Gates of Vienna was my first blog after The Corner (but I shouldn't really count that one, should I). One thing that separates Gates of Vienna from other blogs is its original essays, which skip the silliness to get to the crux of whatever issue they're dealing with. I couldn't imagine, for example, GoV wasting time on a Valerie Plame column, (as if people supported the war one day, read about Valerie Plame, and then turned against it; it's, frankly, insulting to everybody who brings it up). Anyways, Fjordman once again identifies the crucial battle of our time in this article. While you're there, check out some of the others.

In my criticism of the European Union, I have been accused of being too positive towards the nation state. It is true that Western civilization isn't exclusively about nation states. The Renaissance took place in the city states of Italy while nation states were non-existent or weak.
