      Time flies
Here was my stream of consciousness from earlier today: Look at all that dust on the dresser! I just dusted last week! Was that last week? Yeah, I think so. Right before we left on vacation. No, Family Camp was last week. And we had a camp the week before that. Did we really leave on vacation more than three weeks ago? Yeah, we left in June. June 27th. I can't believe I haven't dusted

      Day 7: Lake Flies
More driving today as we completed 2/3 of our round-the-island journey by traveling over 1000km from the starting point. Our first stop was Mývatn (米湖), a highly popular lake in Iceland. You would not miss its special feature the moment you step out of the car - flies. These flies are important to the ecosystem by providing food for birds and fishes so we were asked not to harm them (and just

Bryan Hoch/MLB.com:After missing most of Spring Training due to injury, Sean Henn has found a new opportunity in San Diego. The left-hander was claimed off waivers by the Padres from the Yankees on Friday. Henn, 27, was 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA in eight relief appearances this season between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Class A Tampa. He was designated for assignment to create a roster spot on April 30, when the Yankees signed catcher Chad Moeller to a Major League contract. Originally considered a contender to make New York's bullpen out of Spring Training as a lefty specialist, Henn was limited to just three Grapefruit League appearances due to tendinitis in his left shoulder and was outpitched by non-roster invitee Billy Traber, who subsequently made the Yankees' Opening Day roster.

      Picture Winged Flies
Two kinds of fruit fly accidentally arrived in Hawaii long ago when these oceanic islands were young. From them more than 800 species known as picture wings are believed to be descended, some well known, others awaiting investigation or even discovery. Picture wing flies have striking black and white patterns on their wings, and are larger than many of the others.Several different kinds of picture wings live together in the same patch of forest. So what stops them interbreeding? The answer lies in their bizarre courtship rituals and contests, for which males of each kind have their own special body design and behaviour. These males are fighting for the right to mate with a female of their type. In this trial of strength each contestant recognises the body and body language of its rival. So

Catching Flies: Both Honey and Vinegar Needed
You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Are we freethinkers (i.e., atheists, humanists, agnostics) likely to be more influential by promoting reason and secular morality rather than railing against superstition? Should we not be expending more energy toward serving as examples of how to live without religious delusion and less on mockery and criticism of religion? Maybe it is more complex than this simple dichotomy would suggest.Let me get one bit of self-disclosure out of the way first. I've been going through a vinegar-filled phase lately. If you look over my post for the last couple weeks, you'll see it as clearly as I feel it. My tone has been angrier, and I've been doing way more bitching about religion than promoting reason or other healthy solutions. I'm out of balance

Highlights included a spectacular five course New Year's eve meal at Casanis in Marbella Old Town (definitely one of my favourite restaurants on the coast); bowling at La Canada (an excellent use of a rainy day); and an afternoon spent walking around Casares (good for clearing the lungs and the view along the coast from the castle on the top of the hill is breaktaking). There aren't that many new developments to report, but the refurbished and revamped Hotel La Duquesa looks very smart and I'm looking forward to trying out the new spa. As well as traditional treatments like massages, manicures and pedicures, you can also pay a daily fee to use all the different temperature pools and saunas. Can't wait!

Richardson Flies From Clinton's Coop: Endorses Obama
Bill Richardson, former Clinton Secretary of Energy, now former friend and crony, has left the Clinton nest and flown straight to the Obama camp, endorsement in hand with visions of a Vice-President slot dancing in his head.In an email sent to the Obama camp Richardson praised Hillary as "a distinguished leader with vast experience" while gushing about Obama who would be in Richardson's words, "a historic and great president who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad".According to the Brit newspaper, the Telegraph, foreign corespondent Toby Harden claims Richardson's importance as an endorsement force ranks third after Al Gore and John Edwards. Fall, flies and food...
I was rather grumpy this morning, I got out of the wrong side of the bed. Sixty foot drop - straight down, that's enough to make anyone grumpy! Things got worse, I saw a huge cloud of flies in the distance which usually means there's something good to eat. But the flies were just following the gardener around, he'd fallen into the compost bin again. Nothing on the bird-table except for a three week old apple core. The humans must be sleeping in. I tried tap dancing on their roof to get them up but no joy. There is some suet they hung from a branch in a mesh bag so that big birds like me can't scoff it all ....

The Joy Formidable - While The Flies
Batten down the hatches cause you’ll soon be listening to the contemporary sound of an air raid siren. In its wake will be the ferocious noise of dropping bombs but instead of dispensing lethal carnage these bombs contain the ingredients that could yet herald the UK’s most promising new band. Ritzy, Rhydian and Justin are hot off the press (forming less than a year ago) and much like that other hotly tipped act the Ting Tings they have yet to release a record (slight dramatic licence). The Joy Formidable are particularly well named because their music is infected with such an irresistable joie-de-vivre. Steve Lamacq has been going ga-ga for ‘Austere’ and it is easy to see why when you clasp ears on guitars going at it at full throttle. I prefer ‘When The Flies’ which supports m

      Fruit Flies
This 80 year old woman thought she had the crabs, so she goes to the doctor. "Doctor I think I have the crabs." "When was the last time you had sex?" The doctor asks. "I have never had sex. I'm still a virgin." she replied. The doctor thought this was very strange so he told her to get on the table and he would examine her. After the examination he said, "I have some good news and bad news for you. The good news is you don't have the crabs. The bad news is you've got fruit flies." "Fruit flies?" asks granny. "Yeah," says the doctor. "Your cherry rotted."
