From: Rise and Fall of Nations by Ben J. Wattenberg I think the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the most meaningful way of measuring what is going on demographically. It reflects the average total number of children born per woman over the course of her childbearing years. It takes 2.1 children per woman to "replace" a population over time. Sooner or later the two parents die--and the .1 repre

Endometriosis ???
This is a gynecological condition affecting around 10 – 15% of all the female population.
This is a condition in which the lining of the womb ( the endometrium ) implants and grows outside the womb, usually on the pelvis, ovaries, fallopian tubes,or bladder.
Endometriosis is more common in childless woman over the age of [...]
Everyone is aware of a good diet’s affect upon energy and health. Men and women feel better, are more energetic, and yes, more fertile when eating foods that are nutritious and vitamin packed. Certain foods (and drinks) are detrimental to viable sperm production in men and ovulation in women, so attention to particularly [...]
My grandmother has eight children, my mom has the three of us whereas I have a daughter. Grandma tells me she was never aware of what is infertility until I got married; my mom never heard of any friend or close relative suffering from infertility except one of my aunts whereas I have 4 close friends suffering from infertility. Though these may seem like simple statements, they have a hidden message which needs to be explored.
Infertility- Its growing abruptly and ruthlessly as generations are advancing!
What is infertility? Infertility is the condition when a couple is not able to give rise to a new being, their child. The reasons could be many. Prolonged use of medications, stress, pollutants, obstruction in the uterus(in form of polyp, fibroids etc.), poor sperm motility or poor concent

Infertility can be a difficult problem to treat, and modern interventions — while sometimes effective — can be expensive. So, it’s not surprising that some people look to herbs and supplements as a possible alternative treatment to this vexing problem. Unfortunately, the research on so-called fertility herbs and supplements is scant.
For male infertility, one study [...]
I think the most important couple’s dream is to have a baby, but is a reality that some of them have infertility problems and this can be very traumatic situation for them. As you know infertility is abnormal situation of the reproductive system which a woman or a man are incapable to conceive a baby. [...]

Fertility problems have been improved or solved with herbs for thousand of years. Herbalists, Native Americans and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine use herbs to increase fertility and improve the function of both the male and female reproductive system. With the fear of the side effects of drugs many couples turn to more natural fertility treatments to improve their fertility problems. About 15% of couples experience some difficulty in becoming pregnant and many prefer to try more natural methods to increase fertility before resorting to stressful procedures like IVF. In fact studies using fertility herbs have indicated that the success rate of using herbs lies between 50% - 90% depending on the type of infertility treated. Infertility is a complex subject and there can be ma

Long-term use of the cancer pill Gleevec (imatinib) may produce fertility problems in women.
Greek physicians reported that a 30-year-old woman with chronic myeloid leukemia stopped menstruating after two years of taking Gleevec. Ultrasound revealed that the number of eggs in her ovaries was greatly reduced.
In 2004, a man also developed fertility problems while on the drug.
In traditional Chinese medicine, Dodder or Cuscuta seeds were generally used as an aphrodisiac and as treatment to most uro-genital disorders. Similarly, in western herbalism, the species Cuscuta epithymum is most commonly used in healing.Cuscuta is the name of a group of plants in the morning glory family. Cuscuta is more often called "dodder" in English-speaking countries; and its species are found almost everywhere in the world. Other names include hellweed, devil's gut, beggarweed, strangle tare, scaldweed, dodder of thyme, greater dodder, and lesser dodder. Cuscuta seeds are called Tu Si Zi in Chinese. These seeds are from the species Cuscuta Japonica (although some refer to it more as Cuscuta Chinensis).Despite being considered as a destructive weed by western agriculturists, some we

