Fishy Business: Discarded Fish Skin Fashion
Many people who lived near rivers and oceans have used fish skin throughout history. It's not an original idea and tanned fish skins have long been used in Russia and Japan, where they were employed to bind sword handles. What's new is the way these discards are put to use in this brave new world. Two of them show a promising future.

Caring for Betta Fish - How to Keep Your Fishy Friend Healthy
The Betta fish, also know as the Siamese fighting fish, is one of the most popular types of fish in the world. It is one of the most beautiful and recognizable types of fish. It'is also low maintenance compared to other pets. Caring for Betta fish is relatively easy as long as you follow a few simple rules. Follow the Betta fish care tips below and you'll be on your way to a happy and healthy pet. 1. Betta's need plenty of room to swim around, so a large enough bowl is important. They also need access to the surface. Betta's have a specialized respiratory organ that allows them to breath air directly from the atmosphere. 2. Betta fish do not require water filtration (in fact, they do better in standing water) so no pumps are necessary. But the water must be replaced every 3 days. The new

As part of my efforts to become financially independent, I am looking to diversify my investments.  Part of the goal is to be able to generate regular, recurring income.  The other part is to ensure that my portfolio covers a wide range of assets so I am not at risk if a single asset class does poorly. Since most of my portfolio is in stocks and bonds right now, adding real estate is something I am looking into.  I have been studying materials and trying to learn about the industry before I jump in.  Part of my learning process has been looking at online materials, including blogs, about real estate. One of those, Real Estate Investing for Real, has an interesting post on one of the homes they looked at.  They titled it A Fishy Abandoned House Tale.  This is not a typical tale, otherwise real estate investing would be a poor choice of careers. That kind of story is why I am not rushing in to real estate.  Still, I am convinced that real estate is an important asset class to add,

One of the many things my mother worried about when I told I would be going off to Senegal was my health. The bit about the yellow fever shot scared her quite a bit, of course, plus there was the laundry list of other dangers including (but by no means limited to!) malaria, typhoid, rabies, dengue, meningitis, amoebic dysentery, etc., etc. I think I got about 9 different vaccinations before I left home, but paradoxically, the sickest I got was when I was trying to avoid getting sick: I had a craving for eggplants and washed them in Clorox (or eau de javel as it is known here). I had the runs for three days, and I am convinced that it was not the fault of the poor blameless vegetable but the radical steps I took to cleanse it. I no longer brush my teeth with bottled water as I did at first, which just goes to show the extent to which I have let down my guard. (more…)

She now has a not very pretty pout that would be any trout’s envy. But, how did she end up with the “fishy” appearance? The thing is she wanted to look prettier; so she decided to take lip injections to enhance the appeal of her lips. She kept it all very hush-hush. A furtive visit to a Hollywood plastic surgeon and some pin-pricks ensued. But she got more than she had wanted. Of all the materials you wouldn’t want to put against your body, fish skin has got to be pretty high on the list. But now Thai entrepreneurs have developed a way of processing skins of tropical fish to make them into durable leather. And certainly the most eye-catching, and stomach turning, item they have developed is the fish-skin bikini. However perhaps it’s not so bad, the model who was wearing the item, Sudara Sae-lin said, “It’s comfortable. The bikini can really breath and I like that it’s waterproof, it means it can dry more easily.” Despite the obvious environmental benefits I really don’t think many girls or guys would find the sight or feel of a bikini made of old dead fish skin that sexy. While the effort must be applauded I think we’ll be forgiven for preferring our fish nicely cooked with a drizzle of lemon and a glass of white wine.

Nothing like being on the water, chatting, enjoying an AM snack, chugging down some home made hot cocoa, and just watching the birds catch fish, and Ted go by. Yes, we saw Ted and Cindy as they left on their big adventure out to sea and warmer waters south. It was great to see them heading out. As for us… we may try again. Our Last Fishy Performance
An animal entering our house would be wise to bring an updated will and phone numbers for next-of-kin. We’ve boxed and buried guinea pigs, flushed fish, and had hermit crabs wander away in the middle of an electrifying race, never to be seen again.  Back in June we managed to kill a crawfish and Speedy the goldfish on consecutive days.  The very first post I wrote was about the death of a different goldfish named Speedy and his enemy, Brownie. Right now we have three pets, though that number could change at any moment.  Elvis, the dog from Hell, has managed to stick around for a couple of years now, mainly through sheer cussedness.  Drew’s parakeet, Texas Ranger, requires little care.  He’s extremely shy and has yet to utter a word, which is a great disappointment to Drew and quite a relief to me. Finally, there is the fish who swims in his bowl by the coffee maker, looking at us with baleful eyes, knowing his days are numbered.  He can feel his impending demise

