The Falcons wasted no time in signing rookie QB and top draft pick Matt Ryan to a 6 year contract worth a maximum of 72 million.Ryan will get a lot of extra time to learn the offense by avoiding a hold-out. He's certainly a long-shot to have any significant fantasy impact this year. QB's rarely produce in there first year. But signing early should give him a greater opportunity to take over as the

After a miserable last year that was mired in controversy of many types, the Atlanta Falcons are looking to rebuild their team. New head coach Mike Smith looked over this weeks mini camp with eager anticipation to see signs of what his new team might be able to deliver. Though some of the faces might be familiar to Smith, this was the first time he saw some of them as their head coach. Among the veterans that could top anyone's nfl picks were Keith Brooking, Joe Horn, D.J. Shockley, and Michael Turner. In addition to these battle (both media and gridiron) tested veterans, all eyes will turn to the Draft Day live feed from Falcons' Training Camp in Flowery Branch, Georgia on April 26th. The Falcons have one first round pick, number three overall, and three second round

Man is it bad to be a Falcons fan.I just submitted a column to The Bleacher Report about Parcells going to Miami. You can read it here: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/5093-NFL-Miami_Dolphins-Atlanta_Falcons-The_Return_of_the_Big_Tuna-191207The Falcons can't buy a break.
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that former New York Jets head coach and general manager Bill Parcells has talked with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins about a job for the 2008 season. It’s assumed that Parcells wants to take a front-office job rather than a head coaching gig.
Update 12:35 a.m. - Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com is reporting that Falcons owner Arthur Blank has put a ‘full-court press’ on Bill Parcells to become the team’s vice president of football operations. According to the report, Parcells is giving the job serious consideration and would be in charge of hiring the team’s next head coach. He could accept the job as early as Wednesday.
…Well, I was pondering the idea of seeing Parcells back with Gang Green in a front office role, but it doesn’t appear likely. Just keep him out of Miami, that’s all I am saying…
Update 5:43 p.m. - The Miami Herald is now reporting that Parcells is the final stages of a cont
The NFL fined Roddy White and four other Atlanta Falcons players for violating uniform regulations with tributes to Michael Vick during the team’s loss to the New Orleans Saints on December 10, 2007.
Cornerbacks DeAngelo Hall and Chris Houston, wide receiver Roddy White and tight end Alge Crumpler each were fined $10,000. Wide receiver Joe Horn was fined $7,500.
Crumpler, Hall and Houston wore black eye strips with the message “MV-7,” Vick’s initials and uniform number, which the league called “displaying an unauthorized personal message.”
After scoring a touchdown, White pulled up his jersey, with help from Horn, to unveil a “Free Mike Vick” T-shirt.

