Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo capturing that moment became a symbol of victory to a nation that had grown weary of war and made instant heroes of the six American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. But the surviving f

Bahamas: Men urged to return to their vital role as fathers, and embrace all the sons and daughters of the Bahamian community
Men urged to return to roles as fathers: By STAFF WRITER, Nassau Guardian - Nassau, Bahamas: Bahamas Faith Ministries Senior Pastor Dr. Myles Munroe is appealing to men to return to their vital role as fathers in our nation, and embrace not only their own children, but all the sons and daughters of our communities. His plea was made recently at the launching of the All-Pro Dad show, an international organization that focuses on restoring the value of fathers in family and nation- building. "The state of escalating crime, violent murders, depressing daily news from the courts, school fights, gang warfare and the still menacing drug use, are all cause of deep concern for all Bahamians," said Munroe. "The government, the church, civic groups and corporate organizations are all grappling

Five Decisions Expectant Fathers Tend to Avoid
Expectant fathers have a lot of decisions to make when getting ready for the arrival of their first or new child. Many people create checklists to try and help them prepare, but it is impossible to make ready for every situation or need. There are many decisions during the pregnancy that dads really care about expressing an opinion but some are avoided at all costs. Here are Five Decisions Expectant Fathers Tend to Avoid:1. Choice of doctor or hospital - we're not the ones who need to feel comfortable being poked, probed and examined, so why should our opinion matter?2. Room decor or bedding set - dads want kids to have cool rooms, but the only things we really care about when it comes to decor are how much it costs and the amount of work it will be for us to paint and set-up all of the fur

Not only was he naturally paranoid, but add on top that the laptop was a new Sony Vaio costing more than 2500 JDs, you have total mayhem."Who used my computer when I wasn't here?!" my dad bellows. Everyone looks at each other nervously. He later finds out that mum was using it to scan her papers. We start reading al-Fateha on my mum's soul. :DMy dad didn't stop there. He started searching the computer, only to find that Paypal's website had been opened a few minutes ago. And when it comes to the 2008 presidential election, the website has decided not to keep quiet — making a firm case for Ron Paul. Ron Paul, self proclaimed champion of the Constitution, is a 10-term congressman from Texas. According to the statistics provided on their website, 61 percent of the mentions of the Constitution at the 2008 presidential debates were made by Ron Paul himself, despite being a candidate that has not been given a fair amount of time to speak. Assuming 10 total candidates, 39 percent of the references to the Constitution would be divided among the nine other candidates. If the total number of references were to be split evenly across the rest of the candidates, each candidate would roughly only contribute to 4.3 percent of the Constit

      Founding Fathers – Sushruta:
All the hype surrounding plastic surgery makes it difficult to comprehend that this branch of medicine is actually steeped in ancient history. Roughly placed around the 6th B.C., plastic surgery had its roots in the need for new noses by criminals who had their noses amputated for misdemeanors.A practitioner of medicine named Sushruta devised a procedure which would give these people their noses back. He is held to be the first surgeon to perform a reconstructive rhinoplasty procedure by using skin from the forehead. He devised more than 15 methods to repair a damaged nose. Sushruta is also credited as the first doctor to have performed plastic surgery. The Sushruta Samhita or Sushruta’s compendium holds all his medicinal knowledge and is considered to be one of the cornerstones of Indian medical tradition. After continuous conquests the book traveled all over the Middle East and finally was noticed by a British surgeon in 1793 who went on to publish it a year later. What followed, le

      The Fathers Song
Wouldn't it be cool if life were set to music? You know what I mean, like in the movies. The moment you lean in for that first kiss, the Boston Philharmonic fades in with a beautiful string movement. What if every time you got in your car and rolled down the window, you heard Tom Petty singing, "Free Falling?" You would be a living, breathing episode of “Dawson's Creek.” How cool would that be? Okay, not so cool, Dawson's Creek was pretty lame. Not that I ever watched it. JHave you ever thought about what the soundtrack to your life would sound like? I know it seems dumb, but it's an interesting thought. Would your life sound like a mixture of the "William Tell Overture" and Incubus? What about a hybrid mix of Bruce Springsteen and Enya? Undoubtedly, each of us would have a unique list of artists on our album, because we're all so beautifully different.Sometimes I wonder if God sees and hears our lives set to music. Today as I was reading in the book of Revelations it struck m

