Gas fireplaces are not only there to keep you a little extra toasty in the winter months, but they can significantly reduce heating costs as well. While it is true that the most important thing about the fireplace is the fact that it can give off heat, another thing which you should definitely consider is your fireplace grate. Most people tend to disregard it and just be content with the fact that they have one. However, these grates actually have lots [...]
Fireplace rugs help protect the floor area in front of your fireplace. On occasion, sparks and even pieces of wood may fall out and you need something to protect the floor area. Not many people have carpeting in front of their fireplace, but they do, they need something to protect it. Most people will have a hard flooring of some type in their fireplace room but it still needs protecting. These rugs are specifically designed to withstand heat. Fireplace rugs must be fire resistant which is extremely important considering where they are placed. Studies find that rugs made of fiberglass are the best quality, while rugs made of wool are considered the next best. Other materials used to make these type of rugs is nylon and olefin, however these are not as a high a quality as fiberglass or wool
This is most true when dealing with real wood burning fireplaces as you have not only the fireplace, but the chimney as well. It is important to remember that cleaning a fireplace is a messy job but one that must be done. So do not attempt to do this in your best clothes because the [...]
Electric fireplaces now make owning a fireplace more inclusive than ever. There is nothing worse than coming in after a hard day and when you finally get a decent fire going, all you get is smoke coming back into the room. It burns the eyes and lungs, and you wind up having to open windows and doors to let the cold air in to air the room out. That smell gets into all of the fabrics in the house as well as in your clothes, and it seems to take forever to get rid of it.Many of the common smoking problems deal with the fact that a fire needs to be supplied with a large amount of make up air as one of its three primary elements, as well as needing to have an adequate opening through the chimney to the outside in order to exhaust out the smoke and gases so that they don't come back into the room. Below is a list of the top ten possible reasons and their solutions as
Here's a cool little gadget that'll make your co-worker jealous. This miniature fireplace is actually an elegant oil burning lamp and would be the perfect addition to your desk. And if you work at a place that has a liberal smoking policy, i.e. not in the Western World, you can use it to light up your favorite stogie. Purchase this fireplace at Generate for $349.
We, as humans, have been sucked into the aesthetics of fire since the dawn of man and shit ain't ever gonna change either. Now that we have made some brilliant technological advances over the years, it is now possible to have a fireplace in your livingroom without the need for a proper fireplace or chimney. Planika have created some furniture with built in special fireplaces that use a patened alcohol bio-fuel known as Fanola. It apparently is smokeless and has no known ecological/toxicological side-effects. Amazing! Marshmallows roasting over your coffee table, mmm-mmm.[VIA]
Do you have a smoking problem when you use your fireplace? Here is a list of 10 possible reasons why you are having the smoking problem and what you can do in order to fix the problem and make having that fire a much more enjoyable (and less smoky!) experience!

By: Steven L. SmithHere in the Pacific Northwest where many people burn wood for heat there are many scary and unsafe chimneys and wood burning appliances. I would like to believe that just about anyone could guess that a chimney and wood stove or fireplace will, eventually, require cleaning, maintenance and service. That advice applies to masonry and the assorted metal chimneys. I want to believe that people can figure this out, but that obviously is not the situation. Recently I was witness to a neglected masonry chimney. The black, oozing creosote was an inch thick and caked inside from the top clear down to the homemade, and inefficient, wood stove below. The system was cranking nothing but waste products up the chimney. Creosote is flammable, so it is important to clean and maintain a
By: Christopher BrownThere are many conveniences to both free standing wood stoves and fireplace inserts. The option you select will depend on your current home and whether or not you currently have a fireplace. Free standing wood stoves sit on the floor of a room either on a stand or on four legs. These are placed safely away from the wall, however, many can be placed as close as eight inches to the wall without risk of fire. All new free standing wood stoves are EPA certified and are now clean burning. Older wood stoves were not as clean burning, which could cause air quality issues. These stoves also have relatively high heating efficiencies. There are various styles of free standing wood stoves available, ranging from a traditional, country looking model to a sleek and stylish contempo
Installing a fireplace in a home is a big decision. Installing a fireplace is as difficult as it is necessary to find the right location, ventilation, and safety aspects. With a Plasma TV no matter where you put it, it will always dominate your living room, but now that can be changed with the Award-winning compact Kiara marble plasma TV fireplace.