I am going to continue with the response to questions for a bit more. This time I will start with the most recent and work backwards. Here I will address the SCSA question. I will continue to get to the other questions as the blogs roll out.
The SCSA: I do not order this test. Maybe someday I will, but I need more science. When a new test comes out (I know it s been out for years, but it s relatively new and not universally performed), there are a few reasons that it becomes popular.
One is that it is a great test and can really distinguish between who is fertile and who is not. Another reason is that some company is making tons of dough and can afford to spend a lot of money convincing your doctor this is a must do test. Another is that some doctors do some quick and dirty research,
I have not answered questions since October, so here we go.
Because it s been a while, sorry if my answers are a little late for those asking, but I hope other readers will have the same questions and learn from the dialogue.
A woman wrote in frantically about her new experiences using Clomid. In fact she was do distraught, she was really concerned about getting pregnant with her second child even though she was not yet pregnant with her first. Yes Clomid can make you extremely emotional, but no one should really be over the edge. If you feel like this woman, get counseling (which more people really should do) or get off Clomid, or both.
Antral follicle counts are only a guide. If you have a total of 11, you don t really know how the cycle will work out. 11 is a very adequate number
Fertility problems are twice as common as previously thought. A recent study found that 36% of couples with fertility problems have a least 3 sessions of IVF costing up to £8,000 a time but less than half these treatments result in pregnancy. It is a great shame that more information is not given to these couples about natural remedies for pregnancy and treatments for infertility. Natural Herbal Remedies have been used for thousands of years to help balance a woman's hormones to increase fertility.Advances in hormone testing that plots a woman's sex hormones every 3 - 4 days over one monthly cycle can pick up problems with hormone balance that the routine tests do not. Estrogen dominance and the sudden drop of progesterone at the end of a cycle are common causes of infertility or the inabi
A stark difference between the United States and Europe. For the first time in 35 years, the U.S. fertility rate has climbed high enough to sustain a stable population, solidifying the nation's unique status among industrialized countries. The overall fertility rate increased 2 percent between 2005 and 2006, nudging the average number of babies being born to each woman to 2.1, according to the latest federal statistics. That marks the first time since 1971 that the rate has reached a crucial benchmark of population growth: the ability of each generation to replace itself."It's been quite a long time since we've had a rate this high," said Stephanie J. Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics. "It's a milestone."Of course, if you are the sort of person who creams in their jeans at the sight of Mother Earth, the American fertility rate is a disaster. More people mean more waste products, less "green spaces", and more problems. In short: in the world of the such environmental
As many couples know, becoming pregnant is not simply a matter of having intercourse near a selected date. Fewer than two-thirds of couples trying to conceive succeed within six months. Fortunately, 90% of women trying to get pregnant do so within 18 months. There are dozens of factors that affect the odds of conception, some more important than others.Caffeine intake does affect fertility for both men and women. Brewed coffee has between 100-300 mg of caffeine, while cappucino has between 300-400 mg and decaf (not surprisingly) has only 1-8 mg. Those concerned that caffeine might be an issue should limit themselves to no more than two cups per day.Conditions in both men and women are about equally likely to be the reason pregnancy doesn't occur.A small percentage of men have low sperm motility, a condition in which sperm cells don't actively move enough to make the trip up to the egg. Caffeine or excessive alcohol consumption can have some small effect on this, but in general the con
In order to become pregnant, a woman should know when the ovulation process takes place in the body.

As I walked from the elevator at my usual 7:00 am, I glanced through the waiting room and something caught my eye: a pregnant woman on the cover of Newsweek captioned by Fertility and Diet. Oh no, I said to myself. Here come about at million questions! So I figured I would read the article and take the time here to go through some things; beat you to the punch.
According to the article, diet the recommendations are aimed at preventing and reversing ovulatory infertility. This goes back to my blogs on PCOS. Therefore if you already ovulate regularly, the diet issue does not apply to you.
It appears that women with better diets had more regular ovulation. Brilliant. Lets start with carbs. The article shows that carbs are fine, but women who ate more healthy carbs , such as brown rice, pasta and dark bread, whole grains, beans and vegetables, and whole fruit, ovulated more than those who loaded up on white rice and potatoes. Sounds familiar. For any medical

Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease that affects millions of women worldwide.
It occurs when endometrial tissue, the lining of the uterus, grows outside the uterus (womb) and connects to the organs of the pelvic or abdominal cavities (ovaries, fallopian tubes, or urinary bladder) where it is not supposed to grow.