So when my first aunt asked if I wanted to go, I said YES and we did the touristy thing! We started the day early, which is a good thing because we got lost. We took the wrong tram and ended up at a beach on the other side of the island. At least, we had a chance to see the different beaches there. That way, I know which beaches to go to if I happen to convince my friends to come to Sentosa for the day. It was a very refreshing change for me as the air smelled like the sea and flowers, so different from the air in the city. Anyway, we finally arrived at the place and there was already a crowd. I was excited that there was a rock pool at the entrance where we could touch the exhibit. However, I was somewhat disgusted with the way the shark felt; leathery and slimy yet kind of cool. The other cool thing they had at the entrance was the interactive

Swim the Sound in fur coat? Bear's behavior is a bit fishy
Keith ErvinSeattle Times staff reporterScott Fischbach had just raised the U.S. flag at the Point Robinson Lighthouse on Maury Island when he heard a splash. Turning toward the water, he saw a startling sight: a young black bear in the water, heading straight from the eastern point of the island out into Puget Sound. For days, the bear had been the talk of Vashon and Maury islands, as people caught occasional glimpses of the furry beast and grown-ups warned children not to wander into the woods. Now, the bear is the talk of Des Moines and Kent, where it has been wandering since its two-mile swim across Puget Sound shipping lanes Friday morning. Not long after the bear made landfall just north of Saltwater State Park, Des Moines police received a rash of phone calls from residents nervous at the sight of a bear strolling across streets and lawns. "It didn't seem to be aggressive or anything — just wandered around," said Police Sgt. Bob Collins. State Fish and Wildlife officers

To get a meal, you have to do a lot of pushing and shoving and when you finally get to where you want to be, it’s a screaming match to get your order in. Well worth it though; it was damn good seafood. And I’m not really a seafood-y person. To top off the day, we all joined in in waxing Matt’s chest. There's Something "Fishy" at 95.9 FM (The Fish)
It was at least two or three years ago, maybe a little longer, when I heard an ad on our local Christian radio station that caught me off guard. It was one of the DJ’s from “The Fish”, pumping some type of magical weight loss elixir like Body Solutions or Corti-Slim. She talked about how just a spoonful-a-day had caused her to lose some amount of weight, and now her life was all better. It struck me funny, because I guess I would expect more from a semi-prominent Christian than a pitch of a better life through better looks. I’m not opposed to health or weight loss, but it was just cheeseball and had very little to do with Christian contentment. In truth, it sounded a lot more like the lies that satan feeds so many of us every day. You of course can imagine the good laugh I had about six months later, when the Food and Drug Administration announced that that product had absolutely no weight loss qualities. In other words, it was bogus. While I was saddened that a

Bush was saying that he was keeping our country safe. Why is all of this changing around the midterm election?Doesn't anyone else find it a bit odd that Saddam's trial has been going on for over a year (it began in October of 2005) and they have never been able to reach a decision until now, right before midterm elections? Today, Saddam Hussein has been sentenced to death. Of course, this would give the Republicans an extra boost in the polls. Putting two and two together, one could determine that someone may have been paid off to finally have a decision made in the Saddam trial, an effort to get more votes for the GOP.But the dishonesty doesn't stop there. Think of how high the gas prices have been. Have you noticed they have been working their way down these last few months leading up to

He’s going to Republican states, all 10 states that he carried. So he’s got a pretty narrow mission here, doesn’t he, in the final days? SENIOR ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL: Well, we’re focusing his energy on places where he can best turn out the vote for Republican candidates. These are all races that are close. These are all races that are likely going to come down to turnout. And so that’s the nature of all these visits. Any guesses as to who the “SENIOR ADMINSTRATION OFFICIAL” is? Uncle Karl is my bet. Vote Til Your Fingers Hurt (Or Until Someone Notices Something Fishy Going On)
Remember how George Bush won’t answer questions about how he’ll work with a Democratically controlled Congress because he ‘doesn’t think that’ll happen.’ Bush has claimed that Republicans will continue to control Congress after the elections, despite polling and what he called conventional wisdom showing a GOP loss in at least one house of Congress. I remarked earlier in a comment here that the only way Bush could be so confident would be if he was either seriously deluded or knew something we don’t know. Like the fact that most electronic voting systems are neither secure or verifiable, making it all too easy to swing ‘official’ tallies one way or the other. Meaning, Bush isn’t worried because the GOP is all ready to bring home another victory, one way or another. Today, Brad Blog brings us another piece in the growing pile of pieces that show just how easy it is to hack electronic voting systems. This time it is the Sequo

Paging through my notes, we're entering into the last full week of astrological calm that we're likely to see until December. With Sun,Venus and Mars moving toward the end of Libra, this is also a good time to solidify partnerships and to make peace before these three planets plunge into the dark waters of Scorpio next week. A standout alignment this weekend involves Mercury square Neptune -often the sign of a forked tongue. Deceptions, confusions, misinformation, disappearances, tamperings, straw men, shell games and red herrings. With Mercury also in Scorpio, there is a higher probability of conspiracies and manipulations as well.