The anniversary of the signing of our Constitution has just recently passed, yet it seems we do not celebrate that day and the people who gave us our rights to free speech, bear arms, etc. Not many people know a lot about how the Constitution was created, nor do they know all the people that were involved. This is an important event in our history and should be something we all remember and pass on. There is very little celebration of the passing of a date Sept. 17, 2007: the belated Birthday of the Signing of the Constitution. And the Federal Convention that ended its business on Sept. 17, 1787. Now she's trying a different route, waking me in the latest hours of the night to recap a dream that reads like a vampire / zombie / alien thriller."Whew!" she exclaimed a millisecond before she clung to my body, still waking from her nightmare. "Can you cuddle me?" She was already stuck to me like a barnacle, so yes honey, we can cuddle."What's wrong?" I asked."I just had the weirdest dream..." Fathers day - or more aptly entitled ‘Sunday’
Well Sunday was Fathers day, or as I like to call it Sunday. I wasn’t expecting much, and I wasn’t disappointed. My wife tried to explain the new concept of Fathers Day to Little Miss and made sure that there was a lovely card (the Wiggles make Fathers Day cards now by the way). Also there was a great hand made little box with a picture of Little Miss on it that she made at day care. Well she splashed some purple paint on it and one of the carers stuck her picture on the top. I am not sure what to do with it, but I do know it will take pride of place somewhere. The best thing about the box apart from the obvious love it was completed with was the unsmiling photo of my daughter on the top. It was one taken at daycare, and it is the most surly contemptuous look that I genuinely think I will ever see cross her face this side of the teenage years. The one thing though that was quite obvious was just how bored with the idea of Fathers Day Little Miss quickly became, once she reali

According to Thompson, Kennan "gave American strategy a name, but not much else" Also the article, "X" published in Foreign Affairs "sixty years ago this month" was basically "grounded in a misunderstanding. Joining A Fathers Support Group
FATHERHOOD is a tough job, especially when you are going through it alone. Work-at-home and single fathers especially, have a hard time finding like minded individuals to help them accomplish their paternal goals. One way to make new friends and get the advice you need to get through a difficult period in your fatherhood is to join a fathers support group. Generally, there are three main reasons fathers participate in these groups. 1. Support- Fathers who are recently widowed, divorced, or have gained custody of their children, and dads with children with disabilities are facing new challenges and seek support through a fathers group. 2. Friendship- Fathers who feel isolated or alone or have few or no friends who are fathers and want to be a better dad are looking to connect with other men and make friendships through a fathers group. 3. Fathers, Daughters, and Unknowns
Today, the day after the cards and ties and hugs have been exchanged, I'm still left feeling a little empty. Father's Day is now a difficult holiday for me to be jubilant about because now there are more questions than answers. When I was born, I had a father. Just one. As shitty as he was to me, he was my father and later on became the representation of what a man isn't supposed to be. Every Father's Day, I'd make him a construction paper card with all the love in the world, even though he showed much less than that love back to me. He usually wasn't around to get the cards, but my mom would take them and promise me that he'd get them. It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I found her collection of cards that she stashed away. The cards all had "Return to Sender" marked on them. At least she tried. Then my mom got remarried. My stepfather was and still is everything my father could never be. I understand now the meaning of a daddy's girl. That's me. He's my daddy, and many

Fathers Day, Fits, and Flying Fast On Your Bike
Hope all the dads that read this blog had a happy Fathers Day.  Bit of a reprieve here, we run the holiday/birthday gamut from December – June, so we’ve got a let up here for a few months.  No gift cards for at least the next few months.  Then it all begins again with Maya’s birthday on 12/05. We went to breakfast and then took in a lazy Sunday on our Fathers Day.  Demetrius and I put together a 3D puzzle of Spider Man (well, he helped until he got bored. I finished it. He looks better next to it in his room): Maya worked on accessorizing her flip-flops for a project they are doing at vacation bible school this week: And the kids gave me a gift card for Father’s Day (thanks Kim, I’ll take the hint that you are telling me I have a few honey-dos while you and the kids are in Kansas visiting Nana Joan and Poppy): I’m becoming a touch concerned about all these fits that Demetrius has started throwing.  They’ve been increasing, it seems, in frequency, and many of t

