Exercise in the heat: The "off-switch," the limiting temperature, and the Beijing OlympicsWe're back with more on fatigue, and as promised, the strategy we'll adopt over the next few posts is to look at fatigue in very specific situations. These situations, often the intervention controlled by the scientists, offer a glimpse into how exercise performance is either limited or regulated, and help

Fatigue in "real life": How exercise type influences conclusions and our understanding of fatigueBack in the saddle for Part 3 of our series on Fatigue today. In previous posts, we've introduced the concept of Anticipatory Regulation, and contrasted it with the theory of "limitations" of exercise performance. We introduced the pacing strategy concept, which is often dismissed as "obvious" (because it is!), but is in fact one of the most complex, and meaningful characteristics of exercise performance for physiologists. What we'll do next is go through a number of different situations, scenarios and "challenges" faced by the body during exercise in order to delve into the concept of anticipatory regulation vs. peripheral fatigue a little more. That series of posts will look at:The physiol
The pacing strategy continued: Setting the scene with two examples and a summary of modelsIn yesterday's post, we looked at the admittedly rather obvious question of why a pacing strategy exists. It's a question that is often dismissed as non-sensical and irrelevant with an obvious answer, but hopefully, it's possible to recognize that in fact, this question has profound implications for exercise physiology. First of all, it has no explanation according to the prevailing theory for fatigue. Secondly, it stimulates one to think a little more deeply about why such an obvious thing exists. In otherwords, is it conscious or sub-conscious, or perhaps even "pre-conscious"? Is it simply a function of training and experience? But then, how does training help you understand how to pace yourself? W
The pacing strategy - why the "obvious" is crucially importantOn Tuesday, we introduced a new series on Fatigue and Performance, which, based on the comments and responses so far, promises to provide much food for thought, interesting discussion and a few strong opinions! And thinking about the subject (see my thoughts at the bottom of this post), it's clear that the most difficult part of this whole series is going to be controlling the logical flow of the discussion. It's such a vast, enormous topic that it's going to be impossible to put across a vast amount of information without skipping over studies that some might consider relevant. That's the nature of science - if not, then every review article would have thousands of references! So literally, ten years of academic debate and resea

Introducing a new series: The mystery of fatigue and the limits to performanceHere's one of the million dollar questions in sports sciences today: How is it possible for a 10km runner to SPEED UP in the final 400m of his race? And if he had that "reserve capacity" all along, why did he not speed up 800m before the end? Or 2km? The whole way?As you read that, you're probably thinking "Big deal, what a ridiculous question. It's obvious that you can't speed up, because....um, well, you see, it's the....why was that again?"And now, physiologically speaking, you are stuck. Because the reality is that there is no single physiological theory that can properly explain why athletes pace themselves the way they do, why fatigue happens and what limits performance. There is no book, no proof,
As a former sufferer of hypoglycemia, adrenal fatigue and various allergic conditions I often asked myself 'why me?' I sometimes wish that I'd known then what I know now as it would have made it so much easier. I am here to offer you hope that you are not alone. It is suggested that the majority of people with fatigue disorders are sensitive people. Can you recognise yourself here? Are you easily overwhelmed by such things as bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, or sirens nearby? Do you get rattled when you have a lot to do in a short amount of time? Do you make a point of avoiding violent movies and TV shows? Do you need to withdraw during busy days, into bed or a darkened room or some other place where you can have privacy and relief from the situation? Do you make it a high pri

All systems in your body need energy to function properly. How you produce and distribute energy is complex; thyroid hormone function has a major impact on all of your energy systems. However, not all fatigue or tiredness is due to thyroid malfunction. How do you tell the difference?
Thyroid hormone governs the basal metabolic rate, which is like the idling speed of a car engine. Even when you are sitting in a chair or sleeping your 100 trillion cells keep making energy. This type of energy production is the foundation for all other energy and hormonal systems. If it is not up to par, no other system in your body works as well as it should.
When you step on the gas pedal during the day, this is not thyroid hormone that goes into action. Increased activity of any kind i
The Clinical Cases and Images blog picked up on my recent post named "The Pressure of Posting." They raise the question of whether blogging in general has kind of become passe and yesterday's news. With so many different ways to express yourself like Twitter (guilty of being on too much), Facebook, and other social networking sites, has the blog become kind of ancient? In the world of podcasting (of which I would call myself a very minor player), there is a term called "Podfading." It is a situation in which a podcast either becomes more and more infrequent or just stops abruptly - thereby leaving the audience not quite knowing what to do. A definitely parallel can be made with blogs, video blogging, or any other new media product. In applying all of this to me (since this is my blog, you kn

