For the last week (or has it been longer? Frankly, I don't remember) the city of Slope Oak, Iowa, has been besieged by the Mighty Mississippi River which, as she does just about once each year, overflowed her banks and gave our blighted community its annual bath. So, what am I complaining about? This, that's what. There is folks out there who will use this annual tragedy -- like t

QUINCY, Ill. - Hundreds of volunteers on the surging Mississippi River piled sandbags atop strained levees on Tuesday as the worst Midwest flooding in 15 years delivered a blow to the US economy and world food prices. This last week was a difficult one for many people in Iowa. For the second time in 15 years, the state has suffered floods that are only supposed to happen every 500 years, leaving many people with damaged homes, destroyed crops, and the loss of things important to them. My parents's home did not sustain water damage, but my family has been affected by the floods. One day last week my aunt spent t

Health care interests spent $445 million on federal lobbying in 2007, more than any other sector of the economy. This is the second year in a row that they were the top spenders.
In a more specific breakdown, pharmaceutical and medical products companies rank first with $227 million in spending, while health insurance companies spent the second-most at $138 million. Hospitals and nursing homes spent $91 million, ranking fifth, and health professionals spent $70 million, ranking 15th. HMOs and health services spent $52 million, ranking 19th.
The pharmaceutical industry has spent $1.3 billion on federal lobbying in the last decade, again more than any other industry. And the drug industry's reported lobbying increased by 25 percent from 2006 to 2007.

Spring is finally upon us, and I'm so grateful, because this winter has been particularly difficult. I'm so happy that the snowdrifts outside are steadily shrinking - but all that moisture has to go somewhere, doesn't it? I remember where it all went in the spring of 1993...It went everywhere it wasn't suppose to be. And my old neighborhood was one of the communities hit hard by those spring floods. It was horrible! Everyone had anywhere from 1-3 feet of water in their first floor. Luckily for hubby and I, our house was set up on a bit of a hill - a hill that let our first floor barely escape damage. The water came quickly up our alley, then surrounded our house, eventually filling our basement. It literally was one inch from coming over the basement steps into our first floor. It was v

I wanted to post this yesterday, but our cable/internet was down for over a day. After yesterday's charter the weather started looking bad. I called my evening clients to give them a heads up that they could cancel if they wanted but they said they'd prefer to meet me at the regular time and we'd look at conditions before making a decision. 20 minutes later the thunderstorms began and I got a call saying they'd take a raincheck... good idea. Pat was in town so I met up with her and we went to lunch at the Harbor House (which is a great place for lunch and a beer at Honokohau Harbor) and we're stopping off at Macy's on the way home when we got a call from my parents (who arrived for a visit the night before). They said a veritible river, full of boulders, was coming out of our driveway and blocking Napo'opo'o road. I'm telling them "oh, that happens all the time" thinking it's the typical 4-6 inches deep of water streams with rocks tumbling through that we often see in very
19 November 2007 (Thanh Nien News) - The historic buildings of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Vietnam is in danger of being damaged and washed away by floods.
World heritage sites of Hoi An endangered due to floods
by Tien Phong
Many ancient houses in the UNESCO-designated World Heritage site in the old town of Hoi An have been submerged in flood waters and are in danger of collapsing.
The 160 ancient houses, which display a unique blend of local and foreign influenced architectural styles due to its status as a major harbor town of the 16th and 17th centuries, are a major tourist attraction of the central region.
The recent floods have strongly affected the central provinces, killing over 50 people and causing extensive damage to property and crops.

The beauty of manufacturing handsets is that when something goes wrong, figures tend to make any blimp look spectacular.Take Nokia, for instance : 46M is not a Total Recall for them, but a big chunk of a whole year of production nonetheless. And unlike Mattel, this is not about dealing with cheap Chinese providers : Matsushita Battery Industrial is not your usual quick and dirty partner, but their batteries manufactured between Dec. 2005 and Nov. 2006 tend to overheat.Just like iPhone fans ("fans" as in afficionados, not the rotors which were hit by smelly matter at the Finnish giant's headquarters) : they tend to overheat for this beautiful device that pushes hype up to the sky - some people call that phenomenon "Skype" and actually, iPhone users can now call through a service called Skype. Technically, it should be dubbed Three Band Billiard VoIP : one share for your operator, one share for Skype, and one share for an obscure service / solution / gizmo provider. Trickier than trombo

