A jury decided that Lisa Montgomery, who was convicted of not only murdering a pregnant woman, but also cutting the baby out of the woman’s womb, should receive the death penalty. Prosecutors said that it will be up to a judge to give Montgomery the sentence, but that he is obligated to take the jury’s recommendation.
Montgomery, who is 39-years-old, kidnapped and killed Bobbie Jo Stinnett in Missouri at the victim’s home on December 16, 2004. She then cut the baby out of the womb and took off with it. Police arrested her the next day in Kansas, where she was showing off the baby as if it were hers.
Prosecutors told the jurors that what Montgomery did to Stinnett was done in the “most wicked way possible,” and that she failed to try and get medical attention to the baby. They said that a murder of this kind should result in capital punishment.
