Fragrant rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) is a perennial, evergreen shrub. Not only are they wonderful cooking herbs, they are also dependable plants to use in any drought tolerant garden. The role of most landscape shrubs and bushes is to serve as a screen or backdrop. Some species while primarily acting as such, also add color to the garden with their flowers, foliage or decorative fruit, although this should not be at the expense of their landscaping role. A clear distinction should be made between them and shrubs such as roses that are specifically grown for their flower color.
Indoor or Outdoor Decorative Flowering Bonsai TreesSome bonsai trees – like any other tree – flower and produce fruit. A regular apple tree for example produces a lovely apple blossom and later yields a crop of apples. The huge difference however is the size of the tree! A well cared for bonsai tree is an extremely attractive and decorative tree whether it’s kept indoors or outdoors in a hig
Italians seriously win at flowering balconies and window boxes...I came across this great group on Flickr - and there are some really inspirational pictures...I'm off to Rome in October - and can't wait to discover new ideas to shareIt really does go to prove that it's as much about the window as the planting!!!
It's time to think of the autumn phase of the garden already. When we picture autumn we picture the trees ablaze with color, at least here in the Midwest, and in the Northeast of the USA. But there are other players on the stage, perhaps with a supporting role, but many of them bring lots of color and add to the tapestry of of the season.I tried growing my own flowering kale this year. I bought li
What appears to be the fruit of the cashew tree is an oval or pear-shaped accessory fruit or false fruit that develops from the receptacle of the cashew flower. Called the cashew apple. A flowering tree is best planted for spring blooming in the fall when dormant, however, container flowering trees can be planted any season, but preferably fall and winter is best. Gardeners can buy many colors of flowering trees: red, white, yellow, peach, pink, plum, lavender, blue, and apricot. You can buy a flowering tree that [...]
You might notice that I cook my vegetables by blanching them. They usually turn out looking nicer then stir fried. I never really like to stir frying leafy vegetables. Maybe I don't have the skills. ;pThey are always either over or under cooked. Sometimes, part of the veggie is cooked but another part under cooked. Plus, I hate how the dish of veggies always looked so 'messy'. :PAfter a few tim

Seeing as this week is the week of the Chelsea Flower Show I thought I’d write about flowers.
Some bonsai are enhanced by flowers such as the azalea or serissa. They do however sometimes need a bit of special care and feeding so that they remain healthy during and after flowering.
The main part to remember [...]
Yes, it’s April. Which, in these here parts, means Skagit County Tulip Festival. It goes through the whole month of April.
Since the weekend forecast calls for rain and snow *sigh*, I thought I’d share some snaps from earlier this week.
There were the usual brilliant colors.
Nicely laid, row after row.

The flowers on our Crab Apple Tree (at least I think that's what kind of tree it is) finally opened up this week. It seemed like every other tree in the neighborhood was in bloom, except for ours.

Azaleas Sping Time flowering shrubs in Central Park, New York City, New York. April 12,2007.Most gardeners in the Mid Atlantic region take azaleas for granted. They are a fixture in almost every garden and are without doubt the most colorful of all spring blooming shrubs. It's hard to imagine that just half a century ago many of these azaleas were not available to gardeners.Former U.S. National Arboretum Director Benjamin Y. Morrison knew of the large flowered Indica hybrids that graced gardens in the Gulf Coast states and envisioned the modern hybrid azalea as we know it today. He successfully combined the large flowers and exciting colors of tender azaleas in the Indica group with the hardiness of more northerly species. Morrison did the hybridization work at the Plant Introduction S
Forsythia From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaForsythia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Oleaceae (olive family). There are about 11 species, mostly native to eastern Asia, but one native to southeastern Europe. The common name is also Forsythia; the genus is named after William Forsyth. They are deciduous shrubs typically growing to a height of 1–3 m (3–9 ft.) and, rarely, up to 6 m (18 ft.), with rough grey-brown bark. The leaves are opposite, usually simple but sometimes trifoliate with a basal pair of small leaflets, and range from 2–10 cm (1–4 in.) in length and, rarely, up to 15 cm (6 in.) long; the margin is serrated or entire. The flowers are produced in the early spring before the leaves, bright yellow with a deeply four-lobed corolla, the petals joined only at
This afternoon I went to visit Tony at Landscaping and he showed me this banana flower. Neither one of us had ever seen a flower this large (the petals are oval about 9" long and 5" wide) and certainly had not seen blooms at the ends of young bananas themselves. It's fascinating to me the different ways plants flower and bloom at different times of year here, even without drastic climate changes.Tags: Photographs, Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos, Providenciales, Living In Caribbean, banana tree, banana flower, lynda lippin
Aerogarden, the name must not be unfamiliar to many of you who may have seen these cute-looking miniature garden units that boast of growing plenty of varieties or herbs and plants without much maintenance! For those of you who may not have heard of these, Aerogardens literally bring your garden into your office, kitchen or any other space you want to make green. Last year, they had introduced their first edition mainly for herbs and greens, but at a price label of $150, it was still out of reach for the general mass. But due to growing popularity and demand, they have launched a revamped version which grows not only herbs, but other decorative flowering plants as well, and has the added benefit of a price cut!!So what is an AeroGarden? Well, its basically a NASA-tested aeroponic technolog
Here’s another of the magnificent blooming trees and bushes you’ll find around Dothan this time of year. It is hard to argue that springtime is the most beautiful time of the year.