Paris Hilton shows her craft skills making a fathers day card
Paris Hilton made a special gift for her visiting dad Sunday – a Father’s Day card. Rick and Kathy Hilton arrived at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, Calif., in a chauffeured silver Chrysler just after 7 p.m. on Sunday. On their way in, Rick was asked if this was a particularly hard Father’s Day. “It’s not ideally my best,” he replied. Asked how he felt, he said: “I feel alright.” After a 45-minute visit, they emerged hand in hand, and Kathy told reporters that Paris is “doing well, she’s doing very well. She’s doing much better. She made [Rick] a beautiful Father’s Day card with his picture.” One reporter asked Rick if the visit was a positive one. “Yes,” he said. “It was.” Before they got into their car, Kathy was asked what her daughter was doing to pass the time. She quipped: “She looks at the four walls, and re

Fathers Day (by Holly Kay age 8)
My Dad is Great. My Dad is special to me because he helps me on the computer and plays soccer with me. Me and my sister are on a team and my Dad is by himself. Most of the time my Dad wins. At bed time my Dad chases my sister and I to bed. My Dad pulls out my loose teeth and I’m glad it does not hurt. One time my sister Hannah was siting on the couch and then her nose started to bleed so much it was dripping, then my Dad saw and said tip your head up* and hold your nose. That is why I love my Dad. My Life/ Fathers Day!
We had a very peaceful Father's Day. We went to Yogi Bear's campground just for the day and took the kid's swimming and then took my husband out for dinner and came home and got a lot of much needed yard work done. It amazes me how close my children are to their Dad. I never had that bond with my Dad growing up and it shows to this day that we are not close. My kids have so much with John. I was

      Fathers Day
Just last night, I had a look through my baby pictures out of boredom and found a whole bunch of them of me and my dad together. In all of them, we're smiling or laughing together. My favourite is one where I'm wearing a frilly dress and he's crouched down beside me and we're both laughing. With the background noise of my dad yelling at me while I sit in my room and study the picture, I wonder what happened between when the picture was taken and the present. Maybe there was something that allowed us to laugh together when I was two that is no longer there now that I've outgrown frilly dresses. I suppose there are moments when a part of that is still in our father-daughter relationship. Sometimes when he's the one cooking dinner instead of my mom and I just help out here and there with little things like flipping something over with the spatula or adding more salt. Its times like that when the kitchen is quiet in a soothing way with only the sounds of food cooking that I reall

Cuban Music trubute to Fathers (Papis)
Happy Father's Day I thought I'd pay a Cuban music tribute to fathers. Not as numerous as tributes to mothers (such is a father's lot in life), Cuban songs dedicated to fathers exist. This first one is only one that can be considered a proper tribute to fatherhood. It's Beny More singing to his father. Beny's father deserves some kind of recognition for fathering Beny and Beny's 17 siblings. You have to buy the Beny box if you want to own it. Grabaciones Completas 1953-1960 Listen The next two songs have "papa" in them, but they don't refer to any Earthly father, but a "Papa Boco" some kind of Santeria god that I couldn't find reference to at the time of writing. One is by some guy I don't know, but is on the same album as Celia Cruz. The other is by the great guajiro duo Celina y Reutilio. You must own both albums. Listen to Celina Listen to "Celia" Cantos de Cuba La Irresistible: 15 Top Hits 1946-1950 Introducing, for the first time of Cubanocast, El Gran Combo.