ATLANTA — Bobby Petrino resigned as Atlanta Falcons coach on Tuesday, having lasted only 13 games with the NFL team. A person within the league told The Associated Press that Petrino quit to return to the college ranks at Arkansas. Reported by Associated Press, ESPN
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Bobby Petrino's flirtation with the NFL did not even last one full season.Petrino on Tuesday resigned as coach of the Atlanta Falcons just 13 games into his inaugural rocky season with the franchise. The Falcons announced Petrino's resignation on their web site and said the club would have no further comment until a news conference at 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday. The former Louisville coach is leaving the Falcons to take the head coaching job at Arkansas, according to a report by ESPN.Citing sources close to the negotiations, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported on its web site that Petrino could be paid close to US$3 million per season to replace Houston Nutt at Arkansas. The stunning departure comes one day after Falcons owner Arthur Blank told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he was assured by Petrino that he would be back for his second season with the team."I feel real fortunate that we have a terrific guy leading our football team," Blank said on Monday. You know what, this guy came off as a moralist, and someone who was obviously wronged after showing faith in Michael Vick. Now, he might have shown who he truly is...This is sick, and makes me wonder as much as society has changed -- has it?The words of Arthur Blank on Monday Night Football and the possibility of his return to the NFL...And to think, SOME PEOPLE felt sorry for you...I have no idea if he was stressed out, joking, or just wanted to say what was on his mind, but as a CEO of a major company, and a public figure in a city with a high and affluent minority population, Blank should have used more tact with his words.I have only heard good things about Arthur Blank, but what he said, as a minority was out of line - joke or not.
The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys won yesterday, setting up a meeting of 10-1 teams for the top spot in the National Football Conference. Brett Favre passed for 381 yards and three touchdowns as the Packers beat the Detroit Lions 37-26 for their sixth consecutive victory. Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes to help the Cowboys to a 34-3 win over the New York Jets, their fifth straight victory.
For the past few weeks the champion Indy Colts had not been playing up to the level we had been use to seeing from them. Thanksgiving night, the team once again looked sluggish at the start, falling behind 10-0 to the lowly Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome. From there though, Peyton Manning and the Colts D took over, and just like that the team seemed to return to form in a 31-13 win.
The Colts have and still are suffering from plenty of injuries, but Thursday night in Atlanta they got back one big piece of the offense, wide out Anthony Gonzalez. He was Manning’s favorite target, catching 105 yards worth of passes. Reggie Wayne had six catches for the now 9-2 Colts for 104 yards and a score.
The Falcons seemed to be playing inspired ball, scoring on their opening drive with a Morten Anderson 34-yard field goal and then QB Joey Harrington hit Roddy White with a 48-yard scoring pass to make it 10-0 in the first quarter. For the fans of the now 3-8 Falcons, that would be about
Although both teams have denied any connection to him, a personal trainer in the Dallas area who shipped performance-enhancing drugs said he had ties to players on the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. David Jacobs pleaded guilty in United States District Court, signing a statement in which he said he was responsible for distributing 40 thousand units of anabolic steroids and several thousand units of human growth hormone.
The 1-5 Falcons have finally pulled the switch on quarterback Joey Harrington, and are going with Plan B on Sunday with former Jags signal caller Byron Leftwich at New Orleans. Harrington was actually showing some signs of progress after the team topped the Texans three weeks ago, but then they stumbled bad to the Titans on the road, and then laid an even bigger egg at home Monday night to the Giants, losing 31-10.
As far as the numbers put up by Harrington, he had a QB rating of 80.3, but had thrown for just four TD’s in six games, going along with four interceptions. He has thrown for 1279 yards, and was sacked 21 times and was on pace to get sacked a total of 56 times this year. While the O-line was at fault plenty for Harrington’s sacks, the QB also held onto the ball way too long on some plays, allowing D-lineman and linebackers to get to him with ease.
“I brought them both in early this morning and met with them,” coach Bobby Petrino said. “I wan
Monday night 5 buddies and I went to the Falcons Giants Monday night football game. We had a blast, can you say $5 - 32oz beers. I knew that you could or at least we sure did like "3" times before the game started. The best thing to happen on the field was this...
I took this with my 2-year-old MDA cellphone from my season tickets seats that are on the third level. Not to bad.
I just wanted to drop a quick post about the Giants-Falcons Monday Night Football game. The Giants won, 31-10, but let's face it - it's the Falcons!Anyone can see that the Giants are improving as a team. Replacing Tom Coughlin as a coach, as many fans still want, would be a huge mistake considering the relationship he has built with the players. But they do need to improve...There were a lot of dropped passes by Atlanta tonight that could have lead to some touchdowns. Had these passes not been dropped, who knows how the game would have turned out. There were also a few false start penalties, which the Giants always seem to struggle with.As for Atlanta, what's up with the fans? For a Monday Night game, that stadium wasn't even close to being full. By the end of the third quarter - when the Falcons still had a chance to win the game - the stadium was nearly empty! Those that remained for the entire game were mainly Giants' fans. Many of them had moved down to the lower rows. Listeni
