals. Now, how about that cameo.Part of me really wanted to eavesdrop on Stephen's didactic and verbose tableside seminars, but he's not part of the competition this time around, so

      The Real Food Foodie
I have swung between both extremes in the diet world. There was a time when I ate deep fried tacos from Jack in the Box (3 for 99¢) several times a week, and another time when I didn’t go out without a bag of nuts and dried fruit in my pocket to sustain my vegan diet (between periods of fasting of course). The one thing I’ve noticed in my travels between the worlds of fast food and whole food is that both ends love their substitutes. Country Crock and Velveeta (no that’s not cheese) on one hand, and soy burgers and facon on the other. At one time I was dining with some vegetarian friends and ended up at a restaurant that served mock meats - tofu or seitan shaped into things like shredded pork, shrimp, ribs and meat balls. I remember asking the question why would a vegetarian want meat shaped veggie foods, but no one answered. What made me run away from bad food (things like margarine, msg, Miracle Whip, and Velveeta) was the desire for the real thing. The desir

Because I have a small window of time where I’m waiting for someone else to finish their work before I can do more of mine, I thought I would share two things with you.  One of them is WAY more exciting than the other, but my life is not ALL glamour, you know. The first thing is that I learned from Zoot that today is Stop Cyberbullying Day.  I have mixed feelings about this.  As someone who was entrenched in a horrible and childish online “feud” (and GOD, was it stupid), I’m a fan of stopping it.  At the same time, I think people cannot be left to their own devices to stop it, and more tools should be made available to ease cyberbullying.  “Spam” filters are great about blocking obscene or unwelcome commenters, and I love the IP Block feature afforded by my server host.  But the truth of it is.. it becomes an addiction.  It takes an immense amount of support and self-restraint to stop. (Or, in some cases, a great bout of Lent.) So I guess th
