      Science Fiction Weapon Comes True
The Stilleto is a weapon featured in Clarkes science fiction novel Earthlight. In the 1955 Clarke novel, the weapon is said to emit a beam of light that was able to pierce a spacecraft. The writer afterwards explains that the weapon he mentioned in his novel was actually a stream of liquefied metal that gets shot through space with very high speed and force. The research and development arm of the Department of Defense (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency or DARPA) is developing a weapon called MAHEM. This is patterned after Clarkes fictional weapon. MAHEM stands for Magneto Hydrodynamic Explosive Munition. The weapon will be using magnetism to propel either liquid or solid metal. It will be similar to other currently existing weapons since it will use explosions and electromagnetism t

      Fan Fiction Update
It looks like it's about time to put up another chapter of my ongoing Bone-based fan fiction. The Chronicles of Fone Bone OathbreakerChapter 4: BirthIn this chapter, the ominous foreshadowings of chapter 3 bear fruit: dark events occur in Atheia and Boneville, hinting at forthcoming bloodshed, and shocking secrets are revealed that stretch continuity with the comic books to the breaking point. But who cares about that stuff? What's really important is that this chapter at last introduces the cute school teacher! (Don't even get me started on cute school teachers.) I originally threw in this character because I wanted to see if I could paint a relationship similar to the one between Fone Bone and Thorn, but with the genders reversed. However, in chapters 5 through 9, I found myself writing th

      InsideCatholic: Where My Fiction At?
This post leads in nicely to tomorrow's planned essay:Tod M. Aglialoro at InsideCatholic has asked the question, where has all the explicitly Catholic fiction gone? Being inclined to dislike explicitly Christian fiction written for an explicitly Christian audience, I am tempted to reply that I hope it has died a peaceful and permanent death, but that's not really right; once upon a time, it was not unusual for explicitly Catholic works to appeal to larger audiences, and besides that, some of the greatest works ever written are explicitly Christian. It is an interesting article, and I suggest reading it. My only quibble is with his description of Christian readers "straining every sinew to force a Christian hermeneutic" on Harry Potter. I'll reply by noting that anyone who's read the entire

      Fact or Fiction?
I have been reading up on the numerous "medblogs" that litter the "internets." I am intrigued by the fact that there is this whole genre of blogs that are out there that go mostly unnoticed by the general public. A person could spend all day reading and still not catch up on all the new posts. It's like trying to fit the smithsonian into one day. As I read these blogs from people from all facets of the medical field I am reminded of the fact that I have a long way to go. I started obsessing over the fact that medical school applicant numbers increase from year to year, and it is getting more and more competitive to gain entrance into medical school. Of course this is all anecdotal from pre-meds who are trying to scare the shit out of each other while listening to a lecture on fisher proje

This is the gooey chapter, but after this come six chapters that are gooey in a different sort of way. Originally, chapter 3 came with a warning at the beginning. I've removed it from this edition, but I'll reprint it here:In the afterword to his famous play, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, Friedrich Dürrenmatt explains the slapstick humor in an awkward seduction scene by saying he wanted to spare the audience the embarrassment felt by the characters. I, however, wish to spare neither audience nor characters, so I must apologize for this chapter ahead of time. Bear with m

Fortunately, that's why God created blog tours. This month's Christian sf tour goes out to The Begotten, book 1 of The Gifted, by Lisa T. Bergren, whose official website is here. Once again, I regret not having read the book for the tour, and I feel it especially deeply this time: the book is set in Medieval Italy and involves the surfacing of some previously unknown writings by a biblical author as well as the appearance of people with superpowers. Appears to be getting excellent reviews. I especially regret having not read it as some reviews indicate it takes a decidedly anti-Catholic stance (a

Fine, I'll accept that: it's fiction, a ridiculous premise, but it sounds quite fun. A strange alternate history. What still bugs me is that the mammoths gallop at speeds of upwards of 60 kilometres per hour. What?! No Relationship Between Bonsai Kitten And Bonsai Trees. Bonsai Cats - Just Fiction
The bonsaikitten.com scandal. Raising bonsai cats is just a joke; bonsai trees are reality and an Art. The depictions and pictures on raising bonsai cats on the website bonsaikitten.com are obviously just jokes; Nature cannot be forced to impossibilities. Basically the articles on the website talk about little kittens put in an angular shaped glass, and after a time the kittens grow up into bonsai cats of angular shape. The website details the technological process, illustrated with manipulated texts and pictures. All what we see there is false, just a nightmare of a sick mind. Animal protecting organizations and people passionately protest against this website, but even FBI cannot do anything, the website still has been existing. The American student who has created it under a false name

      Non-fiction publishing tips
Advice on getting a non-fiction book published By Tamara Wilhite You've spent years working on a non-fiction book. It's finally done. Who can get it onto the press and into print? Here are few tips on what to do and where to go. Find out if your alma mater has a university press. (Many do.) These academic presses have a preference for publishing academic books, as well as a preference for publishing alumni. Also, being non-profit, they can be cheaper than for-profit publishers if you use them to self-publish. Join a historical or interest based society of the area in which the book is written. Those in that field will know which publishers are publishing books on the topic, who isn’t, what agents are in that field, and perhaps even link you up