Over the last few months the UK has been hit by some of the worse flooding it has seen in recent years which has been mirrored in many countries across the globe with many people suffering from the extreme weather conditions. I can’t speak for the rest of the world but no one in the UK could have even imagined the devastation which has happened, especially during a time in which we should be enjoying the highest temperatures of the year. Many of those affected by the floods all had plans and events happening in their lives, which were rudely interrupted by the unexpected devastation. One day they went to work, school or were maybe even sleeping to come home or to wake to their homes surrounded by water. Then there were those who fled for shelter in centres setup around the country to house those escaping the floods who left their properties not knowing what they would be coming back to with only a few frantically collected possessions with them. Now it’s incidents like this that can
The recent weather in Britain has provoked two reactions - one camp placing the blame on global warming, and the other claiming there is a strong historical precedent that rules out climate change. Paul Simons, writing in The Times, is of the latter opinion: But a simple fact has been overlooked: Britain is a wet country. Yes, it comes as a shock. Over the past few years we’ve become so used to years of scorching, Mediterranean-like summers, when hosepipe bans were the norm, vines were bursting with vintage grapes and water diviners were doing big business. But the truth is that our summers are supposed to be wet: it’s our climate.Simons is right on one level - weather patterns do not make climate change. Weather is erratic and chaotic. Hence, scientists talk of climate change. Climate is fairly stable over time, and the changes in the general trend are what meteorologists are concerned about. There is wealth of evidence that climate is changing, and that something different reall

Floodwaters cause misery, increase the death toll, force evacuation and cut essential services, disrupting human life. Today in different parts of the world, rivers prone to flooding are raging wrath and destruction.Rivers are bursting with swelling water levels as Britain experiences the worst floods in 60 years. In China, ‘Once-in-a-century’ rains and floods have displaced millions of people. Storms brought in heavy rain and floods plagued the Southern Plains since early June in Texas. Seasonal downpours have caused landslides and flash floods in Indonesia.Where does all that rain come from? Some blame it on the El Nino effect, others on varying temperatures of different seasons, which lead to different weather patterns. Prolonged rain can produce a river flood as water from upstream tributaries gradually builds up.A study by certain scientists indicates that Human-induced climate change through higher air temperatures and hotter seas is widely expected to lead to more droughts,
Rescuers struggled to get aid Tuesday to regions cut off by floods in central Indonesia, where landslides overwhelmed hundreds of homes and buried more than 50 people. Seven bodies have been recovered, but at least 45 remained buried since the landslides struck Sunday on Sulawesi island, said Rustam Pakaya, head of the Health Ministry's crisis center. "We believe they have been killed," Pakaya said.He said roads blocked by floods were preventing officials from distributing rice, instant noodles, blankets, medicine and other emergency supplies to some 16,000 forced from their homes.Related: 39 killed in Indonesia floods, landslides
Flash floods and landslides in central Indonesia inundated villages, destroyed bridges and roads, and sent thousands fleeing their homes, officials said Monday. At least 39 people were killed. The toll was expected to rise following days of torrential rain, with dozens more missing and rescuers only starting to reach isolated areas in the disaster zone, said Brig. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, a Sulawesi island police chief.
The first time we visited Cesky Krumlov was after the terrible floods of 2002. On our first night our friends gave us a tour of the town - it went something like this: " You see that line on the plaster of the house, that is where the flood water rose to."... "The water came down there and right up here." It was almost amusing the way the flood, "the worst in 1000 years" (although I am not sure who was measuring the water height in 1002) kept creeping into the tour of this most beautiful of towns. The floods clearly did huge damage and it has taken years to restore all the buildings. Like my friends, when giving a town tour to visitors, I find myself pointing out the flood line. But I never really understood why the flood made such an impression on my friends, until now. In the last few days floods have torn through my beloved Gloucestershire. Even Winchcombe, the little Cotswold town of my birth, was hit by almost tidal waters as they swept off the hills and, channelled into the corner
We hope that none of our landlords or tenants has suffered as a result of the floods.
If it was a few years ago before the Jubilee flood relief, a lot of the properties near the river would have been affected by this year, it has not been as bad as some of the recent incidents.

This bit of medieval wisdom comes courtesy of two Church of England bishops:
The Rt Rev Graham Dow, the Bishop of Carlisle, has shocked the liberal wing of the Church of England by suggesting that the floods that have caused chaos and death across the UK were caused by God after he was provoked by the introduction of gay equality.
"This is a strong and definite judgment because the world has been arrogant in going its own way," he said.
"We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused."
He and the Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, have argued that those affected are innocent victims but that the floods send a message to the British people on a collective basis.
The Bishop of Liverpool said:
"People no longer see natural disasters as an act of God.
"However, we are now reaping what we have sown. If we live in a profligate way then there are going to be consequences.
"God is exposing us to the truth of what we h

The Waldron (sometimes called Valley Brook as it emerges on one side of town) first shows itself off Macon Way. The mosaic is of Macon Meadows and gives you an idea how bad it got a few days ago. The water was up to the foot bridge at one point and spilled over to the playing fields. Several trees were completely surrounded and even the kids' play area (about 50 yards from these images) was briefly threatened. The worry is that young children might take chances by the brook's edge, slip and fail to recover from what is a strong current for a relatively minor bit of water. It makes you realise how lucky we are compared to towns and cities like Rotherham and Sheffield! Good luck to those folk...