      A Tribute To Fathers
“A father’s calling is eternal, and its importance transcends time. It is a calling for both time and eternity. Harold B. Lee truly stated that, ‘the most important of the Lord’s work that you [fathers] will ever do will be the work you do within the walls of your own home.’ … “Your homes should be a haven of peace and joy for your family. Surely no child should fear his own father. A father’s duty is to make his home a place of happiness and joy. He cannot do this when there is bickering quarreling, contention, or unrighteous behavior. The powerful effect of righteous fathers in setting an example, disciplining and training, nurturing and loving is vital to the spiritual welfare of his children.” ~ Ezra Taft Benson I am so incredibly grateful for the righteous father that raised me and is still raising me. His patience, his many sacrifices, his endearing love and his Christlike example have all helped shape the person I have beco

On this Special Day I would like to pay a bit of Tribute to the Men in my life. First, My dad, at 80 years old he is still going Strong. A wonderful Gentleman, who has been married to my mother for a very loooooong time. The man who taught me that a Gentleman always opens the door for a lady. The man who played school with me when I was a kid. The man who went Trick r Treating for me because I fell off a Bike and was to hurt to walk. The man who tells the best stories every time, even though we would make him tell them over and over again. And the man who absolutely Loves and Cherishes my mother for all of these years. In memory of my Father In Law, who devoted his whole life to his Family. A Big man who Always had a Smile on his face. Who loved his family more than life. A man who worked 2 and 3 jobs at a time to put food on the table. And mostly a wonderful man who was the Best Role Model for his son.Than there are the two most important men in my Life. Fathers’ Day
Today is Fathers’ Day and as usual I haven’t got my Father anything for it. Yes, it’s miserly but I don’t generally subscribe to it as a rule. It’s just another excuse to give some money to Clinton cards, right? So I don’t bother. This bothers my parents somewhat. Each year I get a “You forgot father’s day” phone call. I usually reply with the “There’s a Son Day every week but what do I get from you?” sarcastic remark. Invariably they throw “Years of love and support” back into my face. Nice one. This year, my Mother said: “Have you remembered it’s Fathers’ Day next weekend?” “No” “Well, you will next year.” I fairly certain that I wont remember next year, but if I do I’m sure I’ll be guilt ridden for not sending my Dad a card or gift for however many years it’s been now. What I’m really hoping though is that Fatherhood is a reward

Happy Fathers Day I had to laugh this morning when I opened my Fathers day presents from my daughter. My daughter is just coming out of her teenage "Kevin" stage...what ever!!!!....and she has suddenly developed a sense of humour. I knew something was going on as she couldn't help smiling. I opened my first present and to my amusement and hers it was a Excess Nasal Hair and Eyebrow trimmer. At last I thought I have reached that age of protruding nasal hair and eyebrows that waft about in the wind. But at least now I can control them, as long as I remember not to insert the trimmer more than 6 inches or was that 6mm up my nose.I shall be wearing my Superdad T shirt and badge with pride today whilst I tuck in to my cake.To all dads enjoy the day.....

Have you heard the controversy over the "Dave Dinkle has two Moms" cartoon?I don't about Dave Dinkle, but if you asked Dora Dinkle how she felt about having two Dads, I can assure you she would go "Alright", "Cool" or something along that line.Although I understand the message of Dave Dinkle, and agree with it, I am really tired of all the male bashing. And if I have contributed to it with any of my little bitchy rants, let me take this Father's Day as an opportunity to apologize.Although, of course, there were long periods of time when we did not speak to each other, there is no one I admire or love more than my Dad. He is largely responsible for who I am today.I know most men, such as my Dad, don't like to get all gushy mushy--so let me just speak in generalities in your defense.First, men, and Dads in particular, should not need any defense. But sadly this is not the case. Why is it that men are the only group which it is now culturally acceptable to bash and ridicule?Although th

      Fathers as good role models
Father's Day is around the corner, and I wanted to salute the men who raised us. However, in my searches I found few examples of good fathers. My own, for instance, will stop anything he is doing to help any of his children any time of day. Nothing is too good for us. But he was also a stern man. Stern and loving and moral. Good dads like mine abound, but today's media doesn't seem to value them.I found plenty of evidence of bad daddies on the web, from Alec Baldwin to David Hasselhof to Woody Allen, who married his stepdaughter, to Ryan O'Neal, who mentally and physically abused his children and messed both up to the point where they publicly loathe him. Here is a funny write up of Shakespeare's worst father. I have seen Titus Andronicus, and this little synopsis is not far off the mark.suffice to say that the father character, Titus, isn't the best dad on the block. When one of his sons defies him and protects his sister (Titus' daughter) Lavinia, Titus kills his son (Mutius).