Science-fiction legend Arthur C Clarke dies aged 90
March 19 - Arthur C Clarke, the writer best known for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, has died at the age of 90. He passed away in his home in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo because of cardio-respiratory problems, a statement said. He had been wheelchair-bound because of post polio syndrome for the last 20 years of his life.Clarke celebrated his 90th birthday in December, when he said he wanted to be remembered as a writer "who entertained readers and hopefully stretched their imaginations as well".The plot for 2001: A Space Odyssey, which takes readers from the dawn of man to the rebirth of an astronaut as a star child in the future, certainly reflected that goal. His story was turned into an enormously successful 1968 Stanley Kubrick film of the same title and publicised his work to m

      More on Fan Fiction
To continue our exploration of the question of fan fiction, which is, curiously, occupying a prominent place in our fiction-free Lent, I absolutely must refer you to the engaging article, "Legal Fictions: Copyright, Fan Fiction, and a New Common Law" by Rebecca Tushnet, who makes a compelling case (at least to me, a non-lawyer) that fan fiction, apparently more legally murky than I previously believed, might fall under the category of fair use as long as it's noncommercial. If you love fan fiction, or if you write it, this is definitely an article to read. I can't put it down, and that's something I never would have thought I'd say about an article on copyright law. It's a testament, I suppose, to Tushnet's writing skill; I hope she puts that to good use and produces some great fan fiction.

The Catholic Church's support for the death penalty, under certain circumstances, can be found right in the pages of the Catechism of the Catholic church.2267 Assuming that the guilty party's identity andresponsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of theChurch does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the onlypossible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people'ssafety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as theseare more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and are morein conformity to the dignity of the human person.

Repost - L.A. Times: Why would author label fiction as fact?
Thanks to Perez Hilton for the photo annotation inspiration ;)I'm fatigued at this point. Seltzer's lies are so huge that the payoff of paying anymore attention to it is close to nil. However, I got this from Kate over at FishBowlLA. It's written by Sandy Banks, who has a weekly column in the L.A. Times. I think she sums it up well. Why would author label fiction as fact? Why should it take a white author's "gripping memoir" to cast the problems of ghetto blacks in a sympathetic light? March 8, 2008 I cringed as I read the book jacket blurb calling the recently unmasked fake memoir "an unvarnished look at inner-city life beyond the statistics and stereotypes." On the back cover were tributes to the author's "pitiless intelligence and scathing honesty." "Margaret Jones uses her

Review: The Measure (SA) - Historical Fiction
Originally released back in 2005 on vinyl only, The Measure (SA) in conjunction with Team Science Records re-released their album Historical Fiction on CD last year. This Brunswick, New Jersey quartet serves up DIY-spirited jangly pop-punk that has just a hint of Americana flavor. The band also features both male and female lead vocals courtesy of guitarists Mike Regrets and Lauren Measure whose sloppy (but lovable) vocals and messy ramshackle guitars are simply irresistible. Historical Fiction is the audio equivalent of walking along the boardwalk with some cotton candy and a hot dog as saltwater breeze washes over you and whomever you're holding hands with. It could come from nowhere else but Jersey. More recently (however) The Measure (SA) has gone through a few lineup changes but

      Fan Fiction...Is It Wrong?
Frequent readers know we have brought up the question of fan fiction before on this blog. You can read some previous comments here and here. Recently, the blog It's All Straw posted links to some articles on the web about the legality of fan fiction. Also, Niall Mor, proprietor of the blog, links his own fan fiction piece. The links start with an article at FindLaw, where Julie Hilden argues that original works must be protected so that authors can get their money. I imagine very few people would argue with that, even ones who favor fan fiction and fan art. Personally, I think fanworks should be considered fair use as long as they are noncommercial. That brings us to the blog 43(B)log where Rebecca Tushnet responds to Julie Hilden's article. What I find most interesting is this claim: "Nonco

      Studying Science Fiction Politics: Perhaps
I'm considering doing an independent study course next quarter. My reasoning is this: I already have to take one course that is required that I really don't care about and since the number of modern literature courses offered (seeing how I'm a modern lit major) are rather crappy, I don't want to have to take three courses that I hate. So I've resolved to considering independent study as an option to do something interesting.    I don't want to discuss race because, quite frankly, I'm not that interested in any subject of race within science fiction beyond tropes of racism and the data I'm collecting for the project I'm working on for this blog (which serves no academic purpose other than to educate myself and anyone else interested on what minority categories look li

Coffee Addiction - Fact or Fiction?
Let's get straight to the point. Coffee can appear to be addictive because of the withdrawal symptoms it produces. As soon as the caffeine hits your brain it tells your adrenal glands to produce adrenalin, this is where the kick comes from. Adrenalin gets you ready for action, the problem is that if you are sat at your desk, or perhaps on the couch, you don't need to be ready for action. About 30 minutes later the caffeine wears off, the adrenalin has worn off, and you come down from this action state, leaving you feeling tired and unable to relax. So what do you do now? Most people decide to reach for another cup of coffee to end this sluggishness and the cycle is repeated all through the day, with you going from high to low, an emotional roller coaster of a day. If this sounds familiar you

An Example of Jewish Fiction Writing in Antiquity
Question:  If the Gospels are literary fictions, can you give us any other examples of a fictitious narrative written by Hellenized Jews to reflect reinterpretation of scripture with Greek influence?   Atheist Answer   ANSWER FROM ROOK HAWKINS: Yes. There are quite a few examples I could give, but because I’m short on time because my book demands so much from me, I’ll use the most simple example with the most groupings I can list without having to go into a whole lot of details. The book of Tobit. Tobit is, for lack of a better way to put it, edifying fictions. The story uses very specific literary motifs and tropes, as well as Greek folklore (the dangerous bride, the greatful dead, etc…). Nothing in this story is meant to be taken as historical narrative.
