Seems every publishing house is raiding the senior comic book characters. Must be that copyrights have elapsed or the ink well is drying up. Where are the exciting new characters this young generation is creating today? Most likely on the net for free, nobody is ready to gamble on new projects. Word has it that Mike Allred who is a great creator of original concepts is taking on Fletcher Hanks’ character Stardust. I really enjoyed the original comic reprinted by Fantagraphics. A real blast. The early artwork of this new project by Image Comics has me scratching my head. Why? The Golden Age characters did not graduate to the big show because they were not that good to start with. Alex Ross with super-hero realism art for both Marvel and DC of their older characters got him accolades. However, the characters he was given were strong characters with a rich history. When I first read about this book I knew exactly what I was getting. The image of "Stardust" was etched in my skull from the back cover of "Men Of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book", by Gerad Jones. Fletcher Hanks has to be the Ed Wood of comics. The stories are so wild, that you enjoy the stupidity of it all. The gem in this book is Paul Karasik’s story of "Whatever Happened to Fletcher Hanks". This story is either a tribute to It’s a Good Life, If You Don’t Weaken by Seth or just about every fan-boy who lives in his basement searches for their heroes or misplaced youth. Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher prevailed over former US Rep. Anne Northup in the Republican primary for Governor yesterday. Fletcher, who has been marred in scandal throughout most of his term, defeated Northup 50%-37%.On the Democratic side, former Lieutenant Governor Steve Beshear managed to avoid a runoff willing 41% of the vote in a six way race. He ran far ahead of Brunce Lunsford, who got 21%. The two were expected to be tossed into a June runoff, but Beshear and his running mate, State Senator and 2004 US Senate nominee Dan Mongiardo, crossed the 40% threshold to avoid one.Interesting Fact: Beshear won 142, 733 votes in the primary. On the GOP side, Fletcher won 101, 256. In a general election with those numbers, Beshear would defeat Fletcher 58%-42%. Republicans are down in Kentucky due to Fletcher's corruption issues, the decisive primary, and because of national issues that have been bad for Republicans.Beshear comes out of the primaries as the favorite in the general.

Kate Garrett is a woman with problems. She is a wilderness guide with a so-so business in the Everglades. Her ex is a controlling jerk who, even after the divorce, likes to make her life miserable. He send the kids to stay with her right before a hurricane hits the Florida coast. From there her problems get worse. A bus full of convicts crashes, and her jeep gets stolen. Later those same convicts kidnap her and force her to help them escape through the swamps, while getting hammered by the storm. Kate is a heroine with character. She has problems that many of us deal with every day. Her character is richly layered and if she were real, I would hang out with her. She is tough and resourceful. She does not run from her problems she tackles them and beats them. This story is excellent. The bad guys are great, the good guys are awesome. The setting is superbly done. I cannot say enough good things about this book.
