LONDON (AFP) – British and Moroccan scientists said Tuesday they had found the remains of two new species of extinct animals in the Saharan desert, describing the find as one of the most important of the past 50 years.
The team of paleontologists said they had unearthed a new species of pterosaur, [...]
Here's the executive summary of a very important scientific report regarding how the dinosaurs became extinct .
The executive summary, of course, is a cartoon. By Dan Piraro (Bizarro)
Related, I also enjoyed this video where artist Dan Piraro of BizarroBlog talks about his religiously-themed cartoons that were too controversial for the papers. On the latter topic of why do

“Sometimes I think my head is so big because it is so full of dreams,” says John Merrick in the play The Elephant Man. He might have been speaking for the Boskops, an almost forgotten group of early humans who lived in southern Africa between 30,000 and 10,000 years ago. Judging from fossil remains, scientists say the Boskops were similar to modern humans but had small, childlike faces and hug
A rough-skinned frog species thought to have gone extinct more than 20 years ago has been found alive in a Honduran rain forest, experts said. Craugastor milesi—also called the miles' robber frog—was considered "locally abundant" in Honduras until the 1980s, when attempts to find the frog proved unsuccessful.
Tyrannosaurus Rex or T-Rex(extinct 65 million years ago)I bet you already know this prehistoric animal T-Rex. I still can remember how real Jurassic Park movie was, when i watched the movie. This 43.3 feet long, and 16.6 ft tall, with an estimated mass that goes up to 7 tons animal was one of the largest land carnivores of all time.Like other tyrannosaurids, Tyrannosaurus was a bipedal carnivore w

Researchers from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and the University of Texas, USA, have extracted genes from the extinct Tasmanian tiger (thylacine), inserted it into a mouse and observed a biological function – this is a world first for the use of the DNA of an extinct species to induce a functional response in another living organism.“This is the first time that DNA from an extinct s
According to a British tabloid, "The Sun", a research has shown that due to pollution, a chief contributor towards Global Warming, three species are getting extinct every hour! Also, one in four mammals are in the endangered list. The list also includes one in eight bird types, one third of the amphibians and seventy percent of plant life.
Scientists have taken a gene from an extinct creature, the Tasmanian tiger, and made it work in a mouse embryo.
The pioneering work shows how researchers can investigate the biology of an extinct species by putting its genes in a living organism.
They say that the prospect of cloning the tiger, the largest known carnivorous marsupial of [...]

The greater dwarf cloud rat, an animal which some believed to have gone extinct, has been rediscovered in Mt. Pulag National Park in the Philippines by American and Filipino scientists. It was first found on the heavily deforested Mt. Data.Project lead Lawrence Heaney: "This beautiful little animal was seen by biologists only once previously -- by a British researcher in 1896 who was given several specimens by local people, so he knew almost nothing about the ecology of the species."Researcher Danilo Balete, who captured the specimen on the mossy branch of a large tree roughly 7,700 feet up, said: "We had suspected from its broad, hand-like hind feet that it lived up in big trees, but this is the first evidence to confirm that." After nearly going extinct 150,000 years ago, humankind split into small groups—living in isolation for nearly a hundred thousand years before "reuniting" and migrating out of Africa, a new gene study says. At one point our species may have been down to as few as 2,000 individuals, probably due to climate change—a longstanding theory bolstered by the new findings. The research fills a gap in our understanding of what was happening in Africa before humans first left the continent. "The assumption has always been that the original population [in sub-Saharan Africa] was very small but probably a single population," said Spencer Wells, head of the Genographic Project, which oversaw the study. "Turns out, that is not the case." Continue via:

In 2006, biologists for The Peregrine Fund discovered a remote and tiny population of Madagascar Pochards (Aythya innotata) made up of males, females and most encouragingly ducklings. Madagascar pochards are a medium-sized diving duck endemic to Madagascar. Formally, the stronghold of the species was Lake Alaotra but the lake has over the years degraded due to agriculture production, invasive species such as Tilapia sp. and water hyacinth in addition to pollution and run off from anthropogenically induced erosion via deforestation and soil degradation. The duck was considered "possibly extinct" just before being rediscovered. It is possible to save this species by protecting habitat where remnant populations exist and establishing the species in captivity. From my experience, most po

Such attitudes, combined with recent technological and social changes, are pushing IT to share the fate of long-extinct dinosaurs."[via zdnet]

