Yep, y'all, I reckon I got me an OK deal at the thrift store today.I ended up squandering almost half of my Florida Lottery scratch-off winnings for this week on used books, confound it.But I walked out of that shop with some fantastic titles in a plastic Winn-Dixie bag for a grand total of 39 cents, starting with The Florida Handbook 1991-1992 by Allen Morris, originally valued at $39.95, and a first edition of the late Shel Silverstein's very first book for young'uns, Lafcadio: the Lion Who Shot Back. Now, I've got to tell y'all, Lafcadio doesn't look like it's even close to the same condition it was in when it first hit the shelves in 1963, and its dust jacket is long gone, but so what? Shel Silverstein wrote it, the same feller who wrote "A Boy Named Sue" and "The Cover of the Rolling Stone." That alone makes my tattered copy easily worth 10 times -- maybe 15 times -- what I paid for it, even with the turquoise rubber-stamped sow with "Nana T." handwritten in Magic Marker on
The Hill Blog: It Is Time For a Flatter, Fairer Tax Code (Sen. Ron Wyden) Excerpt:"The tax code, last reformed in 1986, has grown into a 1.4 million-word, 10,000-section behemoth that takes the average taxpayer 31 hours to navigate each year. In the 21 years since Congress passed the Tax Reform Act of 1986, there have been approximately 15,000 changes made to the tax code. That works out to roughly three changes for every working day of Congress. The six billion hours each year that Americans are estimated to spend doing their taxes is greater than the combined annual working hours of every American employed in the manufacturing of cars, computers, airplanes and steel in the United States. The problem has grown so dire that the public now shells out more on tax preparation than our government does on higher education. Clearly something is wrong and it’s time for a change."http://blog.thehill.com/2007/04/19/it-is-time-for-a-flatter-fairer-tax-code-sen-ron-wyden/Alex
Gordon Brown's alleged plans to tax 4x4's and gas-guzzling cars off the road are a complete travesty. It is apparently only going to affect some 225,000 motorists so what precisely is the Government expecting to gain from this ridiculous plan? Added to this is the photograph on page4 of The Times(20/03/2007) showing a woman holding a placard saying "no 4x4's on the school run". The amount of such vehicles on the school run is minimal in comparison to the amount of vehicles that are actually on school runs in the first instance, and Gordon Brown is the idiot who made it cheaper for families to own a second vehicle with which to do the school run by reducing the excise duty on smaller cars. It is these vehicles that clog up our roads on a twice daily basis, polluting the atmosphere and bringing our town centres to a standstill at a time when people are trying to get to work. It is a pleasure to drive during school holidays when the school runners are off the road and the normal daily
