Modern Diet Farther and Farther from Nature, and Health
Adding more evidence to indicate that people are getting more and more removed from the natural world, healthy eating and any concept of exactly what food is made up of or how it's made, comes a new study out of the UK that shows 11-13 year old "tweens" often don't recognize common vegetables as common as carrots, celery, potatoes and cucumbers. I certainly don't blame the kids or their parents, h

The “Barack Obama Should Be Farther Ahead” Meme
The media loves to keep coming back to the idea that somehow Barack Obama is failing because he’s not way ahead in the polls.  Today’s example is The Politico’s front-page article titled Obama Stalls in Public Polling.  Yes, this is a close election.  But to suggest that Barack Obama is somehow a failed candidate because he has [...]

      Morocco: Farther South of France
In Morocco, an influx of French retirees transforms a historic port into a chic enclave El Jadida, Morocco, Once a sleepy seaside town, El Jadida is now transforming thanks in part to baby boomers like Muriel Brassier. The 61-year-old former publishing sales executive from the Bordeaux region had planned to retire in the south of France, but she and her husband last year realized they had far more

Being up on the Pedestal only makes it Farther to Fall
Having helped build the pedestal from which Peggy Petrilli fell, the Herald-Leader would like us to learn an object lesson from the whole affair. It's a lesson many school administrators tried to teach H-L from the start - only to have their motives questioned. But now, H-L would like us to chalk it all up to a life lesson. But whatever we do - don't blame Stu.I'm going to chat through this one, f

      Making meat go farther...
I have talked about the savings from once a month cooking and bulk cooking as I call it. Today I am making a HUGE batch of sloppy joes so we can have supper tonight and freeze seveal meals for the future. It is absolutely sickening to see how much things have gone up in the grocery stores. I always enjoy adding peppers/onions/etc to my meats to add flavor so I thought I would kick it up a notch and "water down" the expensive meat with cheap vegetables to make it go farther. I say cheap, but even veggies are getting expensive. The best part is that it offers even more flavor to the meat and insteaf of getting 6 meals, I should be able to get 9 or 10 meals out of it.5# tube of ground beef (80/20) - 9.982 hearts of celery chopped - 2.681 really large onion, chopped -1.003 green peppers choppe

      Farther South of France
These moves come as overall tourism to Morocco continues to grow. The improvements to these small towns give travelers on vacation a chance to take sidetrips to places that have a more laid-back pace than popular Fez and Marrakesh. But there are some drawbacks. Casablanca has been hit by terrorist bombings, including several this year. And as Morocco is a Muslim country, alcohol can be restricted in some places -- something to which wine-loving Europeans need to adapt when dining out.

PPI and Trade Balance Make EUR/USD Drop Farther
EUR/USD dropped to its new mid-term minimum (since 07/02/2007) at 1.3560, continuing its fall after the major currency intervention by European Central Bank, which took place yesterday to prevent a possible low liquidity on the financial markets of the European Union. Some good macroeconomic news released in U.S. added some fuel to dollar rally.Producer Price Index came out at 0.6% increase compared to 0.1% consensus value and -0.2% previous value. Core component of PPI was worse but not dramatically - 0.1% of growth compared to 0.2% in forecast.U.S. Trade Balance report showed some psychologically positive numbers. Unfortunately for the U.S. they are still mathematically negative, but nevertheless trade balance deficit continue to decrease. In June it was -$58.1 billions ($2.9B better than expected and $1.1B better than previous month).

      Going faster or going farther?
Foto: SAM:s arkiv /Jfa:: DAVID LIVINGSTONE went alone. Many missionaries went alone. Today partnership is vital in 21st century mission, says David Greenlee:MY FRIEND and I planned to meet last month at the airport train station. The good news was that my plane was early. The bad news was that my friend had not shown up. As I contemplated boarding the train we had intended to take, an African proverb came to mind: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." Speed isn´t everything, I decided, and went back for a last check at the ticket counter. My colleague, moved to a later flight and with no way to inform me, had just turned up. We ran and jumped on board our train just before the doors closed. Only after we had travelled some distance did I find out that my friend knew where we were supposed to go but was uncertain of what to do on arrival. We were both glad that I had waited! The farther we get from home the closer we get!!
Just having returned from a week in Jamaica thinking to escape one of my greatest passions about life insurance, diabetes, the more a I got whacked up side the head with the fact that it seems to epidemic everywhere. Turns out Jamaica has a real problem with juvenile type 2 diabetes. Kind of interesting since the normal contributing factors present in type 2 diabetes really aren’t readily apparent in the Jamaican culture. Turns out the childhood obesity is the culprit, not unlike the US. Just not something one would expect. Bottom line. Anyone, Jamaican or otherwise, who slips into bad eating and exercise habits can put themselves at risk for diabetes. As with coronary artery disease, the additional stress on the body can cause collateral health issues. Then we’re back to talking about how to do all the right things, not just to take care of yourself, but also to find affordable life insurance. Remember, all the information you can possibly get is not too much when you visi

The Faster I Read, the Farther Behind I Get
These seem to have accumulated here in just the last two or three weeks. The bottom two are collections of Patricia Highsmith short stories that I picked up on eBay and, from what I can tell, they have most or all of the short stories she wrote. I bought several of these at my local Half-Price Books store for a buck a piece (the Willie Morris book, the Updike one and the two at the top of the stack) and the others came from the Barnes & Noble bargain shelves. So I haven't spent a fortune on these...how was I supposed to resist so many books for so little money? If the titles are difficult for you to read, just click on the picture for a much larger version of it.

The big question on everyones mind is - "Can Kramnik recover?" Kramnik has at times proved himself to be as sensitive a player as Anand.