Maybe it's just me, but lately I've been having a rare case of "election fatigue". As someone who enjoys following politics a lot I'm finding everything to be somewhat boring because the primary process is basically down to two questions:Will the Democratic nominee be Obama or Hillary? How much longer until Mike Huckabee drops out?Without over dramatizing these two questions like the media loves to do I will give my predictions because for some reason I love predicting things.Hillary will be the Democratic nominee: While the media is all caught up into Obama's latest winning streak, we must not lose sight that this is a delegate battle. It WILL come down to super delegates. While the Obama supporters say super delegates should go with the "will of the people" super delegates are allowed to
Columbia researchers shed light on mechanism of muscle fatigueFirst, thanks to many of you who sent us the article by Gina Kolata from the New York Times. It is a hot news week, first with this story breaking on Tuesday and also with Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee testifying before a congressional panel on Wednesday. This kind of story on fatigue is right up our alley here at The Science of Sport, and so let's take a look at this and see what it is all about before we get to the Clemens/McNamee hearings. Why study fatigue?Since its inception the profession of Exercise Physiology has focused on "fatigue." This is a broad term, and fatigue has many manifestations. We can fatigue during dynamic maximal exercise such as a peak power output test, and we can fatigue during sub-maximal (endur
(HealthDay News) -- An experimental drug may help fatigued athletes and patients weakened by heart failure regain their energy, say physiologists at Columbia University Medical Center.Tests on mice and humans found that, after extreme exercise regimens, tiny leaks of calcium continuously enter the muscle cells, according to the study published online in the Feb. 11 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The leak weakens the force produced by the muscle and also turns on a protein-digesting enzyme that damages the muscle fibers, leading to the overall feeling of exhaustion for days or weeks afterward. This same leak was previously discovered by Columbia researchers in the muscles of animals with heart failure. The researchers then developed an experimental drug to plug
This is it: the 3rd and last part of my article about CFS. For those who are experiencing Chronic Fatigue syndrome, be happy because even though there is no cure for CFS, but most symptoms can be treated successfully. The first treatment most doctors recommend is a combination of rest, exercise, and proper diet. The patient is advised to attempt only the most important activities, to avoid over-exerting himself or herself, and to rest whenever necessary. A moderate amount of exercise is important, but too much exercise can make the disease worse. Counseling and stress reduction (learning how to better handle the pressures of everyday life) can also be helpful. Many medications, nutritional supplements (like vitamins and minerals), and herbal preparations have been used to treat CFS. Doctors
This is the second part of my article about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Here, we will talk about the causes and symptoms of CFS. In fact, there is no single known cause for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some factors that are thought to be responsible for the disease are:* Viral infections (enterovirus)* Chemical toxins (poisons)* Allergies* Abnormalities in the immune system* Psychological disordersMany doctors now believe that CFS is not one illness, but a combination of symptoms caused by several factors. According to one theory, the first step in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is infection by a virus. About 90 percent of all people have a virus in the herpes family in their bodies. Herpes viruses cause a number of problems, including cold sores and a painful inflammation of the nerves called shingl
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a condition that causes extreme tiredness. People with CFS are so tired that they are unable to carry on normal activities for a period of at least six months. They also have other symptoms, such as pain in the joints and muscles, headaches, and sore throat. There is no single known cause for CFS; it appears to result from a number of factors.Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is known by many different names. These names include Chronic Fatigue and Immune Disorder (CFIDS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (pronounced my-AL-jik en-SEF-uh-lo-MY-uh-LY-tiss), Low Natural Killer Cell Disease, Post-Viral Syndrome, Epstein-Barr Disease, and Yuppie Flu. Such names suggest a number of possible causes for CFS. Researchers have not been able to find out which of these causes, or whi
80% of women suffer from Adrenal Fatigue and never even know it. They go on with their crazy, hectic schedules, thinking that this is just they way they will feel for the rest of their lives…but that is so not truth!
What is Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue is when your adrenal glans aren’t working properly. Your adrenal glands are what produce over 50 essential hormones, including adrenaline, estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol and DHEA and provide us with our energy level.
How do know if you suffer from Adrenal Fatigue?
Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are:
*extreme exhaustion or feeling tired constantly
*insomnia
*increased PMS
*muscle weaknesses or arthritis
*frequent illnesses
*lack of concentration, decreased short term memory
*inability to lose weight
Adrenal fatigue can go in cycles throughout the day. You wake up feeling tired and after eating lunch, you start to feel more energetic, then about 3pm, you are exhausted again. You get a second wave of energy
Eye fatigueNearsightedness (Myopia)Blurred visionEye pain Poets throughout the ages have often looked upon the eyes as the "windows of the soul". With a somewhat less romantic view, we can see that the eyes and their surrounding tissues are among the body's most delicate structures. Most of us value our gift of sight above all other senses. The eye is actually a direct extension of the brain. The retina—the light-sensitive structure at the back of the eye—contains millions of rods and cones, which are specialized nerve endings which convert light into electrical impulses. These impulses are then conveyed by the optic nerve to the visual center at the back of the brain, where the individual interprets them as specific images. In Oriental medicine the sense of vision and the eyes are under the control of the liver. If eye sight is failing it is the liver that is also failing in its function. The whole body with all the internal organ functions are represented in the eye. With study o

