Walking Off the Lower East Side: Further Explorations of the lower Lower East Side
I'm wrapping up the walk in the Lower East Side today, and if you've been following along, I veered toward the lower parts of the neighborhood and never walked back to the northern streets. I had every intention of walking the streets north of Delancey, but these streets around East Broadway caught my imagination. The Forward building, with its Jewish socialist publishing history, the Henry Street

      Sonic Explorations of the Varitone
I am going to try to correlate two events that have happened recently in my life, even though they don't really have anything to do with each other. Throughout my life, people have told me that I have a strong intuitive sense about people, places and things around me. For example, I could always tell when a girlfriend was about to break up with me, or when someone close to me was in trouble. Granted, if your significant other hasn't called you in days, and is seeming distant when you are together, that's obviously a tell-tale sign that something is wrong. But, the intuition I have is not as simple as that. After two weeks of obsessively listening to the music of Eddie Harris, I decided to write a post dedicated to his mastery of the Selmer varitone saxophone. Two days later, I notice that h

Notebooks of the Mind: Explorations of Thinking by Vera John-Steiner
Book Description ISBN-0195108965 How do creative people think? Do great works of the imagination originate in words or in images? Is there a rational explanation for the sudden appearance of geniuses like Mozart or Einstein? Such questions have fascinated people for centuries; only in recent years, however, has cognitive psychology been able to provide some clues to [...]

      Explorations in Acrylic Continue
Don't Ask Why, 6x8, acrylicI'm having a jolly time with these Chroma Interactive Acrylics. They are allowing me to paint in an atmospheric way, and achieve results that I like but am too impatient to achieve in oils. ( It's a character flow, I know LOL) So here are a few things I've learned: You need to use A LOT of paint to get results similar to oils. Oil paint is, well oily or buttery, and spreads smoothly over the canvas, and it's more opaque even in thin layers. With acrylics you need to use a lot more paint because it doesn't spread over large areas as easily. Not a really big deal, just something to get used to. A good paint extender is a must. I'm using Golden brand soft gel gloss and like that very much. You can really get juicy effects and good brush strokes or use it to get lum

      Explorations In Cultural History
Author: Gerry SmythPaperback: 200 pagesPublisher: Pluto Press (April 1, 2001)Language: EnglishISBN: 0745315127Cultural history has opened up innovative approaches to the research and writing of history. The central themes of this volume are that culture is historically conditioned and history culturally conditioned. The production of history is now clearly recognized as a cultural practice, an invention in the present, as much as a representation and interpretation of the past. Both theoretical and practical in its approach, this book explores the development of cultural history, and its impact on current teaching. Part 1 examines the ways in which conceptions of historical meaning have been challenged, via developments in a range of disciplines (including literary and linguistic theory, history, sociology, anthropology, media and cultural studies). Part 2 looks at four case studies drawn from America and Britain: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the music of the Beatl

      Explorations in Rhythmatism
When I picked up the latest issue of Wax Poetics, my head was overloaded with new musical ideas for this blog. For those of you who have never heard of Wax Poetics, it's one of the most artistically creative and entertaining zines focusing on jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop from the past and present. Previous covers of Wax Poetics have featured such heavy hitters as James Brown, Isaac Hayes, The Meters and David Axelrod. The April/May issue of Wax Poetics features an engaging interview with Steve Reid, one of the most trailblazing drummers/percussionsists in the musical pantheon. Reid got his start in music at age seventeen when Martha and the Vandellas came to play at his high school. Their drummer was a no-show, so Reid sat in and eventually became a member of their touring band, even playing on a couple of Martha and the Vandella's hit songs "Dancing In the Street" and "Love Is Like a Heat Wave". After a year of touring and recording with Martha and the Vandellas, Reid earned a gig w

Malaysians should embark on Polar explorations?
Comment: I'm at odds with this. On one hand, it is good that she had been to the two poles but the results? Just being the first Malaysian woman to be there. Fine. But then there were others (not Malaysians) who were there before her. Ideally, the next exploration should be scientific-based, not just because of the two poles are there waiting to be conquered (which by the way is a misnomer since the two poles had been conquered many times over). Make it more meaningful and with basis. Just because it was there isn't a good enough excuse anymore. SEPANG, April 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's first woman to explore the Arctic and Antarctica regions, Datin Paduka Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir, wants young Malaysians to continue with her expedition to the North and South Poles."I want to challenge Malaysians regardless of age and gender. Go there and bring back the time capsule buried in Antarctica to Malaysia. It can be anybody. If there is someone prepared to go, I'm w

Meanwhile At the Art Gallery (Art explorations with wee ones)
I love taking my children to various art venues – their favourites, of course, being any outdoor exhibition of the arts-and-crafts kind. They’re a lot less excited and a lot less well behaved when they’re subjected to formal settings like art galleries, where my hushed mantra is usually “no, you can’t touch this”.A while ago, I took them to see the works of an interesting sculptor, Andrew Benyei, which were being shown at a tiny local gallery. It promised to be interesting, at least for me: an exhibition of contemporary sculpture that was described as an exploration of the human condition, through several tableaux from everyday life (or maybe just the everyday lives of working stiffs). My children didn’t care much about the existentialist queries posed by these affecting, sometimes poignant compositions. But they were captivated by the seeming playfulness of the miniature people in “funny” situations – this was the first time they had seen such colourful sculptures i
