Tesseract is an open source OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine. In simple terms, it allows you to scan a document, and then (automatically) convert the text on the document to a .txt document. Instead of spending hours typing text from a piece of paper, simply scan the paper, save it as a .tif, and then convert to a text file. Setting this up on Ubuntu is extremely easy, and can be done from terminal: sudo apt-get install tesseract-ocr After installing, converting from .tif (image) to text is extremely easy. It was recorded on the outskirts of Paris in only two weeks and is absolutely fantastic warm and airy Parisienne Americana (whatever that means). Los drivers propietarios no soportan AIGLX a la fecha, por lo que para poder usar Beryl con AIGLX deberemos instalar los drivers libres de ATI que vienen con Edgy/Feisty.Además decir que si vamos a instalar los drivers libres, quedará deshabilitado el XGL si ya lo tenías instalado. Well after a few hours of kicking and screaming at my computer, I finally got Ubuntu 7.04 working on my desktop. I don’t know what originally caused my video card drivers to get messed up, but it was my own stupidity that drove the problem even further. I set my VideoRam in my config to what I thought was logical, 128. I know my video card is 128MB, so that just seemed right. Hours later I noticed that my xorg log said something to the effect of “Video Memory is 128KB overrides 131057KB.” That’s when I relealized it was measuring in KB rather than MB. Well, apparently the driver doesn’t like being so memory restricted. I got rid of the offending line and my entire install immediately began to work perfectly. Plus, I’m running the Ubuntu-recommended ATI drivers, so I won’t have to worry about future updates. Now that I’ve cleared that up, I’m very happy with Feisty. I waited all night, and I waited all morning for the newest release of Ubuntu. I was hanging out on #ubuntu-release-party channel on freenode. I was so excited! When I got home from classes it was finally released. I started the torrent… I found my nearest mirror… The servers were being clobbered. By the time I finally finished with the upgrade, I couldn’t wait to hit the restart button. Immediately upon reboot…. Wham! I got an xorg error. I spent the next 40 minutes working on the command line trying to get my ATI driver working. My last resort finally got me into the GUI, but only on a generic driver. It turns out that I was stuck in the middle of a partial upgrade. I’m finishing the upgrade now, but my Internet connection is capped. I hope these last 215 packages fixes the problem. I seem to always have ATI driver problems. Why can’t they just work? Why can’t everybody just be linux-friendly? 17 more minutes. I just want my Feisty :(

Ultimamente il tempo a disposizione e' davvero poco, ma non potevo non parlare dell'uscita della nuova relase di Ubuntu 7.04, nome in codice Feisty Fawn. Come si legge dal sito ufficiale la data del rilascio e' prevista per domani, ma in realtà e' già presente nella sezione release la ISO definitiva. Tutti gli ftp sono intasatissimi, sembra che la notorietà di questa distro accolga sempre più adepti, meno male che ho già effettuato l'update qualche giorno fa. E allora vi auguro buon download!

  Preparándonos para la salida de Feisty Fawn, se me ocurrió escribir este artículo, detallando algunas de las razones por las cuales, sí, deberían descargar esta nueva versión de Ubuntu, al menos para darle un vistazo. Así es, ya podemos confirmar lo que se especulaba hace unos días: Shipit estará enviando la nueva versión de Ubuntu, la 7.04 (que pronto estará disponible también para descargar desde la página web), completamente gratis. A todo el mundo. A diferencia de los envíos de Dapper, ahora estamos restringidos, por defecto, a un menor número de CDs. Con Dapper, recuerdo haber pedido como 10, para poder compartir Ubuntu con amigos y colegas. Esta vez, el pedido se limita a 1, o 3 Cds, o 2 Cds de la versión x86, mas una de la x64 (que fue el pedido que hice). Claro que podemos hacer pedidos especiales también, por si estaremos en alguna conferencia, y deseamos repartir el disco a los asistentes. Los discos tardarán, según la página web, hasta 10 semanas en llegar, dependiendo en qué parte del mundo vivamos. Pero hey, es completamente gratis, así que, quien se queja? Para los apurados, pues mejor resulta irlo descargando, una vez, claro, que esté disponible la versión final.

Esto es lo que JotaEse encontró, luego de visitar ShipIt, el servicio de envío de Cds gratuito de Ubuntu. Softpedia tiene un tour de fotos, mostrando varias novedades que podemos esperar de la nueva versión de la que fue catalogada como mejor distribución de Linux del año pasado (y que de hecho, está haciendo de linux una alternativa más viable a los que se cansaron de tanto Microsoft y Apple), Ubuntu. Esta nueva versión saldrá en Abril (por ello el número, 7.04 significa 2007-04), y traerá bastantes mejoras consigo, todas apuntando a hacer la experiencia de cambiarse de sistema operativo algo más fácil e intuitivo. Entre ellas: Un nuevo instalador, que hace de todo el acto de partición algo más sencillo. Pero lo más destacable, es que trae herramientas de migración de Windows, con lo que podremos importar contactos, favoritos de Firefox e Internet Explorer, fondos de pantalla, y más. Una de las quejas más comunes, eran los problemas con los drivers de tarjetas de video de las dos marcas más comunes, ATI y nVidia. Esto también será solucionado en la nueva versión

Ma io ovviamente non ce l'ho fatta ad attendere!
