In the old days, firefighters were there to help when the call came in. The only thing between them and the fire was a thin helmet and a hose pumping a weak amount of water as compared to the hoses of today.

There has been a lot of talk in the news lately about firefighters saving not only the lives of two-leggers, but their canine pals too!Not too long ago there was a great story in the news about firefighter Stephen "Odie" Odom. The Ouachita Parish firefighter went above and beyond the call of duty, performing CPR on a dog and ultimately saving its life.I'm sure that saving a pups life isn't something they are trained for, but translating their training to help pups is an incredibly admiral thing to do - we salute all the firefighters, trainers and the fire fighting equipment manufacturer, like FireBlast 451, for all chipping in when needed - no matter what.
One night , in a sleepy town a huge chemical plant exploded into flames. The alarm went off and departments from miles around raced to the scene. After fighting the fire for over an hour the chemical company president approached the fire chief, "All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved! I will give $50,000 to the engine company that brings them out safely!"At that, the firemen attacked with a renewed gusto. Two hours later they still had not gained any ground. At that, the company president offered $100,000 to the engine company that brought out the company's secret files. In the distance, the wail of yet another siren was heard and soon another fire truck came into sight. The fire chief shook his head, aware it was that little rinky-dink vol

I’m surprised that Team Bush didn’t think of this one sooner. Well, it looks like firefighters are next in line for a new cooking show. A Boise film crew shot a pilot entitled ‘America’s Firehouse Chefs’ yesterday with firefighters showing their courage in the kitchen. Once the show is edited, it will make the rounds with various networks to see if it can find a home. “It’s ‘America’s Firehouse Chefs’ and that says it all, we want to criss-cross the country highlighting the locations people are in, the kind of firefighting people do at a particular station and then the local cuisine, we want to highlight that,” said Jerry Long, show producer. The pilot is being shot at station number 7 in Boise and they have selected Brian Martin as their first firehouse chef. “I’m somewhat surprised and excited and honored,” said Martin. “Brain’s an excellent cook,” said Dave Hanneman, Boise deputy fire chief. “When he’s cooking, everyone’s thinking about what’s going to be on the plate for dinner.” Martin delighted ever
September 1, 2007- 9:28 pm Goosecreek Rd. just off of 250, A fire broke out in a garage under a house. The cause was a hot weed eater and fumes from gas cans in the garage. There was no one home at the time of the fire, a dog was in the home witch was not harmed. The fire could have been a lot worse, a water line broke witch helped in containing the fire. Fishersvill, Starts Draft, and Augusta co. put out the fire and Waynesboro Rescue assisted. Photo/Story Nathan Combs
They've been called the Green Berets of the wildfire fighting brigade. When flames are chewing up rugged mountain slopes, they helicopter in behind enemy lines with chain saws and flares.Sometimes, after 16 hours of cutting lines through the forest and setting backfires, they'll simply wrap a space blanket around themselves and sleep on the ground before waking up and doing it all over again. For six months straight, 14 days at a time, they go wherever they are needed — Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, or this week, Ventura County. They are the Hotshots."We definitely get to do the cool stuff," said Jamie Miller, a member of the Laguna Hotshots. Her crew was digging a line around the Zaca fire Thursday in a remote northwestern corner of Ventura County. The Laguna team is one of a handful of Hotshot crews called in to do some of the most dangerous, remote frontline work in the Zaca fire. One dark night outside a small town in Alberta, a fire started inside the local sausage plant and in a blink of an eye it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments from miles around. When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the sausage company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved and Il will give $50,000.00 to the fire department thatbrings them out intact." But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer was now $100,000.00 to the fire department who could bring out the company's secret files. From the distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby Mundare Rural Township Volunteer Fire Department, composed mainly of Ukrainian men over the age of 65
Firefighters battled dozens of land-clearing blazes in western Indonesia on Wednesday, officials said, as thick clouds of choking haze spread across parts of the region. Donny Osmon, the head of the local firefighting agency, said farmers and agricultural companies began setting the fires on Sumatra island on Sunday, at the start of the dry season, to clear brush and peat land. Haze from forest fires has become a major problem for large parts of Southeast Asia over the last 10 years and is a source of tension with Malaysia and Singapore, where air quality levels are drastically worsened because of the smoke.

