Front page, La Prensa, September 6, 2007Honduran President Mel Zelaya held a press conference regarding the status of the country this morning after Hurricane Felix. Reports were given by several heads of various business and government organizations, including COPECO (Honduran national emergency agency).I'm going to relay what I can from that press conference as well as various other Honduran reports today. The sound of the press conference was cutting out and the questions being asked by reporters couldn't be heard. That, along with the difficulty of understanding very fast Spanish speakers and taking notes in English at the same time means that I only have the highlights. President Zelaya stated that the red alert has been lifted for the entire country with the exception of low lying cities along the northern part of the Ulúa river. He said that the sun is shining all over Honduras right now. He stressed that international businesses and investors have nothing to worry about.
La Ceiba sky, 10 a.m., September 5, 2007So much to talk about (not hurricanes, but those who take advantage of them), but I'm sure that there are still many concerned about their friends and relatives in Honduras so here is an update:Hurricane Felix was a non-event for Honduras.With the exception of the sparsely populated La Mosquitia area, reports from people living in La Ceiba, Roatán, Gracias, Juticalpa, San Pedro, Siguatepeque, Tegucigalpa, Tela, Trujillo, Tocoa, Utila all report the same thing:Honduras had some rain and no wind to speak of. Several people in those areas commented that the rain was actually LESS than any normal day during rainy season. Here at my house, we received one inch (2.5 cm.) of rain from 6:20 until 11:00 p.m. last night and there has been no rain for the past 12 hours. Early reports from COPECO (Honduran national emergency agency) reported that agriculture, a major concern for Honduras, would not be affected at all.COPECO reported at 11 a.m. this morning
Tropical Storm Felix predicted path at 8 p.m. EDTWeather UndergroundHurricane Felix slammed into Nicaragua as a Category 5 hurricane early this morning but has been losing steam after making landfall and hitting the mountains of Nicaragua and Honduras.Felix has now been downgraded to a tropical storm. Not that tropical storm force winds (39-73 mph/63-119 kph) are anything to sneeze at, but it was greeted as great news by the local television stations.Now for you hurricane neophytes (Floridians can skip this part ;-) ), let me point out a couple of things about the map above. The large circles don't mean that the storm is getting bigger as it progresses. It just means that the further out in time that the predictions go, the less accurate the predictions are. There have been 31 category five hurricanes since 1886 and there has been eight in the last five years but until now there has never been two to make landfall in the same season. Hurricane Felix made landfall on the mosquito coast in northern Nicaragua about daybreak making it the second cat. 5 hurricane to hit this season. Hurricane Dean was the other cat. 5 to make landfall two weeks ago. Both storms have hit south of the US and have caused major damage. Felix is expected to cause floods and landslides as it moves across Central America. It has weakened a good bit since it made landfall but is still giving off a lot of rain below is a video of Felix as it hit Aruba.
We were getting some rain from around 11 a.m. to noon in La Ceiba, Honduras. So far it is just a normal tropical rain with no wind to speak of. At 12:30 p.m., the rain stopped and then started again about 1 p.m.Here is a video of what is happening in La Ceiba. Don't expect anything sensational − thank goodness! Honduran television reports and reports from friends in other areas of Honduras indicate that that there is rain or some heavy rain in most parts of the country but nothing significant at this point. Tropical Storm Felix has just been named an official hurricane. I'm a little bit more nervous about this one than I was about Hurricane Dean. I'm a hurricane neophyte, but even though Dean seemed larger and had faster winds, Felix is headed more in our direction.We are watching Felix on the National Hurricane Center when we have an internet connection. As of right now (Saturday night), they say it may be a Level 2 or 3 Hurricane as it passes the north coast of Honduras on Tuesday. The GDFL hurricane prediction model shows it going across the upper quarter of Honduras. The GFS model shows it heading directly for Honduras' Bay Islands. As always, predictions change over time, so we'll see what happens in the next three days.In my short history of blogging here in Honduras, it seems that whenever I blog about some weather event, it fizzles out and nothing happens.
