      Tip: Stop Focusing on Visionaries
There is a horrid fact in the world of innovation: The vast majority of new products fail, and most new ad campaigns don’t achieve their objectives. The brilliant minds that fuel breakthroughs are also at a disadvantage when it comes to getting ideas adopted by the masses.

WISDOM OF THE WORLD WEEK - 15 FOCUSING POWER
In ancient China, a teacher, K’ung Fu-tse, and his followers were on their way to the state of Ch’u. As they emerged from a forest, they came upon a hunchback catching cicadas (winged insects) on the end of a stick as they flew by. “How skilful!” exclaimed the master, stopping to watch. “ Sir, what is your method?”“At first,” the man answered, “I practised balancing pellets on this stick. After five or six months, I could handle two until they never fell down. Then I failed with only a few of the insects. I went on to three pellets. After that, I only missed one cicada in ten. By the time I could manipulate five pellets, I was catching cicadas without effort.“When I focus my attention, my body becomes no more than a stump, and my arm the branch of a tree. Heaven and ear

      Focusing On the Wii
The fifth video game manufactured by Nintendo is set to become the biggest selling video game system ever. The Wii stands out from the rest of the video game systems with its wireless remote that enables players to move freely. No doubt the Wii is the most modern video game system in the market today. As a footnote, the Wii was actually not named after the company that manufactured it. It is simply named Wii, with a codename of Revolution and E3 before it was formally launched. Wii was chosen as the nick because it sounds like "we", thus emphasizing that the system is for multiple gamers. In effect the system promotes the interaction between the Wii and the players. However, the name has become the topic of jokes among many users because it also refers to the American slang referring to urin

Cyber Criminals Focusing Home Computer Users
When it comes to cyber crimes, a new research has found that hi-tech criminals are now turning away from targeting big firms, and are focussing their attention on home computer users.Security firm Symantec found that cyber criminals are increasingly targeting home PC owners as a lack of security systems mean that they are the easiest prey in the market.Symantec found that there had been an 81 percent rise in bogus email messages that are attempting to con unsuspecting owners into revealing personal as well as banking details. In its bi-annual Internet Threat Report, Symantec revealed that more than 157,000 unique "phishing' messages were sent to home PCs during the first six months of 2006.Ollie Whitehouse, Symantec research scientist and one of the authors of the report, said that the trend showed that home users had become targets as they were the weakest link."Organised crime is here and they are very interested in phishing. Focusing on the Unfocused Photos
Brian Auer [CC by-nc-nd] A sharp focus with crisp detail is generally one of the most sought after features in a photo. How many times have you thrown out a photo because your auto-focus was off a little? How many of us fret over shutter speeds, “sweet spots“, image stabilization, tripods and tripod heads, and image sharpening techniques in Photoshop? I’m not arguing that sharp photos are are worth the extra effort — but I think unsharp photos are worth more effort than we typically give them. And by “unsharp photos” I don’t mean those accidental blurry shots resulting from your AF picking up on the wrong subject. Intentionally unfocused photos can be quite amazing for certain scenes and subjects. I spent a bit of time on my last photo shoot working on de-focused, mis-focused, and soft-focused imagery. One of my key learnings is that it’s much harder to pull off than you would think. But before I get to the tips, here are some obs

I'm talking about a website you maybe only visited once, but remember something about it because of it's unique design. Now, try to remember a website that you learned a lot from. It can be any website, as long as you left the website with new knowledge or a new understanding for something.Which website do you remember the purpose of? Which website do you remember the most about?Remembering is fine and dandy, but what has it got to do with your websites? Let me ask you: is there anything better than a great looking website? Believe it or not: there is.An effective website, one that has a purpose and provides valuable content, will always be better than a great looking website. That's why web designers and webmasters need to stop focusing on the look of their website, and start focusing on the purpose.Sure, a we

Herbal medicinals: selected clinical considerations focusing on known or potential drug-herb interactions.
Herbal medicinals are being used by an increasing number of patients who typically do not advise their clinicians of concomitant use. Known or potential drug-herb interactions exist and should be screened for. If used beyond 8 weeks, Echinacea could cause hepatotoxicity and therefore should not be used with other known hepatoxic drugs, such as anabolic steroids, amiodarone, methotrexate, and ketoconazole. However, Echinacea lacks the 1,2 saturated necrine ring associated with hepatoxicity of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may negate the usefulness of feverfew in the treatment of migraine headaches. Feverfew, garlic, Ginkgo, ginger, and ginseng may alter bleeding time and should not be used concomitantly with warfarin sodium. Additionally, ginseng may cause hea

There is a quote that hangs in a coworker’s cubicle of mine: “Happiness does not depend on what happens outside of you but on what happens inside of you.” One person can be stuck in a traffic jam and think to themselves, “I can finally listen to this CD that I never have time to” and they are enjoying the situation the best they can. Meanwhile the person in the back of the car can only think of how horrible a situation they are in and curse and moan about how life stinks and now your going to be late and what kinda moron would get in an accident here and cause all this traffic etc. etc. They are fully upset and angry. focusing on important topics and subjects
So last night I really worked on streamlining/simplifying the information overload that existed in the form of my incredibly disorganized 400GB external storage drive. This went well, although it caused me to stay up much later than I had intended. I noticed that while I sorted through all this information, it helped me to really focus on which topics/subjects I either care most about and/or are most interested in reading up on.So, that task mostly finished (I had been putting it off a long time), I only say "mostly" because I'm still editing my "music playlist" folder by deleting those songs from CD rips that I can't stand. You know, the ones you always skip over when listening straight through?Anyway, the connection all of this has to unschooling is that I realized I have such a large wealth of digital information to pass along to my son, when he comes of age. There are research materials on so many topics, some of which include astronomy/the universe, other science, philosophy, psyc

Did Chris Claremont chicken out when focusing on a racial issue?
I once found this panel from Uncanny X-Men #196, August 1985, while looking across the web for various pictures, where Kitty Pryde is shown facing off against an apparent black racist. The issue was written by Chris Claremont and drawn by John Romita Jr. and Dan Green (no relation). Not sure who the other mutant is whom this Phil is referencing, but here's my big, controversial question: did Claremont come up short when he had the man ask Kitty Pryde if she's a "mutie", rather than to ask an even more menacing question by asking if she's Jewish (she is)...by using the K-bomb?Well, if you ask me, I think Claremont was wimping out on a racial issue that could have some serious clout by just making one side an actual background and the other simply an allegory. The same argument could be made if you had Zatanna, who's Italian (see DC's Blue Ribbon Digest #2 from 1980, where Gerry Conway established this), in a similar story where a racist challenges her by asking if she's homo-magi

Focusing on the irrelevant at the expense of the essential
In A dangerous detour John McWhorter presents an excellent commentary on the current Imus tizzy. He correctly points out that some African Americans focus on what can’t be solved at the expense of working towards remedying “big, chronic problems” that can be solved. True, Imus’ comments were out of line. But I’m far less concerned about what a radio shock jock says than I am about the truly serious issues that face so many American communities of any color or creed.