Here we are, inseparable from our dear little handheld mobiles and yet the takeaway will be "Hmmm... it could get extinct". To understand why, we have to understand or rather define convergence.
Defining Convergence
"Convergence" refers to the blurring of dividing lines among traditionally distinct products and services, technologies, markets, industries, and regulatory structures.
For example
A 6 year old was explaining to the other kids what "extinct" meant."Well," she said, in all seriousness, "It means that the dinosaurs are all dead and have been dead so long they don't stink anymore, and that's why they call them 'exstinkt'."
The baiji or white flag dolphin survived for millions of years but was declared effectively extinct in December after a fruitless six-week search of its Yangtze River habitat. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that a man in the central province of Anhui saw and shot footage of a "big white animal" in the Yangtze river on Aug. 19. The Chinese Academy of Sciences has confirmed that the animal in the footage was a white flag dolphin, it said.
It’s not looking good for the Chinese paddlefish. The only other recent suspected extinction I’ve heard reported was the Baiji dolphin, also from the Yangtze River.
Laser printing technology has long been a choice for medium and enterprise sized businesses, and that has been reasonable choice. Printing machines utilizing laser delivered high quality output at, which is crucial for larger businesses, high speed. Enter any corporate or government office to see those buzzing cubes of plastic cover and electronic inside – laser printers, copiers, and multifunction machines.
Laser has been absolutely dominating office premises, limiting inkjet printer use to home and small offices. One of the reasons of laser printers dominations was incredibly low price of black and white, printouts compared to those produced by inkjet printer. Yes, inkjet were perfect for accurate reproduction of colors, so important in a field of, say, professional photography.
However, with recent inkjet technology advancements, inkjet printers are easy to enter medium and large business sector and even dominate it.
Couple of years ago HP introduced Scalable Print Technology that
For 900 years, Moenjodaro, a city in what is now Pakistan, was the urban hub of a thriving civilization, the New York or London of its day. Around 1700 B.C., residents suddenly abandoned the Indus Valley city, and it was lost in the sands of time until archaeologists began excavating it in the 1920s. Today, visitors can wander for hundreds of acres among its deserted streets and homes.

A new study published in the online journal PLoS Biology suggests that over 400 bird species could become endangered over the next 50 years as a direct result of global warming, deforestation, and conversion of grassland and other habitats to cropland.
The study suggests that changes in land use, changes in weather and shrinking habitats are occurring faster than bird habitat and migration patterns can adjust.
“We found in our study that under certain assumptions by the year 2100, 950 to 1,800 bird species may be imperiled or even driven to extinction by climate change and habitat destruction,” Walter Jetz, lead author of the study, said. “Most of these species are currently not recognized as imperiled.”
By projecting agricultural and land use habits as well as changes in weather over time, the authors were able to model species’ populations for the future. However, if drastic changes are made that impact global warming and human impact on habitat, these finding do not
An Indonesian fisherman hooked a rare coelacanth, a species once thought as extinct as dinosaurs, and briefly kept the ``living fossil'' alive in a quarantined pool. Justinus Lahama caught the four-foot, 110-pound fish early Saturday off Sulawesi island near Bunaken National Marine Park, which has some of the highest marine biodiversity in the world. The fish died 17 hours later, an extraordinary survival time, marine biologist Lucky Lumingas said Sunday. ``The fish should have died within two hours because this species only lives in deep, cold-sea environment,'' he said. Lumingas works at the local Sam Ratulangi University, which plans to study the carcass. The coelacanth (pronounced SEE-la-kanth) was believed to be extinct for 65 million years until one was found in 1938 off Africa's coast, igniting worldwide interest. Several other specimens have since been discovered, including another off Sulawesi island in 1998. The powerful predator is highly mobile with limb-like fins, and

A six-week search of the Yangtze for the white rivers dolphins known as Baiji has turned up no sightings. It is said to be the first large aquatic mammal driven to extinction in half a century. The last confirmed Baiji sighting was in 1997.
I guess it’s one way to garner attention for a few endangered species. There’s a schnazzy promo site. So will money actually save a species, or just keep it around long enough to entertain us over the holidays?

While I agree with Judge Jones, I am reminded of the fact that people have been arrested in this country for reading both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in public. With the current majority party firmly in the grip of America's own Taliban, I fear it won't be too much longer before upholding the Constitution is considered a hallmark of "judicial activism" and its practioners villified accordingly.A federal judge today declared the teaching of intelligent design in Dover Area School District unconstitutional, saying an "ill-informed faction on a school board" adopted a policy that violated the separation of church and state. In a far-reaching decision, Judge John E. Jones 3d concluded that intelligent design is not science. "In making this determination, we have addressed the seminal question of whether ID is science," Jones wrote. "We have concluded that it is not, and moreover that ID cannot uncouple itself from its creationist, and thus religious, antecedents." He scolded
