I KNEW IT! I knew that there was only one reason that Mike and Jerry were going to hold a press conference together after convocation!Press Release: Mike Huckabee Receives Personal Endorsement of Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr November 28, 2007 Lynchburg, VA – Former Arkansas Governor and Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee announced the personal endorsement of Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. Falwell is the son of the late Jerry Falwell, founder of Liberty University and Falwell Ministries."I knew Jerry's dad for more than 30 years and have admired the long tradition of Liberty University and the legacy for creating 'Champions for Christ'," Huckabee said. "Dr. Falwell's vision of helping students to start with nothing to believe they can change the world is exactly what our campaign is all about."Jerry Falwell, Jr. graduated from Liberty University and later obtained his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. Just when you thought that the death of Christian extremist Jerry Falwell might bring some temporary relief, we have news out of Virginia that there is another Falwell at the ready to take up Jerry's legacy. According to this editorial by Elizabeth Strother in The Roanoke Times, Falwell's son, Jonathan, has taken over his father's Thomas Road Baptist Church and is now hoping to mobilize voters around "family values."Jonathan Falwell does not seem ready for nationwide efforts just yet, but there appears to be little question about his aspirations to do so eventually. So far, son Jonathan's sights are set more modestly, on Virginia, where every seat in the General Assembly is up for election in November. But, like his father, he'd like to make his family values your family values -- by law. And, like religious leaders on both the political left and right, he has to try to do it without risking the tax-exempt status of his church.Strother has an excellent suggestion for those of us wh
Did I ever mention the time I ran into Jerry Falwell in LA International? It was a brief encounter, but long enough for me to tell him he was a fuck face.Well, not in so many words. After all I am a nice girl. But I suppose it is not nice to speak ill of the dead. At least that is what the nuns taught us. But I bring him up cos there is something bothering me.And he is in hell anyway.Besides, at the risk of offending those who invariably arise to decry those who take pleasure in the death of a fellow human being, I think it fair to say the world is a better place with Jerry Falwell no longer a part of it.He went out the same way he lived--fat and disgusting. The Reverend Falwell believed I am condemned to eternal damnation cos I am gay. And since he never saw how the tweenie me gravitated so naturally toward beating off to a young nubile Kelly Ripa, maybe he really never got it.I know there are four or five passages in the Bible which condemn homosexuality. From ABC News:Student Arrested With Homemade Bombs, Three Other Suspects Sought May 22, 2007 — Even in death, the Rev. Jerry Falwell rouses the most volatile of emotions. A small group of protesters gathered near the funeral services to criticize the man who mobilized Christian evangelicals and made them a major force in American politics -- often by playing on social prejudices. A group of students from Falwell's Liberty University staged a counter protest. And Campbell County authorities arrested a Liberty University student for having several homemade bombs in his car. The student, 19-year-old Mark D. Uhl of Amissville, Va., reportedly told authorities that he was making the bombs to stop protesters from disrupting the funeral service. The devices were made of a combination of gasoline and detergent, a law enforcement official told ABC News' Pierre Thomas. They were "slow burn," according to the official, and would not have been very destructive. moreTo stop protesters
Thousands Turn Out for Falwell FuneralBy SUE LINDSEYThe Associated PressTuesday, May 22, 2007; 2:35 PMLYNCHBURG, Va. -- Thousands of mourners attended the funeral Tuesday of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, the folksy evangelist who built the Moral Majority into a conservative Christian empire that influenced national politics. The funeral returns Falwell to his roots _ the Thomas Road Baptist Church, where he started as a young preacher in 1956 with just 35 parishioners in an old abandoned soda bottling plant.Today, his son Jonathan Falwell leads Thomas Road Baptist, and the sanctuary seats 6,000.More than an hour before the service, crowds were being directed to overflow seating in Liberty University's 10,000-seat basketball arena and its football stadium. According to Christian Newswire, President Bush had the following to say about the death of Jerry Falwell:Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of Jerry Falwell, a man who cherished faith, family, and freedom. As the founder of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jerry lived a life of faith and called upon men and women of all backgrounds to believe in God and serve their communities. One of his lasting contributions was the establishment of Liberty University, where he taught young people to remain true to their convictions and rely upon God’s word throughout each stage of their lives. Falwell "cherished faith, family, and freedom," did he? I'm not so sure about family or freedom. He certainly didn't seem to think too highly of women or homosexuals. I clearly valued his own freedom to spread hatred, but I'm not sure if that is particularly praiseworthy. It sounds like we are supposed to applaud him, regardless of what he did or said, because he cloaked him
I haven’t written much in way of an update in a while and mainly it is due to anxiety and depression issues rearing their ugly heads yet again. The main effect is that I am not sleeping through the night, even if I take a sleep aid. I wake up repeatedly all night long and when my alarm goes off (all too early) I am quite simply emotionally physically and spiritually weary. Additionally I am feeling overwhelmed and overworked and pulled in a few too many directions and am moody and irritable as a result.
Mr. Grumpy (aka The PopPop aka My Dad) has been …. well …. particularly grumpy lately. GamerDude has been in a lot of pain due to coming complely off his daily pain med regimin and as of last night has developed some kind of stomach virus just for shits and giggles. SAN FRANCISCO -- About a dozen people gathered in the Castro District Tuesday evening to mark the death of Jerry Falwell.
Falwell, the folksy, small-town preacher who used the power of television to found the Moral Majority and turn the Christian right into a mighty force in American politics during the Reagan years, died Tuesday at 73.
Michael Petrelis organized the so-called "anti-memorial"
The Rev. Jerry Falwell’s death will elicit scores of eulogies on the good the televangelist did, even while acknowledging some hurtful actions, such as blaming gays and civil libertarians for 9/11. But there is another little-known chapter of Falwell’s career: his collaboration with a Korean cult leader bent on transforming the United States into a theocracy.