      Friendship Between Fathers And Daughters!!
Few of life's relationships compare to that of a father and daughter. From the first time she grasps his hand and says her first words, to the day she moves out on her own, the bond between them is ever evolving: dad goes from childhood hero, feared inspector of boyfriends, to the sage friend of adulthood. Daughters mature from perfect little angels into rebellious teens to accomplished women who are dad's pride and joy.Chicken Soup for the Father and Daughter Soul celebrates this special relationship with stories about childhood, the trying years of adolescence, the poignancy of leaving home and even the years when daughters often become caretakers. This is a beautiful book which would help understand and bond between the dads and their little girls even better. This could also be a wonderful gift from a daughter to a father on this Father’s Day. This book would surely serve to increase their communication, "saying" what may have gone unspoken over the years. Cheers to this special

      Fathers In America
ACCORDING to a Gallup Organization opinion poll called "Fathers in America", 79.1% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that "The most significant family, or social problem facing America is the physical absence of the father from the home". More than 1/3 of all children live absent from their biological fathers and that number continues to rise and compound itself. In a society where nearly 4 out of 10 first marriages end in divorce and 60% of divorcing couples have children, how do we even begin to reverse these numbers? Tougher divorce laws and better birth control education would be a good start, but will never reverse the numbers and only slow them down. I believe the only way to reverse the numbers is to start new trends and continue them for a sufficient amount of generations as to have them become the norm. The most important trend I can think of would be for fathers to well, be fathers. If we, as a society, can persuade fathers to maintain their roles regardless of their

The whole time I was growing up no one ever said anything about oil. No one ever said anything about foreign manufacturing. No one ever said anything about non-linear population growth. No one ever said anything about Topsoil. No one ever said anything about illegal aliens. No one ever said anything about preparation for anything that might come our way. No, the sad truth is that the boomers grew up in unprecedented wealth and security and blissfully burned more oil, energy, topsoil and whatever else you can regretfully burn than any generation since the beginning of known history. These are the assholes who told us to "get good grades" and everything will be awesome. Guess what dad, no amount of straight A's are going to help when the shit hits the fan. Fathers and Sons
We were out on the Ward Family farm yesterday visiting with my inlaws. I had the opportunity to take photos of John, his dad, and Cameron walking around discovering and pointing at everything from a little piece of rock to the Scottish Highland cows (which, by the way, Cameron calls bears, since they have so much hair -too bad I didn't get a picture). John and his dad are very close. So close, in fact, that they have the same profession (both lawyers), and they even work together. They have such a great relationship and I hope that Cameron and John will be the same way. I am very lucky to have a great husband who I know will nurture my children into hopefully becoming well adjusted adults. While looking at this last picture, I understood why one of John's clients asked him if Cameron was adopted. The Filipino genes must be pretty strong! I think he looks a lot like my dad. Papa, you are the missing piece to the puzzle. I wish we could see you more often but we're all very excited to

I went to see a movie and as it turns out, I neither saw the movie I intended to see nor did I see a movie but rather a four minute song stretched over two hours and eleven minutes. Let me explain. First, I intended to see The Queen, a movie that I feel is worth seeing but fails to generate the excitement necessary to do so. So when I arrived at the theater, any quality film being shown at roughly the same time would have been a temptation. As it turns out, it was Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers that lured me into a seat, popcorn in hand. The film was back in the theater as a companion piece to Letters from Iwo Jima, which finally was being screened in Aberdeen. Flags of Our Fathers is a solid movie, telling the story of the battle of Iwo Jima and the impact of the infamous photograph taken at the top of Mt. Suribachi. The basic message of the movie is that heroes are something that are created to help justify or give hope in the face of the atrocities of war. These myths that ar