It's a little after 11:00 PM as I write this, and the Falcons are, barring some kind of freak act of God, on track to lose tonight. Most people probably turned off their television sets at least thirty minutes ago, and the Falcons' 15 minutes in the spotlight are over. Of course, the Falcons have received all kinds of media attention this year, and for all the wrong reasons. Why do I put myself through this misery? It's a long story.
This article does a great job of catching you up on the history of the franchise, but it misses out on the whole picture. Unlike a downright terrible team, the Falcons have been one of those programs that give you just enough to keep you watching. And off the field, there it lies: the drama. There are the obvious good guys. Steve Bartkowski, Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, Jamal Anderson, Warrick Dunn. Then there are the villains like Eugene Robinson, and of course, Michael Vick. And then there's the downright odd. Jerry Glanville, who used
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Five games into the post-Michael Vick era, the Atlanta Falcons already have a quarterback controversy and plenty of grumbling players. Rookie coach Bobby Petrino insisted Monday that Joey Harrington is still the No. 1 quarterback, but former Jacksonville starter Byron Leftwich is waiting in the wings for his chance to lead the struggling team. Harrington was yanked early in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss at Tennessee after completing 16 of 31 passes more…
The Atlanta Falcons want a little more than 16 million of the 37 million dollars in bonuses they have already paid suspended quarterback Michael Vick. The case is supposed to be argued at a hearing on Thursday in front of NFL’s special master, University of Pennsylvania Law School professor Stephen Burbank. The Falcons contend that [...]
Last weekend Falcons corner back DeAngelo Hall was burned for 67 yards of penalties on one series, then fined $100,00 by the team for his actions in regard to the two personal fouls he got on the drive. Now Hall according to sources has had it with the Falcons, and last week two sources said that Hall asked Atlanta to trade him. The Falcons, in the midst of a 1-3 start, will not be doing so, drawing the displeasure of Hall.
“He’s going to play out the season and see what happens,” said a source close to Hall on Yahoo Sports. “He’s not happy, but he’ll calm down and see how things are. I would expect some teams will be asking about him, but the Falcons said they won’t trade him.” Hall has been upset with how the Falcons have handled situations in regard to Michael Vick as well as how the team has tanked the last few seasons since going to the NFC Title game in 2005.
Known a top corner around the league, Hall was beat up by the media and
In what should bring closure to what was an ugly episode during the Atlanta Falcons-Carolina Panthers game last week, Len Pasquarelli of ESPN reports that Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall will not be suspended but will be levied what is described as a “substantial” fine by the club for his actions during the Falcons-Panthers game last Sunday.
Sources close to the situation say that the fine will be less than an entire gamecheck, but will be in the low-100K range. The decision on the fine came after deliberation by Falcons officials, the Management Council and a group of veteran Falcons players. It is assumed that a suspension was discussed in these meetings with the parties involved. One may assume that the Falcons, in order to not be perceived as being hard-cases, wanted to penalize Hall enough to send a message that had teeth to it, but not strident enough for the penalty to be overturned by an arbitrator.
The episode started with the Falcons leading the Panthers 17-10
The Atlanta Falcons signed former Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich on Tuesday, giving the team immediate depth and a potential contender for the starting job. Leftwich’s agent, Tom Condon, said the former first-round draft pick passed a physical, worked out for the team and signed a two-year, $7 million deal. The 27-year-old Leftwich is set to join the Falcons for Wednesday’s practice. The deal was first reported by FOXSports.com’s Jay Glazer.
I admitted last Sunday that I think that my Dolphins are the worst team in football. The reality of it hurts, much like a prostate exam from this fine gentleman, but this team sucks some big goat testicles right now. Well, after giving it some thought, I'll go out on a limb and say that the Dolphins are not the absolute worst team out there right now.Minnesota tried Brooks Bollinger on Sunday, meaning that they should be banned to the Arena League. The Chiefs are a hazzard to everyone's eye sight, as is J.P. Losman and the Bills...but there's one team that's really shitting themselves uncontrollably. You guessed it, Peter King's fantasy team the Atlanta Falcons....In the first two games, Miami has at least scored a combined 33 points. Atlanta's woeful offense has managed just 10 points and I don't think we can be surprised since Joey Harrington is lining up back there. The Falcons have realized that they probably need to score double digits in a game at some point this season an
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired cornerback-kick returner Allen Rossum from the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday for a conditional 2008 draft pick. Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl player as a return specialist, holds Falcons team records for kickoff and punt return yards and also had two punt return touchdowns. The former Notre Dame player broke into the NFL as a third-round pick with Philadelphia in 1998 before being traded to Green Bay in 2000. He signed with Atlanta as a free agent in more…