Acupressure for M.E / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and FibromyalgiaTraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) including Acupressure, Chinese Herbal medicine, Moxa and cupping techniques, have been in use for up to 5000 years. For some of that time it was tradition only to pay your doctor while you were healthy - the cash stopped when you got sick - although economically impractical just think how quickly western medicine would have evolved if preventative medicine and results paid, not tradition, reputation or good marketing! The basic theory of T.C.M is that energy or Chi is generated by breathing, and passes around the body through twelve major channels, each related to an organ, starting with the Lung and finishing with the Liver. If the chi becomes stagnant or weak in any of these channels illness will develop and so the aim is to unclog and tonify these internal energies until a balance is restored and consequently health should improve. To a practicioner of TCM, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, M.E
Temple fatigue - it happens in Egypt, it happens in Asia and it happens in Europe, only there it’s called church fatigue. Basically, there are only so many ancient/old sites you can see before they all look the same. On my recent trip to Egypt this phenomenon threatened to take over the vacation with no end in site. With an ancient civilization of over 4,000 years, you are bound to run into a little temple fatigue along the way. You know it’s struck when you are looking at an incredible piece of artwork carved thousands of years ago and all you can think is “yeah, seen it before at so and so temple!”. Traveling in Egypt, this is as big a risk as contracting hepatitis and tetanus!
Whenever you visit any place in the world where the main attraction is a certain period in history you risk “something really old but no different to the place we just saw” fatigue. In these cases, the guide showing you the sites makes all the difference. Luckily on my recen
Last week there was a report published on Search Fatigue showing that 72% of all individuals basically give up because they were unable to find what they were searching for. Margie did a great job on her blog post last week, trying to provide some insight on how to search smarter, but here is a way to search faster. Instead of using Google (or Yahoo) to do your search, then going to Yahoo after you could not find what you are searching for, there is a site that lets you search two engines at once, Polycola.com. The default settings are Yahoo and Google, but visitors can also search Live, Ask, Dogpile, AltaVista and AOL via a simple dropdown. It is also possible to search just the web, images, videos, news, shopping, directory, answers or blogs by clicking on the appropriate circle. The results are then shown splitscreen. One of the pluses is that the results are focused more on the natural search results, not the paid listings. This, unfortunately does not help searchers se
In Greg Sterling's blog today at Search Engine Land, he reports on a recent study that found 7 out of 10 Americans Experience "Search Engine Fatigue". After reading his excerpts of the report, I'd define this phenomenon as "the frustration created when spending an inordinate amount of time searching and not finding what you were looking for". Many respondents (78%) actually "wished for a search engine to be able to read their minds". Greg suggests that this is a strong argument for search personalization – which is a great idea for a sophisticated searcher. But, my first thought was more along the lines of "these people need to learn how to perform a search". Some people are good at search – meaning, they can use a search engine, and most of time find what they're looking for. They've learned how to use keywords, filter their searches and other tactics that many consider "advanced" techniques. But how does the average internet user learn to search and become better at it

