Indians Find U.S. at Fault in Food Cost
Instead of blaming India and other developing nations for the rise in food prices, Americans should rethink their energy policy — and go on a diet. That has been the response, basically, of a growing number of politicians, economists and academics in this country, who are angry at statements by top United States officials that India’s rising prosperity is to blame for food inflation. The debate

NATURAL DISASTERS: Is it God's fault or our fault?
I would argue it is our fault since avoiding expedient, cheap, poor construction and planning in addition to halfhearted environmental and urban policy would avoid many deaths from natural disasters. Certainly, family planning and adequate emergency action plans are needed too.Natural disasters will continue to become worse as governments and people ignorantly change the environment, do not becom

His penalty for that miscalculation is 15 days on the disabled list starting last night. "The curse of being a good healer is I thought I was ready in three days," said Rodriguez, who first sustained the injury in Baltimore. "I made it worse. But if you ask me if I could play tonight, I'll go out there tonight. I'll play until I'm dead." Rodriguez has a Grade 2 strain, but is confident he'll be activated in two weeks. He blames nobody but himself for his situation. "I wanted to play," he said before the Yanks' 6-2 loss to the Tigers. "I begged to get in there. The

Midwesterners received the shock of their lives this morning- an earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the richter scale, rattled the Midwest from St. Louis to Indianapolis early this morning. The earthquake center was about 6 miles from West Salem, Illinois, but the seismic activity was felt up to 350 miles away. Earthquake activity, while extremely rare, does occur occasionally in the region due to the New Madrid fault line, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (earthquake.usgs.gov). A lesser known northern extension of the New Madrid fault line, the Wabash fault (or Wabash Valley fault), is also believed to have been involved in today's earthquake.Watch this sleepy resident describe his experience:Nonetheless, it was a very surprising wake-up call this Friday morning.View the AP news source

Tracing Fault Lines Through the Caucasus Mountains
By Hugh BarnesThe snowcapped mountains of the Caucasus, which stretch for more than 1,000 kilometers between the Caspian and the Black Sea, owe their existence to a geological collision. Twenty-five million years ago, the landmasses of Europe and Asia crashed into each other, pushing the edges skyward. In “The Ghost of Freedom,” a new history of the region, Georgetown University professor Charles King describes a recurring pattern of upheaval and confrontation. He begins with that prehistoric clash of continents and ends with Russia’s recent military adventures in Chechnya, which have left more than 75,000 people dead and several times that number homeless.Journalists have a variety of explanations for the apparently senseless violence. I actually watched Obama's rally in Indiana. I'm a little surprised how unimpressive he is when he's not reading from prepared texts. He answers softballs from the audience with a complete lack of originality: Domestic violence is bad and under-reported? Frankly, I'm beginning to doubt that he'd bring any kind of change I can believe in. Anyways, he addressed the Wright affair. His point seems to be that any controversy is the fault of the people who brought Jeremiah Wright up in the first place. Reporters: Stop dividing us! Leave this stuff alone. The list also includes Chris Donald, Ricardo Kemp, and Kenny O’Neal. Many have been quick to jump on Fulmer and the coaching staff for a lack of control and for not being on top of this situation sooner. However, according to Doug Matthews, a radio personality in Nashville and former Tennessee position coach and defensive coordinator, that may not be a fair assessment. Matthews contends that the University decided to take the academic control away from the Athletic Department several years ago. The old rules allowed the coaches to be involved in this process to monitor a student’s progress but that is no longer the case. According to him, coaches aren’t allowed to even speak to the professors and therefore are “handcuffed by what the rules will allow them to do”. He wa

Tonight we went to the Clyde Theatre to see No End in Sight. This is an extremely powerful and, ultimately, depressing movie. The movie details the planning, or rather the lack of planning, that went into the occupation of Iraq by the United States. The movie points out some of the serious mistakes that are made. The reasons for these mistakes are unexplained, and one leaves the theatre with a sense of despair over any possible way to extricate ourselves from this mess. The movie should generate considerable discussion at Rockhoppers -- this Saturday the local Move-On organization, Move-On Whidbey, is hosting a brunch at the coffeehouse to discuss this movie. Double shot. Movies on Whidbey Island.

