In late March, I alerted readers to a triangle forming in Exxon Mobil (XOM). The stock broke out from its triangle and continued higher in textbook fashion. The upward trend was steady and pretty easy to trade. Importantly, XOM's breakout and follow-through rally helped the S&P 500 ($SPX) and Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) move higher. You see, XOM is the largest stock in the U.S. by market cap. As of this morning, XOM's market cap is around $492 billion. This makes XOM the largest component in the S&P 500, which is a market cap weighted index. XOM represents a little over 4% of the S&P 500.Also, XOM is a high priced stock (don't confuse this with valuation). At $92, XOM is high in share price. XOM accounts for about 5.9% of the Dow Jones Industrial Ave
Watch the triangle unfolding in Exxon Mobil (XOM). It could break in either direction. The apex of the triangle is at $86, which is right where XOM is trading today. An advance past $89 would mark a breakout to the upside, with confirmation coming after a move beyond $90.A drop below $83 would mark a breakdown, with confirmation coming if the stock declines below $81.XOM is arguably the most important stock in the U.S. market. Why? It's the biggest with a market cap of about $460 billion. XOM has a huge impact on the S&P 500; keep close watch of the triangle in XOM and its impact on the broader market.
Reuters ran a pretty interesting article regarding Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) today that really hasn't gotten much coverage. Apparently, its Esso...

The recent move by Venezuela's socialist leader Hugo Chavez to nationalize the energy sector has prompted some of the companies to seek compensation, Exxon Mobil in a stunning move took the battle to court. The state run company PDVSA is barred from selling assets and Venezuela cannot withdraw $300 million from a US bank account, such a move could prevent Chavez from spending money of his so called 'social projects'.An energy expert named Dino Barajas said "It makes the actions you took a year ago fairly pricey," referring to Chavez.

Cramer has only been positive on integrated oil Exxon Mobil (XOM) since late 2006, when crude oil continued its undeniable run to 75 dollars per barrel and carried oil and oil service stocks with it. He had previously called XOM the worst integrated oil, referring viewers instead to best of breed name ConocoPhillips (COP). In a 2/2/2006 lightning round, Cramer said of XOM, "That's just a large bank masquerading as an oil company. They have not kept up with reserve growth." He consistently referred viewers to drillers such as Halliburton (HAL). More recently, though, he has been consistently bullish in 2007. In the main segment of the 11/29/2006 Mad Money show, he claimed, "XOM is the worst of the big oils," but called it a stock that has been annointed by mutual funds as a must own holding, and gave it a 100 dollar price target. "Some mutual funds decided to buy it and they won't stop buying it until they're finished setting up their massive positions"..."Catch the most miraculousl

A federal appeals court today rejected an effort by Exxon Mobil Corp. to overturn rules governing access to a potential multibillion-dollar pipeline that would transport natural gas from Alaska to the Lower 48 states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rules published in 2005 that were designed to give Alaskan energy suppliers the ability to deliver their fuel through pipelines they don't own. Natural gas producers, including Woodlands-based Anadarko Petroleum Corp., were concerned that access to the proposed 3,600-mile pipeline would be limited by the companies building it. Alaska has struggled for decades to get a deal either with North Slope gas producers or independent pipeline companies to build a line that could possibly run from the North Slope through Canada and into the Midwest. A proposed deal between former Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski and North Slope producers BP, Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips fell ap

The world's largest company will give up operations of a major oil project as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez takes control of the country's oilfields. CARACAS (Reuters) -- Exxon Mobil plans to hand operations of a multibillion-dollar oil project to the Venezuelan state before a May 1 deadline imposed by President Hugo Chavez, industry sources said Thursday. Chavez this week signed a decree for the government to take a majority stake in four heavy crude upgrading projects in the Orinoco basin by May 1 as part of a nationalization drive toward Cuba-inspired socialism.
The move shows Exxon (Charts), the world's largest company, complying with Chavez's order to cede control of the Cerro Negro project despite doubts over whether private companies will in fact meet Chavez's ambitious deadline. Energy authorities in 2006 extended an initial deadline to take control of oilfields operated by private and foreign oil companies, which operated the fields for three months
Exxon Mobil recently announced a annual profit of $39.5 Billion in 2006, breaking the record they set in 2005 for the largest profit by a U.S. company. All of this even though their 4th quarter earnings dropped 4%. With data like this one can't help but wonder why petroleum prices are so high. Not only at gasoline pumps, but also all of the other petrol products. I have no problem with a company turning a profit, however, in the case of Exxon Mobil and the other oil companies I have to say that they appear to be some seriously greedy bastards. I could be wrong, and if I am I sincerely apologize, but things simply appear to be a little sketchy according to what I know now.Revision:I just realized that the profit margin was only about 10.5%, which is really not that out of line at all. The reason they break these profit records is due to the fact that their revenue is simply enormous.