By Anne MillsIt is a striking characteristic of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia (CFS/FM) that people have such incredible difficultly in accepting that someone with CFS/FM is really ill. While being assailed by hideous assaults on body, mind and an individual’s very being, sufferers face yet more staggering obstacles created by the lack of true understanding from other people. This is a very real situation that has to be faced by many sufferers, and can be a crushing impediment to improvement.Sufferers face a huge struggle in trying to convey the despair and helplessness felt when in the grip of CFS/FM, while being confronted with disbelief, allegations of malingering or pathetic weakness, blame for bringing illness on themselves, insinuations that the illness is purely psychological or just imagined, claims of attention-seeking, or any number of harsh judgments rising from ignorance or lack of compassion. Many people can only relate to their own experiences, so are incapabl
By Richard ShryackRunning for 10 years now has taught me a few things about fatigue. I have learned that my body always reaches a point that it needs a break. Days and weeks of training take their toll on my emotional and physical well being. I have come up with a few ideas of mine that will help you fight fatigue.First and most often over looked is the importance of a good night’s sleep. My own biggest source of fatigue is not getting 8 hours of sleep a night. Being an active person I can always think of something that I need to do. I try to stick to a scheduled time for bed. This can be difficult at times when life throws me a curve. I would say that 5 nights a week I stick to my schedule.Second is the importance of eating right. Every time I start eating fast food and drinking beer my running performance suffers, plus I feel lousy all the time. I always start my day with a good breakfast of cereal or oatmeal. I enjoy eating fruit with my cereal and oatmeal. My favorites are banana

According to 2 Canadian researchers in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, Vol. 6, No. 1, 25-35 (2007), Reiki Therapy is more effective than an hour of daily rest in treating cancer-related fatigue. In the article, Pilot Crossover Trial of Reiki Versus Rest for Treating Cancer-Related Fatigue, the authors conclude, "indicated significant decreases in tiredness..., pain..., and anxiety..., which were not seen in the resting condition. Future research should further investigate the impact of Reiki using more highly controlled designs that include a sham Reiki condition and larger sample sizes."I hope other researchers take note!Tags: cancer, fatigue, reiki, pilates, lynda lippin, caribbean, turks, caicos, turks and caicos, providenciales, energy, healing, fitness, exercise
The lives of people have become hectic and totally exhausted and there is no time left for concerning about one’s health. The most common problem faced by a majority of people is the problem of tiredness or what is generally called as ‘fatigue’. This problem is commonly faced in our day-to-day life.
The term ‘fatigue’ refers to a wide range of difficulties that gives rise to the condition of lethargy and laziness. Fatigue is also often described the individual’s inability to put efforts into an action. All of us face fatigue at some point of our lives and therefore, it is considered to be omnipresent at most of the times.
Fatigue has been described and divided into two main categories:
Central
Peripheral
The central fatigue is normally defined as the reduction in the motor command which is nerve based and neutral drive and thereby, resulting in a sudden decrease in the total force output of a human body. The peripheral fatigue can be understood in

