When Lin MiaoKe sang Ode to the Motherland during the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony, everyone thought she was simply perfect...she looks flawless and "can" really sing. The 9 years-old MioKe donning a red dress and white shoes singing a patriotic ballad before approximately 1 billion viewers had really swept all the audiences off the floor. Everyone thought that she is a superstar in the
Oh, how I love this commercial. An old school gem from the early 80’s, this is the type of M&M’s commercial that carried the brand through the decade: happy jingles, close up shots of the (now retro!) bag of Plain M&M’s being poured into someone’s hand, and the happy M&M’s themselves, [...]

Whenever I hear "I Need A Lover" by John Cougar Mellencamp, I always have fond memories of it. To me, it was the first tune we jammed with the Pacman in Status Unknown. He brought that song in that day he came in to audition. At least in my mind it was one of the 1st songs we played together. We never learned it completely but I remember jamming it that day in the car wash. From what I remember, t

Summer, 2004: Oh the woes of the pre-digital camera days when I couldn't crop out a sun-burnt bubba holding a beer koozie and doing a howdy-doody wave in the background of the summer vacation family portrait. I ended up sending this pic out with our annual Christmas letter that same year. And if you are able to identify Mr. Bubba, you might want to tell him to switch to SPF 50...Have a great weeke
Veeeery busy, as you might have guessed, but the three beers I've just enjoyed with some friends were more than deserved. But of course I blame the hot weather for the slight dizziness I'm experiencing right now! :)I just wanted to let you join me on my trip to the past; I've opened my drawer where I keep all my old mixtape cassettes and blindly picked one. And Bang! It's 1985 again! Life was good
Once upon a time, there was a mother who cared far too much about image. Every day, she was diligent to lay out a perfectly matching outfit for her first two children. She took great care to wipe their little noses, comb their hair and put their shoes on the right feet. But then, a third child came along and the mother was tired. Very tired. So that child dressed himself each day. He rarely wore s

Despite coming to age in the 80’s, I just do not like 80’s music. It’s OK to hear a single now and then, and the early part of the decade (before my time) produced some good stuff. But what I think of as 80’s music is that horrible synthetic post-new-wave-dance pop. I mean, some of [...]

Today marks my 21st wedding anniversary. Keith and I have this silly competition where we try to be the first one to say, "happy anniversary" each year. I won this year. While stuffing her senior picture into each invitation, I thought it might be fun to dig out my old senior picture and show her. Let's hear it for the Class of '82! Woot, woot! When I showed Paige the picture, she responded by falling to the floor in a fit of side-busting, tears-streaming-down-your-face, uncontrollable laughter. In between hyper-ventilating breaths, she said, "Mom, please don't tell me you sent this out. This picture needs to be burned at once." We built the house we're living in now, fourteen years ago and moved in when the kids were 6, 4, and 1. It was a standard two story floor plan that amounted to a downstairs living space with a kitchen, living area, half bath, and a formal room next to the foyer. Of course, when you have young children, the word "formal" is absent from your vocabulary, so the front room in the house was quickly converted to a playroom. Over the years, we jokingly referred to it as the "formal playroom." Sometimes it bothered me that the first thing our visitors saw upon entering our home was a room filled with brightly colored Little Tykes toys, shelves filled with books, beanbag chairs, and Hotwheels, doll clothes, blocks, and legos littering the floor. Over the years, the room morphed to accommodate my c

Vintage 1990: My college boy is headed home on May 8th and I can hardly wait to see him. Before bronzed skin, it was pale skin that was considered attractive - so much so that women in Europe used to smear a creamy concotion of vinegar and powdered white lead on their faces to achieve the fashionable pallor. The fad began in the mid 1550s by Queen Elizabeth I.
Fortunately, we all know about lead [...]
Having a newborn kitten is amazing. In the end I am so glad Chica was coming to us already pregnant and we didn't decide for abortion otherwise we would have never had such wonderful days with her and little Pumuckl. The first day of Pumuckl I was spending all my time with them. They were both sitting in their wardrobe. From beginning Chica accepted us to stay with them and to touch Pumuckl. No hissing, no meowing, I guess she was just happy that we sit beside her. Maybe she was also happy that we fall in love with Pumuckl and decided directly to keep him. I believe cats feel this. She was warming Pumuckl well and always took care when she moved to not hurt him in any way. Work Hard.. Live Right... Love Life. Simple Life Lessons which could have been uttered by America's hardscrabble Nineteenth Century pioneers. Some of these hard-living pioneers are depicted inside the album cover of Delta Spirit's masterful "Ode to Sunshine" album (RSL Album of The Year - 2007). DELTA SPIRIT'S latest record is an homage, of sorts, for the blue-collar souls and pioneers: the hard livin', hard drinkin, and people dyin' young on life's edge with not much to show for it. The album cover depicts a vintage photo of a monster tornado attacking a grey landscape. The storm depicted here in the cover is the oldest known tornado photograph. This bleak image was taken in South Dakota in August 1884. By personal accounts the storm captured was a dark, powerful monster. It's selection f
This is where the love relationship between Tasha and I began to bloom--One Day 2000 in Memphis, TN. One Day was the first gathering of its kind under the vision of Louie Giglio and his Passion Collegiate Conferences. On May 20, 2000, at least 40,000 college students gathered from all around the US with their tents, sleeping bags and Bibles, all for one purpose--to worship the living God of the universe. It was at this conference that Tasha and I realized just how much we had in common. That it wasn't just the music, but we realized that we both wanted to live lives completely sold-out to Jesus Christ. We both wanted to live our lives on purpose for the glory of God. To make our lives count for eternity. And that's exactly what we're trying to do. To raise kids who love Jesus. To
Vintage 1992: The little girl in this picture is approaching her 18th birthday next month and will walk across the stage at graduation in the weeks that follow. Sigh. I tried to get her to replicate the same stunt for the purpose of a great "then and now" blog post, but all I got was a roll of the eyes.Even though sixteen years has come and gone since this picture was taken, I can actually still remember the circumstances behind it. She wanted another box drink and I told her "no" because they were for her lunch box when she went to Mother's Day Out. And yeah, this was her response to my "no." It didn't go over real well. I know some of you are in this season right now, and let me just say that staging a sit-in (or technically in this case, a "hang-on") for an extra box drink is the least
Time for another part of the Pet Shop Boys singles history. It's cover-time today!Always On My Mind was originally recorded by Brenda Lee in 1972, but it was Elvis Presley that took the song to chart success in the same year. He reached number 16 on the US Billboard's Hot Country singles charts, while Brenda Lee only made it to number 45. Ten years later, Willie Nelson re-recorded the song, and his version climbed up to the number 1 spot in the Hot Country charts. It also became Billboards number one country song of 1982 (and remains my favourite version of the song until this day, btw.).The Pet Shop Boys first performed their version of Always On My Mind in 1987, when various popular contemporary acts performed Elvis Presley covers on a special TV show to commemorate the tenth anniversary
