It would be a heartless soul who wanted to stop federal aid to places devastated by floods. Yet, are there any good economic reasons for appearing to be heartless? Some areas are very prone to flooding (e.g. New Orleans) Because they are prone to flooding, house prices will be lower than average. Therefore, vulnerable areas of housing often attract low income households. Therefore, when floods hit

The Flooding Review by Sir Michael Pitt into this year's unprecedented flooding in Britain has now been published and strongly recommended that 'planning for flooding should have the same priority as terrorism or flu prevention' from the Government downwards, and also 'urged local government and emergency services to improve their knowledge and practices'.As the BBC report:'The review looked at the lessons to be learnt from the floods and highlights a long list of failings. They include:- no national flood emergency plan- no clear responsibility for dealing with urban flooding- no systematic stockpiling of emergency equipment, such as boats.According to the report, the floods in June and July led to the biggest loss of critical infrastructure since World War II.It said flooding is only likely to get worse and society needs to adapt.'"We're all facing up to climate change and there are all sorts of implications for the country in terms of having to adapt to that change," Sir Mich
At the Broadgate Open Area Forum, the Environment Agency explained their new flood warning scheme and the floodrisks faced by a number of Ribbleside communities - all in high risk flood zones due to the potential for fluvial flooding events (i.e. river-based rainfall spate waters and land run-off and drain problems rather than from the sea), and emphasised that:"The key message is that flooding is a risk and people who live in this area should start now to prepare for what they would do if their property was flooded."Whilst, as the Lancashire Evening Post report, the risks of a serious flood event in Broadgate and Penwortham are deemed to be approximately a one-in-75 year risk, this does mean we are at high risk - and that such an event may not wait 75 years before it arrives!Lower Penwortham residents will also have a chance to find out about the new flood warning scheme from the Environment Agency at the Penwortham Area Committee in Kingsfold Community Centre Tuesday 4th December at
A report has been published by the Local Government Association (LGA) today which claims that 'Action is needed "urgently"' to protect communities and infrastructure against flooding across the country.'The chairman of the LGA's environment board, Paul Bettison, said the summer floods had caused "carnage" and "ruined the lives of thousands of people" as well as costing billions.'The LGA argue that there urgently needs to be 'more investment in flood defences and drainage' - and that the three years Local Councils will have to wait to see the money pledged by the Government for these measures "is simply too long to wait"."There is no guarantee we will not see a repeat of the heavy rainfall which led to that flooding, and so it is vital we start improving our systems and defences as soon as possible."The government provided additional funding to deal with the clean-up operation over the summer. The prime minister's decision to invest more in flood defences was also a positive mov

Please Support Victims of Sinú River Flooding'Save The Ribble' has received this urgent call from Friends of the Earth Colombia (CENSAT Agua Viva), it has many chilling echoes of the situation in Britain, where residents of Hull and Doncaster still face official inaction weeks after catastrophic flooding to their homes:After intense rain showers more than 20,000 people living on the banks of the Sin River in San Pelayo, Cereté Lorica in Montería, Colombia were forced to find temporary shelter or be relocated to higher land. The summer of 2007, in the United Kingdom at least, hasn't exactly been what many people and businesses would have hoped for. With record rainfall in many parts of the UK, people and businesses have had to deal with flooding, storm damage and in some cases fatalities. So is Climate Change anything to do with this unusual summer weather and is it indeed something we should get used to on a more regular basis? Or is summer 2007 just a freak occurence that isn't likely to hit our homes and businesses more often? If you read the press or watch the news then unfortunately there seems no definative answers to these questions so whilst the "experts" are looking into why these storms and flooding has occured, Northern Counties Insurance Brokers have come up with these useful tips on how you can help avoid flooding for your business.PRE LOSS1) Ensure where possible all electrical equipment and stock is stored at least four feet above ground2) Turn off electrical equipment apart from burglar ala

