Bed of feathers … or nails?
When my son was a toddler, one day he was too big for his baby stroller anymore. His stroller was practically brand new. We’d moved across the country the year before, and the airline broke it. That was tragic because not having a car, I used that thing as a vehicle, for tripping and shopping. [...]

Chad Roby - Teacher With Hawk Feathers Hair Caught In Undercover Child Sex Sting - Convicted On Child Pornography Charges
Mt. Prospect, Ill (ThaLunatic Daily) -- Chad Roby, a 34 year old former 6th-grade English and social studies teacher at River Trails Middle School in Mt. Prospect, Illinois has pleaded guilty and been sentenced on one count of possession of child pornography.Police first learned about Roby's activities when they caught him using online chat rooms to chat with under-aged boys. Roby had an interesting conversation with what he thought was a 13 year old boy. It was instead an undercover officer (not likely Roby's type).Roby was arrested in June, 2006 when he set up a meet at a local mall with what he thought was an under-aged boy. Court documents revealed that Roby had sent the undercover officer sexually suggestive photos of himself before going to the mall.Roby's arrest led police to

Feathers Friday: Lend Me A Hand

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Thanks D. for your insightful private email you sent. I love the above quote. How very appropriate. you are indeed right that I did leave out another group who feel like second class citizens. Step children do indeed grow up with this very same feeling that adopted children do. My previous post appears to have ruffled some feathers if I am to judge by both the comments and email received. I am however not swayed. Termination of Parental Rights is not and never should be the Answer to getting and receiving residential placements for the seriously mentally ill child. This is not therapeutic in any way ,shape or form and will indeed cause more trauma than help to a chil

      Feathers and Glitter
For the next couple of weeks, it's all about getting ready for Originals Spring Show. I'm still working on the collection of small format paintings on 5 x 7 inch canvas board. Here are a couple more I've finished this week. This one is called Arianna. She's got dramatic blue eyeshadow with all kinds of sparkly glitter. This one is called Alina, yes I'm working my way through the "A"s. She's very glittery and is topped off with a Swarovski crystal and real feather on her head band. And I discovered today that even all cleaned and dyed these feathers are irresistible to both the dog and the cat!

      The Science of Blue Feathers
There are plenty of people who have become very much attached to the ‘law of attraction’ in one way or another, carving out their position, either ‘for’ or (less understandably) ‘against.’ Some of the articles I have read recently are almost evangelical in their fervor – it’s as if the authors are trying to convince the readers that they are right, one way or the other. This says something very interesting about human nature, I suppose – we obviously feel the need to align ourselves with some position or other, to be identified as a follower of this or a proponent of that or a arch-skeptic of the other. I guess we need to ‘belong’ to something, and this also explains, perhaps, the success of social networking on the Internet, where ‘birds of a feather stick together

Can’t help but make feathers fly
The following text is originally lifted from the trivia section of The Jakarta Post dated Monday, 21 January 2008. ~Compiled from various sources~ 90% of all species that have become extinct have been birds.Although the dodo had wings, it could not lift them into the air.In addition to eating most likely fruits, nuts, vegetation and berries, the dodo also swallowed a large stone to help it digest its food. This phenomenon of stone-swallowing continues today among some bird species of the world.A crow stays with his parents for up to five years after fledgling and helps raise his parent’s new offspring.A crow stays with its mate for life.Crows occasionally kick their subordinates. Figaro and His Fluffy Feathers
(Here is The Audio Version by Audio Acrobat:) Once upon a time there was a flamingo named Figaro.Figaro was a flamingo with soft, fluffy, pink feathers. Figaro’s feathers were the talk of the town! Everyone liked how pink they were and always took pictures when he would walk by. They would comment on how full Figaro’s feathers were, and how much they wish they had feathers like that. Sometimes pictures of Figaro were put in the town newspaper with stories of how great Figaro’s feathers looked when he was spotted out on the town. Figaro spent a lot of money to take care of his feathers, because he was proud of them and he wanted them to look their best. There was the monthly pruning, weekly conditioning, and daily fluff work of course. Figaro was looking extra sharp and every time he