Despite what appears to be obvious to everyone else, the Altanta Falcons do not seem overly concerned about finding themselves a quarterback to challenge current starter Joey Harrington, or to at least provide insurance for when/if Harrington has a meltdown playing full-time for the Falcons. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Falcons are confident in what they have seen from Harrington, enough so that they have yet to pull the trigger on making a move. Many felt they were in the running for quarterback Kelly Holcomb, who the Eagles traded to the Vikings on Monday.
For now, the names being floated around as possible QB’s that might join the team at some point include Andrew Walter from the Raiders, Anthony Wright from the Giants, or possibly Mark Brunell from Washington. If any of those three get cut by their current teams, the Falcons would take a look. For now though, it appears it’s Harrington’s ship to steer. “As a quarterback, ye

Just when you thought that the Michael Vick case was in its final stages, one more person decides to put in their two cents. And that person is - and probably a surprise to no one - the Falcons quarterback’s mother. As reported by James Fanelli of the New York Post, Brenda Vick, Vick’s mother, told the Post, “I gotta be strong for him. It is tough on everybody. They are trying to put my baby in jail, and for what?” Ms. Vick, I do not know where you get your information from, but last time I checked, Michael was facing prison time for actually being involved in dogfighting, which is illegal.
Ms. Vick further added, “Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody deserves a second chance. He has given his life over to God. He is not a criminal . . . He’s a good person. He has a big heart, and it just hurts.” Again Ms. Vick, I am thinking that you’ve been terribly misinformed. Michael is indeed a criminal despite what you th
RB Jerious Norwood suffered a stomach injury and could miss a much of the remaining preseason. With Warrick Dunn rehabilitating from back surgery, the Falcons are already thin at running back. Rookie Jason Snelling, a combination fullback/tailback, will get a good look. Also, Justin Vincent will get an opportunity. Reported by D. Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sporting News

This is bad news for Norwood who was running away with the starting job with Dunn side lined with an injury. Now Dunn is back in practice and will have the remaining 2 games to prove he’s still the man.
The Atlanta Falcons are in the market for a quarterback, knowing that the 2007 season is in flux with no Michael Vick, and the number one QB right now being Joey Harrington. The team has been actively looking at the market, and there are a few QB’s out there that have their interest depending on the route the team that they are on right now takes with them. The first is the situation in Oakland, where the Raiders suddenly appear to be leaning towards making Daunte Culpepper their starter opening day vs the Lions.
If Culpepper does make it all the way back as the teams starter, they will sit with Andrew Walter and Josh McCown on the bench as the second and third QB’s. One problem, they still have JaMarcus Russell waiting in the wings whenever he and the team can finally make a deal. This means that Walter or McCown will be gone, and the Falcons will have great interest in either one. Sources say that the Raiders quietly wanted McCown to win the QB battle in camp,
As the saying goes, “Crime does not pay”. In Falcons quarterback Michael Vick’s case, you can also add, “The Falcons, NFL, and corporate sponsors giveth and they also will take away”, so to speak. According to Gary Myers of The New York Daily News, Vick’s role in the illegal dogfighting scandal could cost him upwards of $100 million in present and future earnings. This doesn’t include the major blow to his reputation and image. Here’s the breakdown on his losses:
$71 million in base salary (remainder of his current Falcons contract)
$25 million in bonus repayment to the team
$3-5 million in endorsement income annually.
Now the specifics:
Default language in Vick’s contract allows the Falcons to recoup any and all signing bonuses agreed upon; it allows the team to recoup a prorated share should Vick be suspended by the league for violating any of the NFL’s policies (Substance Abuse, Steroids, Personal Condu
The news is coming in that Mike Vick will plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges, meaning that he's definitely looking at jail time right now. "After consulting with his family over the weekend, Michael Vick asked that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors regarding the charges pending against him," lead defense attorney Billy Martin said in a statement."Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter."So yes, Vick is literally and figuratively screwed now as he'll learn a different meaning for the term "quarterback scramble". But this has made me think what a rough couple of months it has been for Falcons quarterbacks.Matt SchaubSchaub had been rotting away on Atlanta's bench, hearing from everyone around him that he should be a starter somewhere in the NFL a
Things just got a little bit more unsettling for the Atlanta Falcons and especially team owner Arthur Blank. Before Friday night’s game between the Falcons and the Buffalo Bills, Blank would not specifically address what his intentions are towards embattled quarterback Michael Vick, telling Steve Wyche of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “As facts come out, we will absorb the facts, study the facts, research them and then we’ll move very decisively. Today’s developments are very distressing.”
Also troubling Blank was the fact that Virginia Commonwealth Attorney Gerald Poindexter declared that he intends to pursue state charges against Vick and possibly others for allegedly staging dogfights and executing dogs on Vick’s property in Surry County, VA. Blank’s next statement, at least to me, tells me something more about him than Michael Vick: ”You think you know somebody for six years and you find out another side of thei
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Falcons owner Arthur Blank accused Michael Vick of lying to him and the NFL after one of the NFL star’s co-defendants said Friday that the quarterback took part in drowning and hanging dogs that didn’t perform well. “What’s suggested in those statements of fact don’t match up with what the league was told, even our organization and certainly not what was said to the commissioner,” Blank told the Associated Press before Atlanta’s preseason game against Buffalo. more…