A gene long linked to suppressing the growth of cancer may also play a vital role in human reproduction, researchers report. In experiments with mice, researchers found that females lacking the p53 gene had fewer embryos implanted in the uterus, less chance of becoming pregnant, and when they did conceive, they had fewer offspring. A lack of p53 did not affect the fertility of male mice, however."This is an amazing new function for a gene that everybody thought they knew what it did," said lead researcher Arnold J. Levine, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, N.J. "This is a gene that is not only watching over us so that we cannot get cancer, but it watches over our genome so that we can develop normally," he added. The report appears in the Nov. 29 issue of Nature. The p53 gene responds to a variety of stresses, such as radiation damage, in ways that allow it to protect cells against cancer, Levine explained. However, he added, "We found, quite by surprise, the
Studies have shown that women who consume alcohol at any rate can struggle with infertility during their lives. Sometimes it could cause a woman who is trying to get pregnant to suffer from miscarriages, never having a successful pregnancy. Often times if the woman does carry on throughout the pregnancy, many complications can occur during childbirth and after, affecting the baby and the mother. (more…)
The questions was: is it necessary to take progesterone if you are doing clomid or FSH injections with iui? The answer is that you may not need progesterone for these cycles because the ovary can do a great job of producing high levels of progesterone. The corpus luteum is not disturbed by an IVF needle. Also, we usually do not give lupron or antagon or cetritide for an IUI cycle. Personally, I usually do not give progesterone for IUI, but I will in some select cases. Some doctors give progesterone because of the high estrogen levels produced by the fertility drugs. They feel that if the estrogen is high, the progesterone needs to be high too. This is a theoretical concept and has not been shown to be valid for women on fertility drugs. Certainly if the period is coming early after the iui, progesterone should be considered.

On my mind at present, when this current light AF will end (I'm on Day 10), and is it still considered the last of the miscarriage or if it does count as the start of a new cycle.Hopefully, my body has not forgotten how to get back in gear.... it HAS been 6 months since my last cycle. And, of course, the topic of medical insurance and how much I'm going to have to ante up that insurance won't pay for. For all of my readers/friends who have BTDT, I will probably have some questions for you all when I get there. I get the feeling that my RE's

When trying to get pregnant, many times we can fail to conceive because our diets are lacking in the nutrients necessary for a successful conception and pregnancy to take place. Even when we are very careful about our diet and “eat well”, our diet can still be insufficient.
When trying to get pregnant your main objective should be is to try and create the healthiest eggs and sperm possible, and in the woman, the most fertile environment possible so conception can occur.
Often, with many couples, an ordinary diet lacks the necessary nutrients a healthy pregnancy requires. The body knows this, and until the nutrient levels are there, doesn’t conceive.
So in order for the body to receive the nutrients it needs to conceive nutritional supplements are often required to supplement even the best most carefully planned diets.
There are a wealth of supplements available. A short stroll through you local supermarket or health food store reveals an array of choices; Fertility Supplement,
Although these are all natural fertility boosters, please check with your doctor before trying any herbal supplements or beginning an exercise routine.
1. Stop smoking - Smoking damages eggs, reducing the chances of getting pregnant during any given cycle, and smokers may hit menopause several years earlier than their non-smoking peers. Smoking also negatively impacts hormone levels, further reducing fertility.
2. Limit caffeine consumption - Several studies have shown reduced fertility for women who consume more than 300 mg of caffeine each day. Fortunately, the threshold is high enough that you can still indulge in that morning cup o’ joe, since the average 8-ounce cup of coffee only has 100 to 130 mg of caffeine. Don’t forget, though, that black tea, green tea, chocolate, and some sodas also contain caffeine.
3. Get to a healthy weight - Obesity can inhibit ovulation and wreak havoc with hormones. It also puts women at risk for a variety of health problems (such as diabetes, hea