The nuns taught me never to speak ill of the dead, so originally I thought it best to remain silent on this one.But to be honest, and at the risk of offending those who invariably arise to decry those who take pleasure in the death of a fellow human being, I think it fair to say the world is a better place with Jerry Falwell no longer a part of it.He went out the same way he lived--fat and disgusting.Perhaps God finally got tired of having the guy speak for him. Some of Falwell's more thought provoking ideas:"AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals."And the 9-11 attach was the avenging hand of the Lord on America:"Feminists…gays, lesbians, the ACLU and People for American Way helped this happen."Actually, if circumstances had been a little different, Osama bin Laden and Falwell could have been good buds. They are actually soul mates.Let us pause and listen to this man of the Lord:Couldn't you just hear J

Founder Of Moral Majority DiesNote: While being sympathetic "abstractly" to a few of Rev. Falwell's issues and causes, we could never support him as Christians because of his heretical views. Falwell and supporters failed to realize they were just as dangerous as those groups he opposed.Jerry Falwell was ordained a Baptist minister in 1956. He immediately started his own church, the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he was pastor until his death. He began telecasting his weekly sermons in 1968. In 1971, he founded Lynchburg Baptist College, later called Liberty University.Born and raised in America's segregated South, Falwell preached that racial segregation was the Lord's will, but dropped such overt racism from his perspective when it became unpopular to say such things aloud. Still, from his pulpit Falwell supported South African apartheid, and opposed Nelson Mandela's release from prison. In 1979, Falwell was a founder of the Moral Majority, a political ac