The wonderful husband has fixed the computer! Scanner's hooked up (see?), email's on the way ... testing for prints not far behind. I've been spending my creative time at night drawing anything that comes to mind, and then painting whenever and wherever I can. These new paintings aren't supposed to be perfect, far from it. Anything that strikes my fancy gets drawn. I'm not obsessing over details, slavishly researching images (which I couldn't do once my studio's computer was down anyway), or waiting for the perfect moment. My only rules are that I try to draw or paint something every night, and that if something inspires me, no matter how small a detail, I have to give into it and let myself paint it somehow. This mostly happens with the kids in the afternoon; I can either put down a

      Feathers
Birds are the only animals that have feathers, and they serve several purposes.  Feathers help birds to fly, they keep the birds warm, they attract the attention of potential mates, and they help scare away predators. Did you know that the conure has between 2000 and 3000 feathers on their body?  These feathers grow from follicles that are arranged in rows known as pterylae.  The unfeathered patches of bare skin on your conure’s body are called apteria. A feather is a remarkably designed creation.  The base of the feather shaft, which fits into the bird’s skin, is called the quill.  It is light and hollow, but remarkably tough.  The upper part of the feather shaft is called the rachis.  From the rachis branch the barbs and barbules (smaller barbs) that make up most of the feather.  The barbs and barbules have small hooks on them that enable the different parts of the feather to interlock like Velcro and form the feather’s vane or web.  Feather colour

      Sandys' New Feathers
Silly Bird actually enjoys the new construction paper feathers the kids crafted for him. He not only kept them in but pranced around the table doing a bird dance for us.It has been relatively quiet around here lately with the boys on house arrest and sporting better attitudes. The easy thing to do would be to keep them under house arrest just to keep them out of trouble but sadly they need these experiences to learn from. I did get a rather odd compliment from the yahoos today in that the three agreed that I have been more of a mom to them than even their birth moms had been. WOW....now that's a an improvement but it was followed by "you put up with what we dish out and haven't tossed us to the street." Ahh...so that's the criteria in their book for being a good mom ? Or is their actions some test to see if I Bob and I pass ?

Hen-pecked chook's feathersStumps of feathers from a hen-pecked chookOur 12 laying hens have recently been attacking each other to various degrees, and this is the result of a few close encounters with sharp beaks. It's an unusual subject for a photo, but that's a big part of photography - taking a different view at everyday things. This photo was just taken on the spur of the moment when I saw one of the hens being transferred to a new cage. The curves of the feather stems concentrate towards the middle-right section of the image. They form a sort of recurring pattern which does seem to have some order about it. The single remaining feather in the middle of the bunch of short "stumps" brings the sense of contrast in again. The whole picture centers on the basis of curves and two colors - blue/gray and brown/orange.Well, it's already the 14th - entries to the "best bits" survey closed yesterday. Back to electronica this post, with one of Britain's finest exports: Fila Brazillia.I'll start with two pretty old tracks from them. The first is from their '95 album Maim that tune, and sounds typical of the languorous, shuffly beats of that era. The second (from Black Market Gardening, '96) has a far more 'disco' feel to it, partly due perhaps to its sampling of Last night changed it all. It really used to get the crowd going in the Welly Club on a Friday night.Fila Brazillia - LeggyFila Brazillia - Wigs, bifocals and nourishment2002's release Jumpleads was a bit of a change of direction for Fila. They'd been touring as a band since 1999, mainly playing live versions of the tracks they'd written and recorded as a duo, but this album was based around a live band and written with live performance specifically in mind. - One of these gigs almost messed my wedding up in October '99, because the manager of the venue got too mashed watching Fila the night before. Democrats Debate-- No Ruffled Feathers!
Yes, the first debate among eight Democratic candidates went off without an itch, so as to speak; although Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and former Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK) made an effort to be confrontational. But in Act I, scene one, this drama played out with no feathers ruffled. There was little to feed the hungry spin doctors. Why? Literally, there were really no gaffes or slip of the tongue, no one really had to say later "hell, what was I thinking"! Unity and civility ruled the moment. In short, responses were generally overused talking points and bumper sticker slogans. They were on message and the format did not allow interaction among them which would possibly have added some infighting, the dog war reaction some anticipated. Nevertheless, Mike Gravel, a complete unknown, and at best a 'third tier' candidate, used this opportunity to throw a 'few stones' at the four senators who earlier that day voted for a bill that would set a timetable to bring the troops hom