But, here is the thing. After the most recent quarter which is rapidly becoming a Citi-implosion only and not a "banking sector issue" I have only one observation. If Rubin is so... I was Evicted, But It’s Not My Fault
There is a large, and growing group of people who are crying foul, that is, renters. It was only a matter of time before the economic tsunami of the “credit crunch” overwhelmed innocent victims, and we give Kelly Evans of the Wall Street Journal kudos for breaking the story. Our Caution: We are highlighting, and commenting upon, a very well written piece of work by the Journal, however, we maintain that Boston city-center foreclosure rates are extremely low, and that the Boston downtown real estate market is strong, there are statistics to prove this. This piece is more a look at a pan-US situation (major downtown city-center areas excluded), and should not be looked at as speaking specifically to the Boston market itself. Essentially, we’re dealing with two main threads that combine to be a potent force that is impacting renters in a housing and mortgage market that they chose (or rather attempted) to avoid. Many single- and multi-family homes held by investors tha

      No-fault Auto insurance in Florida
The Florida Legislature has passed a bill to bring back the state's no-fault auto insurance system Jan. 1. It is a good news for Florida residence. If any accidents happen, the people will be have been covered by Medical care and insurance company will pay the bill to hospital. If this one is missing, the people may have not enough emergent fund to get proper treatment. Or, after treatment, he can not pay the bill of it. I trust No-fault Auto Insurance should be included in the basic Auto Insurance coverage. The bill to restore no-fault passed the House 105-4 early Friday and later in the day was passed unanimously by the Senate. Gov. Charlie Crist has indicated he will sign the bill into law The system that expired Oct. 1 provided no-fault coverage for damage resulting from automobile accidents and required drivers to buy at least $10,000 in coverage, which covers medical expenses if they have no health insurance. State legislators failed to extend the law during the regular

Fault Line on Jihad: Why the Omeish Reaction is Important
On September 28, the Investigative Project on Terrorism's (IPT) Lorenzo Vidino was on FOX news addressing IPT's release of videos regarding Muslim American Society (MAS) president Esam Omeish showing his documented support of Jihad. The interview points out once again the problems with the America government failing to clearly identity the enemy and failing to have a clearly defined policy on Jihad and on political Islamism . I know we've been tough on the Democrats in Congress for not ending the Iraq war and not standing up to the President.Let today's actions in the Senate be proof that the Democrats ARE in fact doing what they can to end the war and stand up to the President.Twice today, all Democrats (excluding Lieberman of course) voted to restore habeas corpus to detainees and to require troops to be home for the same amount of time as they are deployed, both against what the Bush administration wants. All Democrats and six Republicans...a good majority, 56.They just don't have the votes. You want change, you need to elect more Senators who want change. 50 votes don't cut in the Senate.

      It's not his fault
Alan Duncan, writing in the New Statesman, is slightly unfair in his portioning of blame for the recent economic downturn:He has doubled the council tax, destroyed people's pension, increased the proportion of GDP taken by the state, created jobs disproportionately in the public sector, taxed everything that moves (and right up to the buffers) and presided over a collapse in saving. Personal debt has soared, and many personal mortgages are on a 2 year special deal cliff edge. Credit card debts are also a game of pass the parcel as people try to take advantage of 6 month 0% deals. The economy has no slack in it to cope with a downturn; it is unduly reliant on the City; and housing transaction costs are likely to prove an exaggerated downward force on the housing market. He has not even managed the public finances sufficient to support inflation-based increases for public sector pay. There is a weak case to be made for the impact of Gordon Brown on pensions and increased taxation, but mo

Who's fault is the mortgage 'meltdown' or whatever you call it? You? Me? Everyone?
These days, I see all kinds of finger-pointing.  Most even make good points, and lots of people agree, sometimes people disagree.  You have predatory lenders.  You have predatory brokers.  You have predatory banks.  You have Realtors that contribute to the problems.  You have the borrower themselves that have caused part of the problem.  Think about it, EVERYONE to some degree has contributed.  Rather than continuing to finger-point, even with valid good reason, let's FIX the problems!  There are lots to fix!  I certainly do not profess to have all the answers or solutions, because I certainly do NOT!  I see many given on various blogs on AR and even in the media.  Our government needs to review the entire situation as best they can, and start implementing some corrective actions.  The new HUD program coming out seems like a good start.  I'm not sure if it will work, but at least it is a start, and

We’re still drinking iced tea in the kitchen, or Nina is. I sip slowly. The girl makes some allowances for my eighty-four years but her overall confidence that I’ll keep up flatters me, even if it comes from her harried lack of consideration. And Nina’s very harried. She has no help with the house or the children and loses sleep writing novels, despite no contacts in publishing. Even she admits her efforts aren’t commercial. “I’m taking a chance,” she says, “like playing the lottery.”  Well, yes, but to me, buying a scratch-off card is almost smart compared to her clandestine labors going nowhere. Both she and my grandson express admiration at my readiness to fly here and stay overnight so I can watch my great-grandchildren play on the playground, albeit from a bench; I’m not strong enough or steady enough on my feet to push the swings. Nina’s all too aware of how seriously unsteady I am. But my grandson has offered me his arm since he was ten. And I can

