      Mistress, Filmmaking is Thy Name
You need me.Only I can fulfill your need to express yourself, to bring those feelings from the bottom of your soul to fruition. You'll obsess about what I can give you, about what only I can satisfy. You're desire to use me is only eclipsed by your desire to enhance me. To make my image more beautiful, and my words more eloquent. You'll give me whatever I want. All of your money will be spent on me. Whatever I desire will be provided by you, and you'll hold nothing back. You'll scrape and dig and discover new ways to pay me what I want to fulfill you. Nothing is too precious to sacrifice. Nothing is too expensive. Nothing is out of reach, because you will get it for me, if I so desire. You'll spend all of your time with me.Sleep means little. You'll stay awake for hours on end to give me what I want, all night long if necessary. Every spare minute will be devoted to me, until your spare minutes will be used solely to sustain your life. I will be preeminent in your thoughts, I will

      Fly Filmmaking
By: Elmo Kandel Fly Filmmaking is closely related to Guerilla Filmmaking. The latter is done literally with all that there is on hand and in the shortest amount of time possible. Spike Lee did this with his film "She's Gotta Have it" and he has received continuing critical acclaim for his first effort. Fly Filmmaking is very similar and was conceived by the organizers of the Seattle International Film Festival. The name literally refers to filmmaking on the fly and this is a challenge done every year for about the last 10 years. This is done to showcase the filmmaking community in the Seattle area.It consists of 3 separate teams that are given all that they need to make a film and a time frame of about 10 days. In this time they have to conceive of and create a film. The run time of the films is anywhere from 5 minutes to 22 minutes. The judges view the ending result and announce the winner at the festival. The arrangements and actual work are done about 3 weeks before the festival sta

      Simplify Your Filmmaking Life
I just read a post over at Zen Habits that outlines Ten Things You Can Do Today To Simplify Your Life, and was inspired. Filmmaking is a long, tough process and would be so much more enjoyable if much of the fat could be trimmed from the process. The following list is just a few ideas I had that might help us all to streamline our workload, make us more efficient, and better serve our creative creature. Less time being frustrated means more time in a positive, thought-provoking place.Shoot TapelessI hate capturing and logging tape, and I think most others do as well. It's time consuming, it's boring, and nothing is worse than a hiccup on some captured shot that forces you to do the whole stupid process over again. Cameras exist right now that let you shoot video that is recorded directly to a file, eliminating the whole hassle. My favorite of these are cams that record to cheap SD cards, like the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2. It's very portable, it shoots in HD, has many manual features (inc

      Adversity and the Filmmaking Process
I recently received an email from fellow filmmaker and blogger Josh Johnson over at Carolina Flicks. Upon reading the mail the message became clear--I had been blog tagged! Josh was passing on a similar challenge he had been given by Adversity University (where you can do this as well). I picked up the gauntlet and here I am! This is definitely a worthwhile topic that really pertains to the movie making world, high, low, or no budget. As anyone who has ever done it will tell you, filmmaking is a tough choice for artistic expression. Unlike a painter who can start by just picking up a brush, or an author who can begin pecking away at a keyboard, creating a film not only involves you, but many others, and takes a long time to finish.I have wondered if the Fox reality show On the Lot will be a success because of this. When people watch American Idol, they can visualize themselves on that stage, because everyone can sing a little, promoting this delusion (remember William Hung?). Not many p

      Don't Be a Filmmaking Tool--Use Them!
There is always some nifty gadget popping up on the web that I think I would need someday. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing something cool, deciding to pass, then needing it soon thereafter. It seems to happen on every shoot I go on, so I peruse several tool blogs looking for goodies that may come in handy. Many times I'll find stuff that may not be intended for filmmakers, but that apply
