      Is Fair Trade Really Fair?
Fair trade, the social movement towards alleviating poverty and promoting sustainability while providing a fair price to small farmers, has been gaining support rapidly and earlier this year Sam's club began offering fair-trade tea, bananas, and roses; however, in actuality all of the large quantities of tea, bananas, and sugar are imported to the U.S. by large plantations. And in order to coop w

Fair Trade Eco T-Shirts - a designers’ dilemma
There’s a moral obligation for all t-shirt designers to try and pressure the industry, alongside the consumer, to practice business more ethically. This for me is a completely different argument to judging the conditions of the Third World from a First World perspective. Here the only people who we can blame are the t-shirt printers [...]

Coffee with a Conscience: Why Buy Fair Trade Coffee
Coffee is second only to oil as the most traded commodity in the world, and the United States is its largest consumer. While the average cost for a pound of coffee ranges from $3.00 to almost $40.00, the average third world coffee farmer receives only 25 to 50 cents. Though a good yield can garner close to $10,000 a year for the average farmer, by the time that same yield hits the cup in the US, it is worth more than three-quarters of a million dollars. Before harvested coffee beans make it to the US, they are bought and sold by middlemen, who set the per pound price paid to disadvantaged farmers. Though there have been initiatives to curb the middleman's influence, there hasn't necessarily been a way to side-step them completely, until now. Fair trade organizations, such as Fairtrade La

      (Un)Fair Trade
First, a little bit of background. Throughout its history, Canada has always been more a collection of regions than a united country. Animosity between the French and the English is so entrenched that it has become part of our national fabric. Government after government has focused its agenda on appeasing the roughly 26% of Canadians who identify themselves as ‘French’. Social engineering has been part of Canada’s makeup, with such endlessly flawed concepts as forced bilingualism forever causing wedges to form between our peoples. The old adage ‘give them an inch and they’ll take a mile’ has become a tangible thing in this country. Successive Eastern-based federal governments have planted ill-fated policies that have led us right to a perpetually failing situation. In the

      Fair Trade Chocolate
I haven’t thought much about “Fair Trade” products. And that goes for fair trade chocolates as well. But just in time for Halloween an email thread set me straight. Back in April of 2001 the BBC reported on child slavery and chocolate. At the time, “it was estimated that 15,000 children had been sold into slavery on the Ivory Coast, producing cocoa which then goes towards making almost half of the world’s chocolate.” A police chief in the neighboring small town of Sikasso Mali was quoted as saying, “…the missing children reports are endless. It’s definitely slavery over there,” he said. “The kids have to work so hard they get sick and some even die. Many are imprisoned on farms and beaten if they try to escape. Some are under 11 years old.” This was one of the first reports on the issue. That year under pressure from the US Congress, the chocolate manufacturers promised to start eradicating forced child

That's clever) is joining the campaign against child slave labor in the production of cocoa and chocolate by running a competition for the best chocolate recipe, using fair trade chocolate, of course. Check out her website and enter too. The deadline is October 5th. I think she's letting readers do the voting. THAT might be dangerous, but I intend to triumph, because chocolate is my middle name. Eco friendly, Fair trade Certifed Jewelry by GreenKarat
An organization named Green Karat certifies gold as green or eco friendly. The make sure that gold was mined not under war, thru fair labor, and do as less harm to the environment as possible. They do this by retraining miners into non-mining livelihoods, advocating for the recycling of precious metals. Most of it is sitting in bank vaults anyways! Gold mining is faulted with deforestation, soil erosion into streams. The industry uses chemicals, especially mercury to separate gold from rock. Its harms both its workers and the surrounding ecosystem as well. They also oppose diamond mining because of the unconscionable human and ecological sacrifice as seen in the hit film “Blood Diamond” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio. As that movie showed the Diamond industry has financed the activities of various rebel groups who have practically enslaved, tortured, killed, and maimed miner workers, and their communities. Organic and Fair Trade Coffee at Caribou?
I recently wrote a piece on 12 Easy Ways Anyone Can Support Fair Trade and from the research on this article at TransFair USA, this lead me to search the various certified fair trade retailers listed on their site. I was surprised by some of the companies listed, such as Caribou Coffee. Their RainForest Blend coffee is certified fair trade and is also certified organic. I have not been to Caribou Coffee in a long while, but use to go alot back when i had one near me. I didn’t know i was drinking fair trade coffee. This is great news as Caribou is quite popular and is located in many many towns. I just wonder if this well known or not? In any account to read more on the sourcing of coffee over at Caribou, visit here. Any Caribou Coffee drinkers read Keetsa? Did you know that their coffee is fair trade and organic? Fair Trade Footwear: Walk a Mile in Ethical Shoes
Corporate Responsibility Mondays enters the footwear industry. As always, Josh will be highlighting a company with a negative record, and I’ll be pointing you to some alternatives. Footwear is a topic I lamented over a few months ago searching out ethical options. In an industry whose pinnacle brand is also the poster child (or should I say, it’s child laborers) for the sweatshop industry, you’ll be happy to know you don’t have to walk around barefoot to be fair consumer. Because different people enjoy different types of shoes I’m going to try and hit the different styles by highlighting some great companies doing some ethical shoe sales. For the Casual Shoe Wearer: There is a great company doing a world of good as a shoe shop. The mission is simple: When you buy a pair of shoes, and a pair is given to a child on your behalf. TOMS Shoes is a neat company with a neat story and the goal is to provide you and children around the world with comfortable feet