What a week! Anyone who’s been watching the news will have seen a bit about the severe flooding ‘going about’. I live in a small place called Hessle, which must have had one footpath not blocked off by the police and army. It’s rubbish. I hate getting wet, and especially wet and cold. And although havin a pond instead of a back garden made me feel fancy for a bit, it got boring pretty quick.
Some plces though got it really nasty with major floods claiming more than one life so in hindsight we got off pretty lucky.
And the only thing that can make being waist deep in dirty water worse….a piece of soggy poo floating 6 inches from your nose! Seriously will people please clean up their dogs crud. Surely if this flooding has taught us anything, please let it be that dog/cat poo is rubbish. Poo and flood waters don’t mix!….or rather they do, and make a grotty kind of soup, which is just gross!
Best wishes to anyone else who got trapped in it!
Bloody hell, the weather has been rough lately, hasn’t it?
Basically, were suffering very unseasonal weather in the UK at the moment, with floods in some areas of the country. I think everywhere in the UK has seen a lot of rain in the past few days. It’s not global warming, oh no, it’s god telling us to cancel Wimbledon for the vain UK hope, television ruining, most pointless “sport” in the history of the world.
There were some casualties in the family due to the weather. My mum, who has never flown, decided that she didn’t want to spend her first trip on a plane (which was today) with a hell of a lot of turbulence, so cancelled her short break to Milan. Being in a similar position and still being a little apprehensive of flying even now, I can’t say I blame her. I can blame her for going to Chester with both my brothers, and going to the fabulous Temple Bar. The bastards. They do the nicest curry there, and spent the day drinking and playing i
These images are of Moricetown Canyon, a tourist trap, about 30 minutes north of Smithers, where the Bulkley River squeezes through a narrow canyon. The top image is of the river at it's lowest, which is usually in the late summer. The lower pic was taken (the same spot) very recently.Unfortunately, the area we were sandbagging recently is becoming flooded regardless, as the river overflowed it's banks downstream of the dike and is working it's way back. The evacuations are well under way.But like I said before, it's the other towns that have mass populations living on river flood plains that are the real concern. Terrace BC has declared a state of emergency I hear. The Bulkley River heads NW to Terrace. The Fraser River (Prince George) heads south, where the problems will increasingly arise as this mass of water makes its way down to southwestern BC.Thanks to Beaner for the images. When I say that other areas have it worse than we do, here are a couple of pictures of the Skeena River
The Bulkley River has gone over it's banks in a few places in the Smithers area already. Our Par 3 golf course is now submerged.Today I left work early to help my cousins and many other volunteers sandbag the banks of the river to help prevent about 20 homes from getting washed out.The hot weather on the weekend followed by the wet system that moved in on Sunday have made problems worse and is only going to get worse yet. The peak of this flooding is estimated to be 2 weeks away still. We could very well see the worst flooding from this river in recorded history. Possibly. While my sympathy for people living on flood plains only goes so far, it is quite saddening to see the potential devastation here.Hopefully, the dikes that we put up today hold up. But they may not.If they don't, I'll capture as many images as possible, and use the proper setting on my wife's camera this time (hence the black and white!)CTV news made an appearance at the worst site today. The footage is limited, b
Communities and home-owners along the banks of the Fraser, Bulkey and Skeena Rivers in British Columbia are on evacuation warning. The earliest evacuations could begin on Tuesday in northern BC, as a low-pressure storm system moves over B.C from the southwest, probably dumping large amounts of rain.(pictured).The 33 degree celsius-plus weather has already raised the rivers by several feet this weekend, as there is still a lot of snow in the many mountain ranges along Western BC. Way too much snow.If the storm system brings a lot of rain and the temperatures rise again later in the week, we could see the biggest flooding in this area in years. The river levels are forecasted to be the highest since 1972.For now, even in my hometown of Smithers, residents flock to the rivers occasionally to check the levels and watch the water come up. Honestly, our dark, curious sides actually want to see nature inflict it's wrath. Hell, I love natural disasters even if it is at the expense of others'
After the recent flooding that occured in Westchester County, FEMA has set up several sites to help the victims of these floods. Flood effects can be local, impacting a neighborhood or community, or very large, affecting entire river basins and multiple states. However, all floods are not alike. Some floods develop slowly, sometimes over a period of days. But flash floods can develop quickly, sometimes in just a few minutes and without any visible signs of rain. Flash floods often have a dangerous wall of roaring water that carries rocks, mud, and other debris and can sweep away most things in its path. Overland flooding occurs outside a defined river or stream, such as when a levee is breached, but still can be destructive. Flooding can also occur when a dam breaks, producing effects s