The New York Jets defeated the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 31 to 16.
Quarterbacks:
Chad Pennington started off the game and played the first two drives without attempting a pass. Kellen Clemens followed and was undoubtedly the MVP of the game after completing 16 of 22 passes for 174 yards and throwing 3 touchdowns. Clemens showed what he was made of and knew it was a big game for him. Throughout preseason, he has to prove that he is capable of being the backup to Chad Pennington. Brad Smith saw a drive at quarterback, but did not look too comfortable. Smith rushed under pressure and only attempted one pass. Marques Tuiasosopo came into the game with roughly six minutes left in the game and had a three and out.
Runningbacks:
Thomas Jones started the game and that’s about all you saw on the first two drives. Chad Pennington handed the ball off to Jones plenty of times and he scored a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Leon Washington ran the rock nine times for thirty yards. Outside of
I wouldn’t say that the Atlanta Falcons should be breathing a sigh of relief, but they should feel a little better after watching the replacement for Michael Vick play rather well in his first preseason outing. That someone was quarterback Joey Harrington, who was the starter in the Falcons 31-16 loss to the Jets at the Meadowlands in New Jersey on Friday night. The score didn’t matter, but what did was Harrington, who played well in his first start since being thrown into the starting job for Vick, who will be going on trial in November for dog fighting charges.
The numbers on Harrington, who was once the third pick of the draft - 6-of-9 for 88 yards. His best throw was a completion that covered 37 yards to Dwayne Blakley that came when Harrington was able to get out of the pocket and avoid the rush - just like Vick. “Joey was on point,” receiver Joe Horn said. “He was on top of his game and that impressed me. He knew the defenses and he had great ti

From staff and wire reports ATLANTA — With 90 players in training camp, the Atlanta Falcons have yet to reach a critical point regarding Michael Vick’s status on the 53-man roster. The proverbial clock is ticking, however. General manager Rich McKay still isn’t sure if the NFL will grant the Falcons a roster exemption if Vick misses part or all of 2007 to answer a federal indictment on dogfighting charges. NFL teams aren’t required to trim rosters to 53 players until Week 1, but it’s more…

RB Jerious Norwood will have a “Frank Gore” kind of season, as he will put up close to 1,500 yards this season if Atlanta plays it smart by giving him the majority of the reps/plays/carries as the “Main” Running Back. He will be leading the Falcons rushing attack, running the ball 75-80% of the time, drawing comparisons to former workhorse and Falcon standout “Dirty Bird” Jamal Anderson (Faster, more Speedier Version). He should be the their #1 Starter throughout the entire season, regardless of Warrick Dunn’s situation and recovery time from injury, as Atlanta should only use Dunn sparingly on third and longs, during passing downs.
He will make every team that passed on him in the ’06 Draft (3rd Rounder) regret their decision. He can run you over and speed by you, making you miss, as he will have 3-4 touchdowns of over 50 yards, scoring 12 times this year.