Memorable Moments in Video History: Flynt and Falwell Face-Off, 1983Nearly a quarter of a century ago, founder of Hustler magazine and one of American celebrity culture's most colorful characters ever, Larry Flynt, turned a courtroom into his own twisted mini-circus as clearly seen in this unusual videotaped deposition. The deposition was ordered after Rev. Jerry Falwell, who died Tuesday, filed a lawsuit against Flynt for libel in 1983.Flynt appears on the video in a hospital bed because of the paralysis he suffered from an assassin’s bullet a few years before. Flynt openly mocks the legal proceedings during the deposition, repeatedly answering "no" to the common swearing in: “do you swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” Flynt refused to answer "yes". A number of times during the video deposition, Flynt, who appears medicated, stares and smirks at Falwell (who is off-camera). He also claimed to be just about everyone - from Christopher Columb
Kurt Vonnegut and Jerry Falwell, such two diverse minds leaving this mortal coil. Though misguided, I can appreciate what Jerry wanted to do. He wanted a pure and Godly world. Though it was shaped in his own image and not per se God's.
I was shocked and saddened to hear today about the passing of Jerry Falwell. My prayers go out on behalf of Rev. Falwell's family, his church congregation at Thomas Road, and the Liberty University community. I had the chance to meet Jerry several years ago, and he struck me as a warm and caring individual who loved God and loved helping young people. I know scores of pastors and people involved in music who are doing great works and who got their start at Liberty University. He opened up the doors for Third Day to play at Liberty more times than I can count, and for that I am grateful. Yes, he was very outspoken, and yes, I often found myself throwing my hands up in the air as a result, but I know that his ultimate motive was to tell people about Jesus, even if I might have disagreed with the politics or the technique or the tone. I'm sure there will be much debate in blog circles about Falwell, but as a Christian, I mourn the loss of a brother in Christ and a mighty man of Go
Today Jerry Falwell, founder of Moral Majority, died at age 73. I'm not going to publically cheer his death, but I will be frank about my feelings on this. In the 1980's Falwell was the face of the Christian Conservative movement. That mantle has since passed to people like James Dobson, but, in his time, Falwell did more to hurt America's civil liberties than anyone else. With his insistence on mixing fundamental Christianity with politics and his demonization of entire segments of society, Falwell's crusade seriously undermined the Constitution, tried to return our society to the Middle Ages, and helped spread "acceptable" forms of hate through his homophobia and dislike for non-Christians. I don't wish death on anyone. I know this life we have is the only one we've got, so everyone's time on Earth is precious. However, I will certainly not miss Falwell and America is better off without him. Good riddance.Black Sun Journal has more on what Falwell did to harm America.
I remember watching him in the early eighties and finding his anti-communism and pro-traditional values interesting. He avoided personal scandal and I'm sure he was sincere in his beliefs and a nice man. I won't say that I agree with everything he said, especially his reported exaggerations on homosexuals; his always unwise, mostly off-putting, and often dumb, apocalyptic prognostications; and the assigning of blame for disasters, specific diseases, and such on God's anger.
Anyways, he said some things that made sense and saw the cultural situation as one would see a war, connecting the dots between the anti-Christian beliefs, the left, and politics. Oh, and he was right about Tinky Winky.
“AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”“If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being”“God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve”“[homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.”“I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'”Rest in peace Jerry Falwell. May you not be judged as harshly in heaven as you judged your fellow man here on earth.
The world is definitely better off without an obese, self-loving, fanatic right-wing asshole. Go to hell, fat bastard !!!Good riddance. Enough said !!!And before you flare up and call me names, here are some of the knowledgeable thoughts this asshole has given the world: (thanks to my friend Jason Buckley for this list)" If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being." "I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!" "The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." "AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals."I dont really see the difference between Osama bin Laden and a person like Jerry Falwell.By the way, here's a list of some peopl

So says CNN. One of the most recognizeable, controversial, and influential evangelical Christians of our time, Jerry Falwell played a large role in the mobilization of modern Christianity towards political efforts. In other words, he made religion a political platform.
We at The Southern Baptist Academy would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Falwell family as well as to the larger family of Christians in Lynchburg, VA. He was surely a well-loved and highly admired man.
He was not admired by all, largely due to his steadfast devotion to traditional family values and outspoken criticism of the moral relativism of the Left. Rev. Falwell has surely made his mark on modern American Christianity. As such, it has been said that he was a lightening rod for his beliefs. May we all express the same moral steadfastness that this great church leader showed throughout life.
Tammy Faye Messner, who with her ex-husband Jim Bakker fell from grace in a church-money scandal, will be interviewed on CNN's "Larry King Live" tonight about the death of fellow televangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell, according to CNN.
Messner announced last week on her Web site, TammyFaye.com, that doctors have stopped treating her cancer and her weight has dropped to 65 pounds.

Breaking news on the internet is that Jerry Falwell has passed away, aged 73. Falwell stood for everything that I despise about religious dogma and bigotry, but there will be plenty of other occasions to talk about that. Human life is the most treasured possession we have, and I cannot revel in this news. My heart goes out to his friends and family.
The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the face of the religious right since the 1980's has died. While I vehemently disagreed with his politics, and did not have a very positive opinion of him, a man, who for better or worse, was an inspiration to millions had died.He deserves to be mourned.

Christian ministers have a knack for getting into the headlines.
Rev. Jerry Falwell is claiming that global warming is a tool of Satan being used to distract Christians from their real purpose, saving souls. Falwell doesn’t seem to understand that if mankind ceases to exist, there will be no souls to save.
I still believe there is reason to doubt the idea that humans are responsible for global warming, but the notion that the church is now suddenly becoming “distracted” is laughable. Especially from this man.
This is a man who has spent his career as a minister, not on the subject of worshipping God, but on the immorality of abortion and homosexuality. It’s ridiculous to suggest that now the church is becoming distracted…and on something that could potentially end mankind.
And I obviously see the error in taking something said by Rev. Falwell seriously, but it is symptomatic of the attitude that many evangelicals have. It’s this obsession with k
I was bored tonight, and came across this test that supposedly would tell me what kind of Christian I am. And as it turns out, I am a Jerry Falwell.