A TV programme on Discovery Real Time, says: ‘we have designed a new range of smaller designs to meet consumer demand. Designs like the Napoli and Mystic work well in larger rooms, but people were asking for a more compact version. A large black plasma TV tends to dominate a room and make it soulless. The plasma TV fireplace is a revolutionary new concept in home cinema design - a way of disguising the plasma TV as well as having a stylish, fully working fireplace at the same time.’

By: Johnathan Taylor For a beautiful example of a faux stone fireplace, take a look at the work done by skilled artists at Steve Austin Painting, which can be found at http://www.wonderfaux.com/walls10.html . It's hard to believe that this beautiful stone fireplace isn't really stone at all, but paint on top of regular old plaster.Faux painting is not as difficult as you may imagine, and simply requires a little bit of research and practice. The good thing about paint projects is that if you make a huge mistake, you can always cover over the area with some primer and start al over again.A faux stone fireplace technique is quite simple. You really can't do this wrong, as you can always touch up here and there until you're completely satisfied with the effect. And, like I said, worst case scenario: you totally mess things up and have to start all over. No harm done, and you learned a thing or two in the process.Step One:Prepare the surface onto which you will be painting by cleaning
For years, there have been three main types of fireplaces; the traditional, the gas and the electric. In recent years, a new fireplace has brought the same fireplace enjoyment and comfort as the others. Although, the Ventless Gel Fireplace has several advantages. One reason is that the ventless gel fireplace isn't hard to install at all. You won't need to knock any holes in the walls or build any chimneys. Out of the box, it takes no more than forty-five minutes to have a fire roaring in the fireplace. Another thing is that the ventless gel fireplace won't cause any health hazards. The real flames coming out of the fireplace aren't emitting ominous gases that are dangerous to breathe. And major amounts of water vapors aren't emitted into the atmosphere where they settle throughout the structure to create mildews as well as other hazardous fungi. A final reason, safety is a major factor with the ventless gel fireplace. Sparks won't fly out of your fireplace putting your home in da
Those of you who followed our kitchen remodel will be amused to hear that I’ve learned an interesting side effect of household renovations: as soon as you improve one aspect of your home all others look shabby by comparison. Our kitchen was no sooner done than we looked at our fireplace--which could only be described as a monolithic tribute to the 1970s—and knew it had to go.So we started into the whole process again. We ripped out the rock wall, the mammoth oak mantel, the rock-and-tile hearth and even the fireplace itself and installed one of those newfangled gas fireplaces. Moore Heating ran the gas line and installed the fireplace then Artistic Finish did the finish work including our funky new custom maple mantel. You can't see it well in the picture but the mantel is six feet wide and projects outward ten inches in an ellipsis. Now we have flames with the flip of a switch and a way to keep alive should the power ever go out (which isn’t uncommon in the winter here). Brrr… there’s a definite chill radiating up from the floor this morning, but it’s warm enough in here. I set the furnace thermostat to 65 and it didn’t kick on during the night, so the 2 space heaters are doing a great job. I replaced them this year with 2 Pelonis III units, they were much more expensive than the cheaper ones from Lowe’s, but well worth the price. We however, have frost covering the insides of our windows this morning, it’s that cold!Jim removed the fireplace yesterday, but hasn’t installed the new cabinet doors yet. They sent 3 pieces, that for the life of me I can’t figure out what the big piece is for, it just doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. There’s the 2 doors and one other piece.
