Yet another sporting loss for Kiwis, and a so-close-yet-so-far moment for the Silver Ferns and New Zealand netball fans. I know it’s only a game, but it’s a game that’s tied up with our national pride!
The Silver Ferns put up an excellent fight in the 2007 Netball World Championships final against a strong Australian team, eventually losing 42-38 in a gripping finale.
The two teams (rivals going way back) were evenly matched, but Australia played an uncompromising game to beat the well-prepared Ferns. In a match that was marked by a lack of free-flowing play, the Ferns battled hard and kept the eyes of the 7,000-strong crowd glued to the court.
The Kiwis began the match with a fast paced, assertive attack, taking the early initiative against their long-standing rivals. Silver Ferns shooter Irene van Dyk fought for dominance against Australian shooter Liz Ellis, but the team failed to keep their stronger Australian counterparts at bay for long.

Fiddlehead ferns are a delicacy that only comes around once a year. In the mid spring they emerge in locations that provide the correct environment for them - they are very hard to find. They grow wild in the northeast US and Canada and finding their habitats is a challenge. As more people build in their growing areas, they are getting to be a rare find.Once finding them, it is imperative to select just a couple from each set, as they need to grow in order to come back the next year. The price for these edible ferns is very high which makes a greedy person pick all instead of just a few. This is also leading to their rarity, as less come back each year.Finding these rare treats and sharing in Mother Nature's once a year gift is something that will be remembered by my family as a special time.
Many of the NZS.com team were happily glued to their televisions on Saturday night for a tense All Blacks win against Australia and, on the same night, the match that some are calling the best game of netball ever played, with the Silver Ferns beating Australia in a cliffhanger double-overtime victory.
Our congratulations to both teams; we’re wishing you the best for the World Cup!

The picture shows some fine ferns which were photographed by the English Courtesan's own fair hand. That wasn't just an excuse for alliteration, much as the English Courtesan is fond of fabulous phrasing, but the frou-frou fronds of the ferns are in fact relevant to today's post... In response to a comment from the delightful Ex-Courtesan Gillette on 'Angry Courtesans & Escorts - Part II', the English Courtesan mentioned another of her favourite poems, Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas. So today she thought she'd share it in all its glory with the readers.Fern Hill was written in 1945 and was published in 'Deaths and Entrances', Dylan Thomas' fourth collection of poetry, in 1946. It's a long poem but the English Courtesan hopes you'll read to the end as the last two stanzas are arguably some of the most glorious and memorable poetry that has come out of the British Isles.By way of a tenuous link to the topic in hand, the readers might like to know that Dylan Thomas was reputed to ha
Kidney Ferns
This was taken on Rangitoto Island in Auckland. There is a nice walk to the top of the volcano along a lush track. These cute little plants curl up tightly when it is dry and unfurl when it rains. The only problem is that because it was so overcast and raining, I didn't have my polarising filter on, so there is some glare on the leaves.