Charleston is a personal city for me. Growing up in upstate South Carolina, I enjoyed trips to what Carolinians often call “The Holy City.” We’d shop at the City Market, and enjoy walking along the Battery where old homes and inns bring history to the forefront. My husband and I spent a week in Charleston on our honeymoon. For many years my brother owned a small place on one of the islands near Charleston. My family spent many summer vacations there. When I read about the nine firefighters who lost their lives Monday, I felt a great sadness wash over me.
My father worked as a firefighter in the Naval Shipyard in Charleston when he was a young man. He was my grandmother’s only son to serve stateside in the war; her two other sons served in the United States Army and were stationed overseas. I still have the buttons from my father’s uniform. He was proud of his service as a young man.
We don’t often stop, on a daily basis, to think about men and women who are willing, for
Fire broke out in a building under construction above the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, the iconic offshore development. One person was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. The construction materials that caught fire created huge dark clouds of smoke. A representative of Nakheel states that the fire broke out at 4pm in a building, currently under construction, owned by a third party developer, on the trunk of Palm Jumeirah. The fire spread within the building, setting fire to construction materials, and producing massive smoke. However, the permanent fire tender of the Palm Jumeirah, reached the scene within minutes, along with required support from Environmental Health and Safety, and the fire service of the Civil Defence. The necessary measures have been undertaken for the safety of public in the island. All workers have been asked for an explanation. The Palm Jumeirah, is one among the three major man-made islands, with Nakheel as its developer. Launched during 2001, it extends 522kms of th
Jeffrey Francis Cullen, a 59 year-old-man of Kingman, shot at firefighters because they refused to go and get the man’s cat out of a tree. He has been sentenced to five months in jail and will also have to be on intensive probation for the next five years.
This sentence was not enough for Lee Jantzen, who was the prosecutor in the case. He said, “The state’s position is that if it’s the first time or the 20th time, prison is appropriate.”
The man called the Hualapai Valley Fire Department and told them that there was a tree on fire, but once the firefighters got there he told them that he just wanted his cat rescued from a tree. The battalion chief told the man to either wait for the cat to come down or to call animal control for help. Apparently this wasn’t the response the man wanted because he went in his house, grabbed a handgun and came out shooting.
Before handing down the sentence, Judge Robert Moon told Cullen, “Firemen, they sh

A pact that would lift the wage freeze for firefighters in return for concessions faces rough sailing after union leaders stood firm Friday in a decision not to put the plan before rank-and-file members for consideration.
A ratification vote will only occur if the control board agrees to change “problematic” language in a resolution the panel approved Wednesday, union leaders said.
“Let the lawyers work it out,” said fire union Vice President Peter Margerum. “But if they can’t come to terms that are satisfactory, it might be over.”
Joe Foley, head of the Buffalo Firefighters Union, refuses to submit the proposed contract to a ratification vote by the members. He claims wording changed in a “whereas” clause, by the Control Board, alters the legal meaning of the original agreement.
City Corporation Counsel Alisa A. Lukasiewicz insisted that wording in the “whereas” section of the resolution is not legally bindi
The head of the Buffalo firefighters union Thursday told the rank and file that they will not be voting on a new five-year contract that was unanimously approved by the city’s control board Wednesday.
President Joseph E. Foley said the union was precluded from submitting the tentative agreement to its membership for ratification later this month because the resolution approved by the control board deviates from the agreement that was reached between the city and Local 282, Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association.
Foley objects to the fact that the Control Board wants the threat of litigation for back wages nullified. The proposed contract calls for a $5,000 raise, followed by subsequent 3.4% increases beginning in a few months. The overall pay increase over the terms of the contract would lead to a 34 - 40% increase for fighters, depending on the pay grade.
It would be fiscally irresponsible to permit the contract to be approved without assurances that furt
Below is an excerpt from today’s Buffalo News describing the proposed contract for Buffalo Firefighters.
Buffalo firefighters would see their salaries increase by more than 30 percent over the next 5½ years under a proposed contract settlement that will be sent to the Common Council and control board for immediate consideration.
In return, negotiators said firefighters would agree to numerous cost-saving concessions, including insurance givebacks, changes in injured-on-duty policies and a rule that all firefighters hired in the future live in the city for their first 15 years on the job.
Mayor Byron W. Brown said the contract will save the city $7.5 million by 2011.

The entry level salary will increase about $6,326, or 18.61% on Feb 1, 2007. The top pay grade will increase about $6736, or 13.19% on Feb 1, 2007. All grades will then receive 5 annual 3.4% increase beginning this year on July 1. The final salaries w
Firefighters are always on high alert, in a state of readiness waiting to respond to an emergency. But with all that spare time, what is there to do to pass the time? Well, the firefighters in Mokdong, particularly Yangcheon-gu, love to play what I have termed, "Solleyball."
That's right...the ultimate sport combining the elements of soccer/football (choose whatever title you see fight) and
(Here is a link to all of the photos I took yesterday.)...how can you not love a firefighter? Is there someone who doesn't? I mean, that's like, illegal or something isn't it? They're always the good guys; rescuing children from burning buildings, pulling frightened kittens out of trees, posing suggestively for calendars...(sigh)Oh. Yeah, so anyway. I was driving today and stopped at an intersection where a dozen or more firefighters were lifting change off motorists in their annual "Fill the Boot for Burns" fund raiser. Naturally I wanted to help, so I waved the kind gentleman nearest me over and then demanded that he flex while I emptied my coin dispenser. It was, after all, for a good cause.Unfortunately for me, stopping at the intersection through four consecutive green lights became a tad ridiculous. I was finally obliged to drive off before I had convinced the young man who came to collect my change to take his shirt off. So as I drove down the road I did what any perfectly s
After clocking Ford's expanded recall for faulty cruise control systems (that could lead to vehicle fires), Florida's St. Petersburg Times asked local firefighters if they'd seen any evidence of Ford F-150s going up in smoke. Indeed they have. Pasco County fire investigator Don Campbell says he started noticing the problem about two years ago. "It's a staggering number now," Campbell said. "It probably averages about one a week in Pasco County." Hillsborough County fire investigator Dave Tucker also said he'd seem a rising number of incidents in recent months: "This has been a long-standing problem." Tucker described fires that burned a hole through the F-150's hood "the size of a basketball." While not exactly a scientific survey, if this pattern is repeated nationwide and receives more of the same sort of local coverage, Ford is facing another Explorer rollover-style PR debacle. Meanwhile, if you could call you local fire de
