Karnaugh maps, truth tables, and Boolean expressions KARNAUGH MAPPING
Maurice Karnaugh, a telecommunications engineer, developed the Karnaugh map at Bell Labs in 1953 while designing digital logic based telephone switching circuits. Now that we have developed the Karnaugh map with the aid of Venn diagrams, let's put it to use. Karnaugh maps reduce logic functions more quickly and easily compared to Boolean algebra. By reduce we mean simplify, reducing the number of gates and inputs. We like to simplify logic to a lowest cost form to save costs by elimination of components. We define lowest cost as being the lowest number of gates with the lowest number of inputs per gate. Given a choice, most students do logic simplification with Karnaugh maps rather than Boolean algebra once they learn this tool. We show five individual items above, whic

Converting truth tables into Boolean expressions BOOLEAN ALGEBRA
In designing digital circuits, the designer often begins with a truth table describing what the circuit should do. The design task is largely to determine what type of circuit will perform the function described in the truth table. While some people seem to have a natural ability to look at a truth table and immediately envision the necessary logic gate or relay logic circuitry for the task, there are procedural techniques available for the rest of us. Here, Boolean algebra proves its utility in a most dramatic way. To illustrate this procedural method, we should begin with a realistic design problem. Suppose we were given the task of designing a flame detection circuit for a toxic waste incinerator. The intense heat of the fire is intended to neutralize the toxicity of the waste introd

An Exterior Design with Dynamic, Multifaceted Expressions
An Exterior Design with Dynamic, Multifaceted ExpressionsIn line with an exterior design theme of ‘coordinated movements’, the visual movements created by the car’s silhouette, the lines of the body, and the patterns of light on the body were combined to create dynamic, multifaceted expressions not typically seen on a B-car. The resulting exterior design exudes a powerful energy that makes the new MAZDA2 look as though it’s about to move even when it’s parked. Expressing dynamic movement within the body’s limited dimensions was a major design challenge. For those looking for an even sportier look, a Sports Appearance Package is available (depending on market). By pursuing beauty in the transitions between each expression of movement and others, however, the design team realized

      Trendiest Expressions of 2007
今年の流行語大賞The annual list of the trendiest words was announced in Tokyo yesterday.Topping the list for 2007 was an expression from a local dialect from Miyazaki Prefecture: どげんかせんといかん (Do gen ka sen to ikan). Meaning "I/we/somebody have/has to do something (to solve a problem)," it was popularized by former tv talent and current Miyazaki governor Sonomama Higashi (ne Hideo Higashi).Number two was ハニカミ王子 (hanikami oji). This refers to the embarrassed smiles of teenage golfer and serious heartthrob Ryo Ishikawa. He is enormously popular among women. "Oji" means prince, "hanikami" bashful. Thus, the image is of an attractive, humble young man not sure how to respond to the attention of many women fans.3. 大食い (o gui). Literally, this means "big eater" or "eat a lot." This was made popular by the tv idol Gyaru (gal) Sone, who is of a normal build but can eat with the best of them. She is alleged to have downed 70 plates of sushi in one g

So on a cold and rainy day like today where it’s quite a nuisance to go out for a walk, it’s quite ideal weather to study… French words about the weather Main thing is that you try to remember a few and then as soon as there is a change in the weather, go back to your French weather expressions to see if you can name this type of weather in French. Repeated Expressions
I'll apologize in advance. This blog entry gets a little weird, but it is the type of conceptual weirdness that comes directly from the underlying problems. You may have to squint your eyes a bit to get a really fuzzy abstract view of reality in order to understand the basis, but I think that you'll find it is worth the effort. Jumping right in, we start with the notion that users create piles of information that they beat on with their software tools. That's not too hard to handle, but if you dig a bit deeper into the idea of how to "express" the tools themselves things can get interesting. In a very abstract sense, a software design specification for a system defines a bunch of functionality operating on a set of data. Generally it is very imprecise, but it is a way of actually "expressing" a solution in one or more problem domains. The specification, which consists of various design documents with specific syntax represents a "language" capable of defining the capabilities. While

      Expressions of Feminine Energy
October 22, 2007 The power of the feminine is the power of the creation of life inherent in our role in reproducing the species. Many ancient cultures revered feminine energy, with their goddess just as or more powerful than than male deities. Humans shifted from nomadic hunter-gathering lifestyle to a more stable agrarian lifestyle As human populations grew, so did the competition for land. Warrior cultures, with their emphasis on male strength and competitive nature thrived. The balance of power between male and female was disrupted, as patriarchal cultures subverted the power of female deities, shattering the base of the feminine power. In the process the female psyche was fractured, leaving us very confused on what constitutes feminine behavior. (more…)

'Kumusta' and more: Common Filipino expressions

Rich and poor, young and old knows how to speak and understand English like a second language. This is why, it's no longer probably required for you to be fluent in Tagalog because we can always communicate with you in English. But like I always say, it pays to know a little bit about our common vernacular. In my hometown, I always chance upon American missionaries on the same jeepney ride. And guess what? They know how to talk the talk. They're very fluent in Tagalog and every time I hear them speak I couldn't help but be impressed. So then I thought, maybe I could teach you some of the most basic Pinoy expressions for free!!! This is my gift for your continued support to my website.Have fun!Legend: ["fragment"] - optional Notes:Notice that the Tagalog expressions used to converse with a single person and to a group on a respectful tone is almost always the same.