Fatigue is a very common symptom of Multiple Sclerosis. The type of fatigue associated with MS is very different than simply being tired and worn out. MS fatigue muscle deep and affects both the entire body and brain. Your limbs may feel like way 2000 pounds all of a sudden. It may seem impossible to keep your eyes open and sometimes even hold your head up. Fatigue can have suddenly and without warning. You may feel fine an energetic one minute and completely exhausted the next.
While MS fatigue can't be treated or cured, it can be successfully managed. Most importantly, be sure to get enough sleep. You may find that you cannot stay up as late, or keep the same schedule as you did before multiple sclerosis. Listen to your body and adjust your schedule as necessary. Some people find it necessary to leave room in their schedules for a nap in the early afternoon. Many employers are open to this, as it can be considered a reasonable accommodation under ADA rules. However, to maintain
Fatigued lower limb muscles can inhibit the ability to control dynamic sports landing movements, increasing the risk of non-contact injury to the knee's anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), particularly among females. These are the key findings of a recent study of 10 female and 10 male NCAA athletes completed at Cleveland Clinic. The study published in the March issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, found that female athletes have a tendency to land with a more flexed ankle, the foot rolling outward with an elevated arch, more knee abduction and knee internal rotation compared to male athletes. The study also showed that fatigue caused significant increases in these same biomechanical measures. Importantly, the impact of fatigue on knee movements and loads was observed to be more pronounced in women, possibly explaining their greater risk of ACL injury during landing compared to men."Fatigue affects individuals differently. It’s quite natural for us to suffer from tiredness and fatigue after a hard day’s work. Sometimes this tired all-gone feeling persists even on arising after a night’s sleep and one feels so haggard and drained of energy that one finds it difficult to even get on with day-to-day work. Fatigue could be mental, due to a tired mind or physical due to tired muscles. Mental strain, frustration,
NEW Zealand fears an Australian ambush in the Bledisloe Cup Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground a week on Saturday, with Wallabies scrum half George Gregan identified as the danger man.
Former New Zealand captain Stu Wilson described Gregan yesterday as being critical to the Wallabies’ chances in both the Tri-Nations series and the Rugby World Cup in France later this year.
"I thought he was the form Australian halfback in the Super 14," Wilson said yesterday.
"He may not more…
Nelle Moriarty says she's grateful for new breast cancer drugs like Herceptin. But like most patients in cancer therapy, Moriarty, 55, says the medication often leaves her exhausted and struggling to concentrate. That's why Moriarty, a marriage-and-family therapist from Rochester, Minn., says she volunteered for a clinical trial about treating cancer-related fatigue in a new way: ginseng capsules.Ginseng has been used in Chinese medicine to promote health for 2,000 years. A National Cancer Institute survey in 2004 found that 36% of adults use ginseng or some other form of complementary or alternative medicine. But scientists have never before studied ginseng's potential to ease cancer fatigue in such a carefully controlled way, says lead author Debra Barton of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.Barton's research is one of a trio of studies, all financed by the cancer institute, on complementary and alternative cancer medicines presented Sunday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology
Jumpy and with a lot of things in mind can be stressful. Some go to the extent of being over-fatigued but yet would not know what to do. Many find it hard to sleep if they are in this stage. This may sound weird but the truth behind it is that people who are used to being hyperactive would tend to look for the various activities that would make them click.
Hence, once a person is free from doing anything and has his bed as the only object he sees, chances are he will not immediately go to sleep. A mixture of excitement and high adrenaline rush is still existent and chances are the person would still be looking for means to be doing something rather than lying back and resting his laurels.
In a way, sleep deprivation stems from over-fatigue. People just can’t believe that they have done so much. This development contributes to sleep deprivation because of its mental approach, something that people in the hyperactive life know all too well.

I am too stressed to post. English reading test today. I did all right, I suppose. Maths tomorrow. Brilliant.PS. The brilliant bit is meant to read ironically for those of you who didn't realise. Which you probably did. So if you did then ignore this PS. If you didn't, then I meant to mean the opposite of what I said, which was 'brilliant'. I don't mean that what I wrote was brilliant. It wasn't. Although, I did use that word. I meant. Actually, I can't remember. I think I'd better go to bed early tonight.

A new Quinnipiac Poll out today gives us at least a few interesting things to think about from the all-important state of Florida, both for the primary contests and the general election:1) Florida voters seem to be fatigued by the prospect of a McCain nomination. He garners only 15 percent of the GOP primary vote, loses to Edwards there 43-41, and only barely squeaks by Sen. Clinton 45-44. The only good news for McCain is that he is still favored over Obama there, 45-39, though that does not seem like much for someone who has spent as much time campaigning in Florida as McCain has, both for himself in 2000 and for Pres. Bush in 2004.2) Compare that to Giuliani, leading the GOP field with 35 percent, who handily beats both Clinton and Edwards 50-40 and Obama 52-36. That widens Rudy's lead over Hillary by 5 points since the same poll was conducted only a month ago. Also, Rudy's favorable/unfavorable rating in the state is a remarkably high 59-19. Here's a really touching story on ImmuneSupport.com about Rik Carlson, a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patient and 10-Year President of the Vermont CFIDS Association.
A few lines that stood out to me:I am President of the Vermont CFIDS Association, almost 10 years now, and I have been at the receiving end of an 800 number. Patients form support groups when conventional medicine fails. There's nowhere else to turn, but to find others. No one wants to do this, and to even imagine a group of CFIDS patients as "activists" is absurd. I have taken hundreds of calls - and over and over again I hear the same thing. "Do you know a good doctor? My doctor doesn't believe this to be real"...
You can't imagine what it's like to be so ill that you can barely stand, filling out a new-patient form in a doctor's office, and when you get to the part about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, watching the eyes roll at the other end. When that scene is repeated to