When Post Traumatic Stress Disorder becomes your own fault
Treating the trauma of war – fairly - Yahoo! News: The US is doing what warring countries have done since the First World War, changing the definition of what ‘Shell Shock’ or ‘Post Traumatic Stress Disorder’ (PTSD) means. In this article Treating the trauma of war – fairly we learn that the US military is trying to wiggle out of long-term costs by taking the blame from war and placing it on the soldier: The military, however, has changed the terms and given many thousands of enlisted men and women a new diagnosis: “personality disorder.” While the government would be obliged to care for veterans suffering from combat-related trauma, a personality disorder – defined as an ingrained, maladaptive way of orienting oneself to the world – predates a soldier’s tour of duty (read: preexisting condition). This absolves Uncle Sam of any responsibility for the person’s mental suffering. The new diagnostic label sends the message: This

He finally paid up this week, donning a blue Peyton Manning jersey and making an appearance at Colts training camp. “I’m the loser,” Rummel said. Well, that sums it up pretty well. While Rummel’s appearance seemed like all fun and games, there is an underlying problem with these kinds of bets. Every year the mayors from the territory of the underdog are forced into a losing proposition. They can’t show a lack of confidence in their team by betting with the spread or a money line, and so they have to take bad odds by only betting on the winner. It doesn’t matter that it’s just a friendly bet, these men shouldn’t have to do that. Hopefully someday there will be a brave mayor who won’t blindly support the 16 point hometown underdog without demanding that the friendly wager include th

Perhaps if Rocawear would have come out with this hoodie sooner, I wouldn't have this rebellious streak, but I really like this hoodie. Plus, skulls always remind me of pirates, and I still aspire to be a pirate when I grow up because I just like the idea of saying I'm swashbuckling. To be honest, I considered buying a similar hoodie from the guys section a while ago, since there wasn't a skull collection for women, but now Jay-Z has caught on (a little late maybe, but caught on none the less). The hoodie is 3/4 sleeves, tunic length, and reversible. The green side is a large dot printed skull, which wouldn't be my personal favorite side, but may appeal to some. Toy Recalls are China’s Fault
I’m sorry that I have to do this to everyone, but it’s time I put on my serious pants for a moment. When a parent buys a toy for a child, the last thing on their mind is that toy may very well kill or maim their son or daughter. However, not every toy is completely safe and there are hundreds of toy recalls every year to get dangerous toys off the market. A friend to the site, Keith, recently sent me an article that discussed where many of the dangerous toys come from (real link). It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but one out of every twenty four toys recalled comes from China. More shocking is that Chinese made products are responsible for 60% of all product recalls today. New Zealand isn't an Arab country. How did that one get in the list. Yet it seems that Mike Moreu is inspired by the Arab media for his ideas and cartoons. It is the cartoon of the day on Stuff (which is NZs online newspaper). It is not a particularly funny or witty idea, but all three papers seem to view what is going on in Gaza as some sporting event set up by the Israelis to kill Palestinians. Clearly it cannot be the fault of the Palestinians! Thanks to YID With LID for finding the cartoons from the Arab media.have a nice day

Rep. Peterman: 'You can't fault the school'
State Rep. Frank Peterman, D-St. Pete, won't be upset if a key component of the state's school grading formula gets nixed by the Board of Education tomorrow. The component in question penalizes schools a full letter grade if a majority of their most-struggling students don't make academic progress on the FCAT. Education Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg recommended last week that the state suspend that provision, and Peterman told The Gradebook he supports the move: "You can't fault the school," he said. "You can't expect the school, with the resources they have, to do that overnight." Peterman's position puts him at odds with another member of the Legislature's Black Caucus, Rep. Curtis Richardson, D-Tallahassee, who told the St. Petersburg Times for a story in Saturday's paper that the penalty provision was one of the few planks in Jeb Bush's school accountability system he liked. The Orlando Sentinel weighed in with this editorial Sunday.

On almost every single issue all of the candidates criticized the president. Surprisingly Tommy Thompson, a former Cabinet Member in the Bush White House, came out in criticism against the President. Not at all surprisingly though Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter, both outspoken proponents of border control, had harsh words for the White House and the President in particular on the current immigration bill. I heard an audio clip of the debate on the radio driving home from work and John McCain was asked about the immigration bill and he admitted it wouldn’t be the one he would write then he went on to ask if anyone had a better idea. The down side of reading the book, especially when he talks about meat, is that it makes me hungry and gives the itch to cook. I don't have as much time to cook as I would love to and I don't usually have the ingredients to cook what ever it is I feel like cooking. I have a craving for Thai beef noodles but I haven't gotten around to satisfying that craving yet. I guess I could find the recipe, which I did (here), but I'm not sure if it's the same thing as the beef noodle soup. This off-duty cop followed Foley, in his civilian vehicle, to a neighborhood about 25 minutes away from where the cop began following Foley. When Foley exited the freeway he realized someone was following him. He stopped the car on the side of the road and exchanged words with the officer. Foley and the officer then got back in their cars and continued driving, where they eventually met in cul-de-sac not far from Foley’s home. Stop for a second and put yourself in Foley’s shoes, he has realized that he has been followed off of the highway and now into his neighborhood at 3 a.m. by a man whom he doesn’t know.
