Excerpt from the WSJ: Fitch Ratings said U.S. life insurers have an estimated $7 billion to $8 billion in unrealized losses on subprime and Alt-A investments. Fitch, which on Jan. 29, raised Indonesia's debt rating outlook to ``positive,'' is waiting for an increase in foreign direct investment levels and improvement in the capital account before it increases the country's rating, said James McCormack, head of Fitch's Asian sovereign ratings. Turkey, which shares Indonesia's BB- rating, a junk ranking, had $59.5 billion of reserves at the end of last month. Neighboring Thailand, which is rated BBB+, the third-lowest investment grade rating, had $67.7 billion in reserves. The Philippines has $19.89 billion of reserves.

Fitch affirmed it long-term foreign currency debt rating of BB- rating, its third highest non-investment grade rating, for Southeast Asia's largest economy. The ``positive'' outlook means that the rating company is more inclined to raise its ratings.

Merrill Lynch recently upgraded ANF, causing the stock to move up $5 since the new year began. I have been bullish on ANF since June when I recommended it at $55 and if you had followed my advice, you would be up 37%. However, it is time to move out of ANF now. Fitch Ratings released a report yesterday warning that GM and Ford are facing a severe cash drain in '08. Fitch rated both GM and Ford at "B" levels, a non-investment grade. They blame the usual suspects for the poor outlook: sagging US sales, high fuel costs and rising manufacturing costs-- all while Ford and GM seek to restructure. Fitch says the negative outlook on the two companies will persist until either the US economy improves or the firms prove to investors that their cash flow position has improved significantly (Fitch would not comment on a scenario involving Hell freezing over).
