Several developments have contributed to making the meaning of federalism obscure. Some are old, some recent. Some may be more or less innocent; others are destructive of federalism itself. One of these that may be more or less innocent is the habit of referring to the United States government as the [...]
(cross-posted at Upturned Earth, where comments are open)(This is the first of what I expect will be a series (of as yet unknown length) on the need for a new federalism that respects the need for communities to foster their own sets while at the same time seeking to protect the rights of dissident minority or relatively powerless interests within those communities). In the United States, and reall
Writing at Culture11, John has a post that serves as an almost-perfect springboard for my guest-blogging at his usual homepage beginning tomorrow, where I am hoping to put forward some lengthy thoughts about secessionism, federalism, and individual liberty.Regular readers of mine will be well aware of my argument that the so-called "Three-Legged Stool" of the Republican coalition has become philos

After a bitter and divisive election, Democrats have regained the presidency and widened their control of Congress. Now they are making the usual political victors’ calls for unity. But unfortunately, Americans’ often diametrically opposed preferences for what they want government to do guarantees disunity under our current approach to governance.

Democracy means government by discussion, but it is only effective if you can stop people talking. -- Clement AttleeThe concept of federalism is described in several ways. It can be best defined as a system of governing the nation whose sovereignty is constitutionally distributed between a central governing authority and constituent political units. These political units may be like states or pro

“States’ Rights” is an Anti-Libertarian Concept
The concept of federalism is properly used to describe a system of government in which sovereignty is constitutionally divided between the federal government and the states.
In contrast, the term “states’ rights” is a fraudulent and profoundly ANTI-Libertarian concept that has no other purpose but to deceive and rob
New York’s Court of Appeals last week reversed a lower court decision that claimed that the Federal Truth-in-Lending laws preempted the state’s consumer protection legislation in a victory for consumers (read the Forbes article for more information).

Ask someone what is the most important amendment to the constitution. If he were a liberal, he would likely answer “the right to free speech”, the 1st. If he were a conservative, he would likely answer “the right to keep and bear [...]

Sabahans have always had an ambivalent relationship with the central government. This love and hate relationship goes as far back as the time of the USNO (United Sabah National Organisation) government under Tun Dato Mustapha Harun, a flamboyant, unmanagable and most feared Chief Minister Sabah ever had. The only leader of a state who had 2 stated-owned private jets (Grumman 2) and

Political federalism is a study of eggs and baconpolitical philosophy in which a group of members are bound together (Latin: foedus, covenant) with a governing representative head. The term federalism is also used to describe a system of the government in which sovereignty is constitutionally divided between a central governing authority and constituent political units (like states or provinces). Federalism is the system in which the power to govern is shared between the national &
A “must-read” over at RonPaul2008.com on the principles of state’s rights; the 10th Amendment. Here’s an excerpt:
We are working to overcome a hundred years of indoctrination and increased dependency. The Founders would be appalled that, almost 221 years since our Constitution was written, we are now having to re-explain what a Republic is and [...]
Thompson Rejects Republican Party PlatformFrederalism - Says He Believes In Rights of State and Local GovernmentFred Thompson says "No" to Human Life AmendmentIs this too much federalism to the point of alienating social conservatives? Fred Thompson came into this presidential race as the one candidate social conservatives may be able to embrace. It hasn't quite worked out that way. ... The way things are going all he needs now is to buy the gun that shoots him in the foot. Actually, he's doing a pretty good job of that himself. Thompson is a man of firm principles. There's no doubt about that. Federalism is a top principle. It may cost him with social conservatives who believe protecting life and the institution of marriage trump the federalism argument. Either way, one thing is for sure. The Thompson rollout with social conservatives hasn't gone exactly as planned.Read Article...***Historically, the Republican Party was founded in part by its opposition to State's Rights Feder
Thompson's endorsement of federalism on Meet the Press today is the path the Republicans need to take if they want votes from people like me.They love to use the Bible to defend their anti-choice, anti-gay positions, but Thompson shows why Republicans should really be opposed to Roe vs. Wade, because it trumps federalism.Thompson supports states deciding on gay marriage and abortion, and so do I. I'm pro-choice and strongly pro-gay marriage, but I think this fight should be taken to the states.I endorse a country where all 50 states legalize abortion and gay marriage, but through state jurisdictions and not federal jurisdictions. What isn't implied or stated in the Constitution is left up to the states. That's why if we lived in the 1950's, I'd probably be a conservative Republican.Thompson has quickly jumped into the front as being my favorite Republican. I'm still going to probably vote Democratic next year, but I feel comfortable with someone like Thompson.
Restoring the…what? That’s what many people seem to respond with when a discussion of the 10th Amendment, States Rights and Federalism comes up - however infrequent that may be. But it seems that this discussion might be getting a little more attention in the near future.
Recently, Forbes.com highlighted Presidential Candidate Ron Paul. Here’s what he had to say on the issue:
“As president, one of my priorities will be restoring the 10th amendment and federalism. Decisions about issues like civil unions or right-to-die legislation should be made by the states, not the federal government. I will stop federal judges from imposing new definitions on the States. I will also return control over education to parents and local communities. Decisions about whether or not to fund vouchers, have merit pay for teachers or extend the school year should be made by parents and local school boards, not by D.C.-based bureaucrats.”