Fertility WindowI just had to take the time to share a recent email conversation I have had the pleasure of having with one of my newsletter subscribers. She is a precious lady with 2 children already, but she and her husband were wanting to have another child. While conception is designed to be one of the most pleasant and simple concepts of the human (or any) species, it is becoming more and more prevalent for couples to be experiencing difficulties in this department. Before attempting expensive and time consuming procedures, such as artificial insemination or oocyte micromanipulation, consider first trying an approach that is both simple and free.
It’s true, sexual positions can influence fertility rate. The basis behind this claim is that the closer the semen ends up to the cervix during ejaculation, the higher the chance of fertilization and conception. Some sexual positions are just better at delivering the goods than others.
Let’s take a look at some of the positions as well as their pros and cons:
Missionary position: The pro of this position is that the semen ends up closer to the cervix. The con is that it makes it harder for the female to orgasm, thus depriving th
"How to Calculate Your Window of Fertility" A typical menstrual cycle is 28 days long, with menstruationoccurring on day 1. The day of ovulation, which normally occurs12 to 16 days before the menstrual period begins, and the fivedays preceding ovulation are a woman's most fertile time. So, forthe average woman, the most fertile window of time is betweendays 10 and 17 of the menstrual cycle. Problem - Most Women aren't Average Since most women aren't average, it is necessary for you topinpoint your own individual fertility window. One way to do thisis to keep a record of your menstrual cycle for eight or moremonths, if possible. Then select your shortest cycle and subtract18 from it. The resulting number is your first potentiallyfertile day. Then subtract 11 from your longest cycle. Theresulting number marks your last potentially fertile day. So, forexample, let's assume that your cycles range from 27 days to 30days over the time you recorded them. In this case, your firstpotentiall
For years, doctors have warned men having trouble conceiving to stay away from hot baths and whirlpool tubs, saying there was reason to suspect that long exposure to hot water could worsen their problems.
Much of that was based on speculation. But earlier this year, a team of urologists at the University of California, San Francisco, conducted a study to measure and document the extent, if any, of this effect. The researchers did confirm the link, and then they discovered something surprising.

Fertility Monitoring Mobile Phone Samsung Files Patent Application: Free Calls, SMSTalk about convergence. These days, mobile phones wear a variety of different hats - phone, music player, email client, camera, gaming device, calendar, etc. (you get the picture). This “convergence” of technology is the future for mobile phones. Now it seems there’s another feature to include into our mobile phones - a fertility monitor. If Samsung gets their way, we may just see future handsets from the South Korean handset manufacturer sporting a fertility monitor. The technology would measure a woman’s basal body temperature (resting body temp.) and distance to her eardrum to determine when she is most fertile. From the documentation:when the woman’s menstruation period is set between 28 to 30 days, the days may be divided into a low temperature period and a high temperature period, based on the ovulation day. In this instance, the low temperature day indicates around about 14 days from a fir
Bone marrow transplantation restored reproductive capability to female mice that had undergone fertility-destroying chemotherapy, according to a study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.More research is needed to determine how a bone marrow transplant restores fertility in the mice, said the authors of the study, which was published in the Aug. 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The researchers noted that donor-derived egg cells (oocytes) were detected in the ovaries of the marrow recipients, but all the pups born were from the recipients' own eggs."Consistent with our past work, cells derived from the donor bone marrow are getting into the ovaries and developing into immature oocytes," senior author Jonathan Tilly, director of the Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology at the hospital, said in a prepared statement. The oocyte is the precursor to the mature ovum (egg)."Although these oocytes derived from marrow cells don't appear competent, at least
The first at-home fertility screening test for men and women went on sale in the United States on Monday. The test, called Fertell, allows couples to assess key elements of both male and female fertility with 95 percent accuracy, according to maker Genosis, Inc. The test can be purchased over-the-counter at CVS, Longs drug stores, as well as online, the company said. The male portion of the test measures the concentration of motile sperm, a key indicator of sperm health. Results are available within 80 minutes. The female portion checks follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels in a woman's urine on the third day of her menstrual cycle.FSH is a key indicator of ovarian reserve, a measure of the age of a woman's ovaries and their ability to respond to FSH in order to produce eggs that can be fertilised, Genosis said. The results of the female test can be available in 30 minutes. – (HealthDayNews)
A previously sterile Belgian woman has successfully received ovarian tissue from her sister in an advance that could offer hope to women with cancer and other women unsuited to normal in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, scientists said. Teresa Alvaro, 37, whose ovaries failed after treatment for cancer, now has restored ovarian function following the transplant operation in February last year. Good opportunity for those who have cancer therapyJacques Donnez, a professor of gynaecology at the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels, said it was too early to draw firm conclusions but the procedure gave hope to women who had not had an opportunity to freeze either eggs or ovarian tissue before undergoing damaging cancer therapy. "This method is an option for women who have not had their ovarian tissue cryopreserved (frozen)," Donnez said on Thursday. The procedure could be used between two unrelated women, as long as they had compatible tissue types and had swapped bone marrow, h
A bowl of tomato soup per day can boost fertility among men by seven to 12 percent, scientists claim.
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth studied the effects of lycopene by asking six healthy men to consume a 400 gram can of Heinz cream of tomato soup every day for two weeks.
During the two weeks, the lycopene levels in the men’s semen rose significantly. They are considering further studies to see if lycopene might have the same effect on infertile men.
So far, it’s not known what part lycopene plays in fertility, but it’s been suggested that the antioxidant may remove free radicals that have a negative impact on sperm.
Lycopene has been identified as being beneficial for a wide variety of health conditions, from exercise-induced asthma to prostate cancer. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated it has found no evidence to back up the claim that lycopene has any benefit as a cancer prevention.

