First World Problem / Third World Threat: Why India must lead the campaign against climate change
Global warming is a global problem, yet huge disparities exist between those who are responsible for the problem and those who will suffer its effects. Most notably, developing nations will suffer from global warming more than developed nations for two reasons: 1.) they lack the infrastructure to protect against the damage and 2.) they tend to inhabit more vulnerable, less forgiving geographic spaces. To understand this relationship, I will focus on India, a developing nation rising in the global economy, and its struggle to negotiate the international territory of greenhouse gas legislation. The Inequalities of Climate Change: In April, the International Herald Tribune published an article on the inequalities of global warming. It states: “In almost every instance, the people most at risk from climate change live in countries that have contributed least to the atmospheric buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases linked to the recent warming of the planet.” Fu

First World War at the Gallery of Modern Art Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s modern art collection is housed in two adjacent buildings, the Dean Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art, to the west of the city centre in Dean. The Dean Gallery I paid a brief visit to the Gallery of Modern Art this week. I know it’s not always possible but I much prefer short visits to galleries and museums where you focus on a specific topic or artist. If I try to spend hours during a visit, I just feel that I can’t take it all in. I looked at the black and white works depicting the Fist World War. The were two pieces which made the biggest impression on me. The Card Players by Otto Dix which portrays 3 war veterans injured during action, one is playing with his mouth, another with his foot.  The other was “Death Marches” by Percy Smith, one of seven in the Dance of Death series of etchings from 1919. It shows the eager new infantry recruits marching four abreast with the ghostly figure of Death surveying its fresh batch of v

First World War veterans don't want state funeral
From CBC News: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/01/02/veteran-funeral.html In what I can only hope is a move made under the idea of “better late than never”, the last World War I veteran to die has been offered a state funeral. Problem is, there’s three World War I veterans still living, and none of them want a state funeral. One such veteran, Lloyd Clemett, has nailed the problem exactly: “He himself feels there should not be attention given to the last person, but the attention should be given to them all,” Good for them for refusing a state funeral for now. Now I think a state funeral is more than well deserved by these men, but at the very least the offer needs to be extended to all three veterans. As well, there needs to be some way of educating young people about the sacrifices made by the men and women involved in the Great War. Soon we won’t have these gentlemen, and even people my age rarely understand just how much these people were