The addition of flowering house plants can make colorful compliment to the indoor landscape. Some of these flowering beauties will require you to live in a warmer climate where they can grow outdoors as a part of the outdoor landscape, but not all. Color Rules for Flowering Plants Before you select any plant for use indoors - this goes for flowering and foliage plants you need to take some time to look at where the plant will be growing. Ask the question of the light requirements. Is there enough light for the plant? Make the plant fit the location, not the location fit the plant! As a novice knowing which plant fits what location can be a task on it's own. Here are a few tips to get started. Visit your local garden center and look for a sales associate who knows something about plants and

I couldn't help myself. I was at the former "Wild Oats", now "Whole Foods" store yesterday and there were the last of their flowering kale offerings on sale for 99 ¢ each. You know me by now... if you read here often. I am a frugal gardener, but also an addicted one. I could not pass up that tempting combination of good price-good plant that I had been wanting. So I bought two and stayed out after dark last night planting them up tout suite. I had the perfect idea for them, and since I was out there gathering leaves in the wheelbarrow ( which several of the kids were asked to do, but somehow ??? didn't get done!), I dug out the dead annuals from the urn planters, put in the kales, one in each pot, and grabbed the pruners to prune off some red pine flourishes. Voila- a couple Christmas porch planters for the recently turned cold weather. A bit "shabby chic" and elegantly decayed with the remnants of the variegated ivy.I had meant to buy some kale plants earlier, they are the annu
These are pretty, woody plants which can be trained when young. They have maplelike leaves from whose leaf-joints come the bell-shaped flowers. The flowers of the hybrids are red, pink, yellow or white. Abutilon hybridum 'Canary Bird' are long-lasting, making them suitable for use as feature plants, especially in front of a window.

Flowering plum includes a variety of plum trees that are both native and introduced, and can be found growing on the low slopes and in valleys across the United States and southern Canada. They can even be seen by the sides of roads and along fences — especially in those parts of North America with moist soil that is made of clay, loam, and sand. (more…)

I have taken some pictures of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering and the final product as a tasteful berry (as you can see in the photo above).
The cloudberry plant (Rubus chamaemorus), or bakeapple as it is called some places, is slow growing sub-arctic specie that is a very important berry here in northern Norway. Cloudberries are mainly used as jam, with whipped cream, in cakes and some even make alcoholic drinks out of the berries.
When the berries are ripe there is a lot of competition among people to get a good harvest. There have even been reports of fighting Thus the price on cloudberries can be as high as 18-20$/kg.
The following pictures are of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering.

Woodbine, MD (PRWEB) -- As a lifelong Horticultural professional, Vicki Smith at Lawn and Garden Search (www.LGYP.com) has news about what is flowering during early June across the eastern U.S. and guidance for growing these beautiful plants in the home garden. Since outdoor living and container gardening are areas of increasing consumer interest, these colorful trees, ornamental shrubs and evergreens will bring excitement to the landscape, patio and deck, or in raised planters.
Across much of the southeast three summer flowering trees are coming into color: Crape Myrtles (Lagerstroemia hybrids) are beginning to flower, adding much needed color all through summer; Southern Magnolias (M. grandiflora) will be continuing through June and sporadically throughout the summer and the less well-known but sturdy and drought tolerant Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) has violet-blue flowers through July. Perennial Daylilies (Hemerocallis hybrids) are as robust as ever. The last must-have additi