Toxins in our environment -- in our food, air, water, toiletries and homes -- are slowly but surely invading our bodies and wreaking havoc. Among the many delicate systems that are being harmed by environmental chemicals is the reproductive system, and our very fertility may be at stake.Only about 5 percent of all the chemicals used in the United States have ever been tested to see how they impact the human reproductive system, so know one knows for sure the extent of the damage. What is known is that low levels of toxins can produce serious effects, not only in your own children but also in your future grandchildren’s children. Some of the toxins that are known to affect fertility include:Methoxychlor (MCX): A common pesticide that reduces the ability of the uterus to support embryo implantation.Kepone, DBCP and ethylene dibromide: Pesticides that have been found to reduce sperm counts.MSG: A food additive that’s been linked to reduced fertility.Phthalates: Chemicals used in toile
There has been always a relation between the thyroid gland and the infertility. It affects both the genders but especially the women are affected the most. There is an association between underactive thyroid and the sterility in women. Lower levels of hormones of thyroid can interfere with the ovulation. This will impair the fertility. Adding to this, there are some underlying causes of hypothyroidism like certain autoimmune or pituitary disorder may impair the fertility especially in women.
Treating underactive thyroid is one of the major aspects to correct the infertility. However, hypothyroidism may cause the infertility; the treatment of hypothyroidism by using thyroid hormone supplement may not fully restore fertility. There should be some interventions those are to be needed to treat infertility even though hypothyroidism is treated well. It is seen many times that a person especially a lady who is having hypothyroidism, often thinks about the complication in her pregnancy and s
There is strong relation between hypothyroidism and fertility. Hypothyroidism is the condition in which, the thyroid gland produces less thyroid hormones. In other words, there is inadequacy of thyroid hormones in the body so the body is unable to perform the metabolism in its normal manner as the metabolism process requires good quality and quantity of thyroid hormones.
On the other hand, fertility is the capacity to produce a baby or a child. There are plenty of reasons that affect fertility and hypothyroidism is one of the common causes. In the condition where the thyroid gland is underactive, the hormonal level gets disturbed in the body. Hypothyroidism can affect fertility in both the genders; males and females.
However, the fertility is affected more in women as compare to the men. There is very strong association between hypothyroidism and sterility in women. It is seen that decreased thyroid hormonal level can disturb the ovulation in female and any disturbance in ovulation wi
The current situation has been taking up a lot of brain and blog space. This weekend was pretty relaxing, consisting of a lot of doing "nothing".Which is nice.I putzed around my Target store, bought a couple of needless items that were on the dollar rack. (is it me this year or was the Target Summer 'seasonal' section underwhelming?)I also took the opportunity to go to the Coach store for the VIP event, and I got a new purse (and wallet) 25% off!You can't beat that with a stick.I am going on record to say that this summer is going to be crazy. I have a bazillion social commimtments (something going on each Sat. or Sun.) every weekend through the end of August. The thing that bums me out is there always seems to be conflicts. So although it's nice to be social, it sucks when you RSVP to something and then get another invite for the same day. I hate to miss out on people and fun.And on the fertility front, my pregnant self is still here. I went for another beta this morning, a