As you may or may not know, Sydney has been experiencing some crazy rain lately (different to normal rain, don’t ask how). It has been so cold lately, I’m starting to understand what the mentos guy feels like.

A virus which causes debilitating fever and joint pain infected 472 people in Indonesia in the first quarter, half the number of cases reported for the whole of 2006, after floods expanded the breeding ground for the mosquito that transmits the disease. The outbreak of chikungunya fever occurred mostly in the central and western provinces of Java island, Indonesia's health ministry said in a statement. At least 98 people from Bekasi, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of the capital, Jakarta, were infected this month alone, the ministry said. Chikungunya means ``that which bends up'' in the Makonde language spoken in parts of east Africa, where it was first observed. Chikungunya is a member of the same family of viruses as Ross River and Barmah Forest that's caused human infections in Australia and other parts of the Pacific.
Photos from the National Geographic Magazine, among them:A two-week-old baby is evacuated from a flooded area in east Jakarta on February 4. Days of torrential rain caused heavy flooding in Indonesia's capital, leaving at least 100,000 people homeless and 50 dead, disaster officials say.
Floods which have inundated the Indonesian capital for more than a week have claimed 80 lives, officials said in the first definitive toll. "The breakdown of dead victims is 48 in Jakarta, 19 in West Java and 13 in Banten province"
China will donate 20,000 U.S. dollars to Indonesia to help reconstruct the flood-ravaged capital of Jakarta, said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu on Tuesday. "China's contribution through the Red Cross organizations of the two countries will assist the Indonesian government to help survivors of extensive flooding in and around Jakarta," Jiang said at a regular press conference.
Three consecutive days of torrential rain have inundated several districts in Jakarta. Beginning 1 February, the non-stop rains have caused some of the worst flooding since 2002. The next day, volunteers of Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation in Indonesia responded immediately and set up a Flood Relief Coordination Centre to assist evacuees. The volunteers split into three groups and went to three centers in Jakarta East, West and North to distribute food rations.
Type of Emergency Floods, triggered by heavy seasonal rain.Affected Areas (Please see attached map of the flood affected areas in Jakarta, Depok and Tangerang). Current Situation Floods inundate Indonesian capital, causing traffic chaos and misery. According to the city's flood crisis centre reported that the floods affected estimated 80 districts in Jakarta. It blocked roads and railways in Jakarta and thousands of people abandoned their homes in low-lying areas as torrential downpours virtually paralyzed the Indonesian capital on Friday, 2 February 2007. Streets normally jammed with traffic were much quieter as floods brought public transport to a near-standstill, preventing many people from getting to work or school. BMG informed that within the next week, heavy rains and thunders would hit Jakarta and its surrounding areas, with downpours between 50 - 100 millimeters per day. As comparison, the big flood in 2002 was the result of 200 millimeters per day downpours. Early warning
Flooding has killed at least 20 people and forced about 200,000 from their homes in the capital and its surroundings as overflowing rivers sent muddy water into homes and shops, reports say. Citing data from the city police, MetroTV television reported that the 20 people were killed after they were carried away by water flows, affected by electricity shortcut, and hit by damage properties.
Power supply cuts from heavy rain Thursday and Friday forced telecommunications operators to look for alternatives in battling network havoc in Jakarta.Telecommunications network disruptions begun when the state's largest telecom operator, PT Telkom, was forced to rely on a diesel-fired power generator to support 70,000 fixed phone connections after a cut to its main power supply caused by a flood at a major telephone exchange near Semanggi.
Flooding has killed at least five people and left more than 100,000 others homeless in the Indonesian capital, officials said Saturday as neck-high waters submerged large sections of the city. The country's meteorology department forecast more rains Saturday and over the next two weeks.
Two days of heavy rain triggered floods across the Indonesian capital on Friday, washing into thousands of homes and forcing residents to flee, witnesses and officials said. Waters reached four-meters (13 feet) high in some places in Jakarta, home to some 12 million people. The city's flood crisis center recorded almost 80 districts where serious flooding had occurred. The waters inundated inner-city slum areas close to rivers as well as middle-class housing complexes on the city's outskirts, sending thousands to higher ground or the second floor of their homes.
