FISHERIES: Supreme Court of Canada says British Columbia’s aboriginal-only fishery constitutional
The Supreme Court of the United States was not the only Supreme Court to recently rule on some interesting cases. Before taking summer recess the Supreme Court of Canada decided the constitutionality of a communal fishing license issued to aboriginal fishers in R. v. Kapp, 2008 SCC 41. The Canadian government implemented an affirmative action [...]

      Fisheries off target
In the first five months of the year, the fish industry exported only US$1.5 billion of goods, $3 billion short of its target. The output of shrimp, one of the country’s most important seafood exports, will probably be hit hard this year by disease and reductions in breeding farms. Experts predict it will only meet 30 to 40 per cent of seafood processors’demand. The hectares devoted to shrim

FISHERIES: Working in the commerical fishing industry isn't easy
Perhaps one of the most if not dangerous jobs in America and perhaps in most parts of the world is working on a commercial fishing vessel. Working in agriculture, coalmines, logging and steel are certainly dangerous jobs too. All of these jobs occur within the realm of extracting and managing natural resources. To help manage natural resources scientists often work alongside the natural resource users therefore risking their lives too.Fisheries observers often work on commercial fishing vessels to gather data. These data are used to manage the fisheries that we depend on as a food source. I worked as a fisheries observer on the Western Atlantic from Georges Bank south to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The boats that fisheries observers work on might be a small inshore 15-foot gillnet

National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Goes to Online Billfish Reporting
Effective October 17 of this year, anglers should report non-tournament landings of Atlantic marlins, sailfish and swordfish to the NMFS online through the new web-based reporting system at http://www.hmspermits.gov. To log on and report a swordfish or billfish landing anglers will to have their Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Angling or Charter/Headboat permit number handy, along with their trip date, catch and fishing gear information. A confirmation number will be provided after a successful complete report. Tournament landings information will continue to be provided to the NMFS by tournament directors. While switching to online reporting as the primary portal, the agency will continue to man the toll free phone number currently in use.TBF reminds all billfish anglers that timely and accurate reporting of landings is a vital element of fisheries conservation and management."Bite Me" Matava Resort Kadavu Fiji Islands www.matava.com

Canada and Spain sign agreement about conservation of fisheries
In a better spirit and more wisely than in past wrangles about fishing, Loyola Hearn, the Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Elena Espinosa, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in Spain, signed a MOU agreement on September 9th.  The Canada-Spain MOU will advance technical, scientific, economic, and enforcement efforts related to fisheries issues, particularly in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. This includes promoting joint participation in research projects, encouraging commercial exchanges, and facilitating initiatives that will continue to improve the conservation and management of regulated fisheries. The  Spanish oceanographic vessel Vizconde de Eza The fishing industry is very important to both Canada and Spain. Both countries have reached the conclusion that, by establishing broader science networks, they can learn from one another and improve their marine science capacity.  Thus,  a strong scientific foundation will be established for p

Ribble Fisheries Consultative Association Oppose Ribble Barrage
The body responsible for Angling interests on the Ribble - and consequently concerned with the health of the River Ribble and its ecosystem - have published their position paper regarding the Ribble barrage proposal. The Ribble Fisheries Consultative Association are unreservedly opposed to the Ribble barrage scheme as they argue that "The building of a barrage across the Ribble most certainly constitutes the greatest threat yet to migratory fish and would irrevocably change the ecology of the whole river system."Their position is strongly supported by the Anglers Conservation Association (ACA), whose own position opposing the Ribble barrage is also published below the RFCA position statement.'RIBBLE FISHERIES CONSULTATIVE ASSOCIATIONPROPOSED RIBBLE BARRAGE – POSITION PAPERWHO ARE WE?The RFCA is the umbrella organisation that represents angling interests on the Ribble Catchment. Home Farm Fisheries in Alsager
Just before the kids go back to school I was keen to give them a decent bit of fishing time. We had an hour at Hassall Green (no joy, too many barges) and then an hour on Ullswater (needle in a haystack springs to mind). So this morning Mrs Crewe blog dropped us off in Alsager at Home Farm Fisheries. As you go into Alsager (Crewe Road), past the Plough pub and towards the village centre, there's a turning on the right into a new(ish) housing estate on Hall Drive. You have cul-de-sacs to the left and right, then you arrive at a railway underpass. Carry on along the dirt track for about 50 yards and you come to three gorgeous little pools. One is for match fishing, one is a specimen carp pool and the smallest is a feeder pool. We hit the latter and the lads filled their boots. Just £4 each, they reeled in perch, roach and a few feisty gudgeon. They loved it. I reckon I've seen enough to get back into it all, especially if the lads continue to show interest. This spot is a first-come,