I was at the Obando Fertility Rites last May 17. A three-day fiesta honoring the towns patron saints: May 17 for St. Paschal, May 18 for St. Claire and May 19 for the Our Lady of Salambao, this festival in Obando has attracted couples praying for children among others. It was a pleasant early morning drive to Obando via the old town center of Polo (Valenzuela City). This northwestern part of Metro Manila was foreign to me until today. I heard there were a lot of heritage structures in Malabon but I will have to reserve exploring the said town for another day.The participants to the fertility dance during the three morning processions are dayo (visitors) from other towns in the Philippines. Most ask the patron saints for a son or a daughter, a husband or a wife or good fortune. They believe that by dancing, the spirit of life to enters into the wombs of women. My host for today was Dir. Ting de los Reyes of the DOT who is from Obando. It was a good thing the procession passed by his house
For those women and couples who are very concerned about their biological clock, there is the option of egg freezing. I always thought it was very sci-fi and not an option for right now. However, it turns out that many women are opting for it and it may be a viable option. Here is an interesting article from the Boston Globe about how women are freezing their eggs so that they can have babies later in life and the risks associated with it. It is an odd thing that in the UK we have Easter but in most of Europe this time in the Christian calendar is called Pascha (or some variant based on that word). Germany has das Ostern which is similar in sound and origin to Easter. In Anglo-Saxon times the people celebrated the Spring, the coming back to life of the Earth. They celebrated Eostr, a fertility goddess. Makes a lot of sense really. You live by what you can grow and collect, and there right in front of you the Earth is coming back to life. The Early Church thought that this theme of resurrection was a handy one to jump on the back of, and so the celebration got slightly hijacked to be about some guy way off in the East coming back to life.Somewhere along the way we also got Easter Eggs, and Easter Bunnies. Its quite odd how the highpoint of the Christian religious calendar is so full of odd associations in the UK.... and then you've got wonder about the names of the days of the week too.How did the names of the old god
THE MALE GENITAL SYSTEM Spermatozoa are generated by the seminiferous tubules of the testes, traverse through, and are further matured in the epididymes and subsequently transported through the vas deferens and ejaculated out through the urethra. Seminal fluid is produced predominantly by the seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands. THE TESTES Oval-shaped, averaging 5x3x2cm in the three diameters. Weighs about 12gm and consists of approximately 250 lobes. Each lobe contains a seminiferous tubule of about 50cm in length with a diameter of about 0.25mm. Total tubular length per testis is about 125m. Daily sperm output by the testes equals approximately 45-280 million spermatozoa. The testis is an endocrine organ consisting of Leydig cells found between the seminiferous tubules, which are lined by Sertoli cells between which the germ cells are located. Blood and lymph vessels traverse between the seminiferous tubules. Many subdivisions occur in the evol

This pisses me off. In fact the whole thing when this panel was announced mere moments before the close of government's Christmas break so of course, no one could say anything in time for anything started it all. Then I read this article in the Montreal Gazette today. It's a wonder anything progresses in this country at all. Why the hell add someone with some specific knowledge on the topic to the committee/panel/working group. Who needs it. They aren't gonna listen anyway. I wish those fucking politicians would get off their high horses and appreciate the people in country for who they are, and not try (pretend) to know it all, when they really now NOTHING about it. The article says the members of the committee will, of course consult patients and doctors and experts before making any decisions. I call bullshit. I dare them. Double dare them!! Green Fertility Marie made mention of our Jigsaw Health sprouted organic pistachios in blog about fertility and pistachios. Cool!
And who knew this: some pistachio trees are male, others are female.
