My cousin has been experimenting with gratitude. For thirty days she has committed to finding something, anything to be grateful for. Reading her posts follows the wave of inspiration striking, uncertainty creeping in, and then breaking through again – not to inspiration, but something else. I dare call it change. Because of her readership she is called to be accountable for her promise some

Although it’s been several years since the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, it looks like some of the data gathered during the orbiter’s final mission will be put to good use. A hard drive salvaged from the wreckage contains the results of an experiment to study the way xenon gas flows in microgravity, and [...]
SPACE.com - Using data recovered from a damaged computer hard-drive that was aboard the ill-fated Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003, scientists have recently learned more about why the act of shaking a material can quickly transform it into something completely different.

About a year ago, one morbidly obese (er, a tiny bit chubby) man began a quest to find out what happens when you stop being polite and try to exercise via Wii Sports (see above). Apparently after losing 9 pounds, dropping two points from his BMI, and 3-inches from his waist, he's ready to go again, this time with the Wii Fit. Sure, it sounds like a second-rate Super Size Me publicity stunt -- and it probably is -- but who doesn't want to see just how lean the Wii's newest accessory can get you? Now, the tubby 191 pound man will run himself through a rigorous Wii Fit program for five shocking weeks. The stunt has already scored him an early Fit from Nintendo, so there's no telling where this could go. We expect to see an Adonis or skeleton when it's all over, pal -- eith

The ship is made to appear to vanish into the sea, and the sailors experience the effects attributed to the experiment, i.e., vomiting, and disappearing and reappearing.

This is so awesome. I had never heard of the experiment at the time I saw this video and it was a complete surprise for me at the end. I was assuming that since the research was done over 50 years ago, there was no ethics committee to tell him that what he was doing was unethical or immoral so [...]

Is Ubuntu usable enough for a non-tech-savvy girlfriend yet?

I join Million Blog List a blogsphere experiment. Its started last April 10, 2008 and right now there are 811 blogs that has been listed.

Ever since Carlos turned me on to the Twitter, the idea of thesideblog/microblog has really taken off for me. It's a great way to share what's going on in your life with others without having to stop and jump through...
Hey, came across this interesting experiment, trying to poll and test the response rate of (i think) bloggers. It’s an experiment to see how long it would take to list 1 million blogs, when there's an estimation of about 70 million blogs worldwide. This blog is listed #292, check it out here, and spread it (for fun yo')(I think it should takes about 6-12 months. We shall see.)
The Experiment ( 254 MB )Over sweeping cliffs and across scenic coastlines, this innovativeshared adventure be gins in the bowels of an old, dilapidated shipgrounded ashore. Mysteriously, you find yourself in the ship’soperations room faced with a highly advanced panel of controls, surveillance monitors, and a wide array of sophisticated technology. As you watch the monitors for other signs of life, you discover awoman. Unable to find a way to communicate with her directly, yourealize that you are her only hope. She needs your help. The problem is, you too are being held prisoner by an unseen captor.Soon you come to realize that the only way to escape is to help oneanother. But… who are you? Who is she? Why do you control both your fates? Is escape from this floating prison your only goal,
There's always going to be "projects" going on to test the response of bloggers in one way or another. Thus, this one came with no surprise.
Name of "project": Million Blog List
It is said that there are over 70,000,000 blogs in existence. (I suspect more.)

Hello all,I know I have been more than neglectful when it comes to posting here on the site but I hope to remedy that with a new experiment.I have been reading A Year At The Movies: One Man's Filmgoing Odyssey by Kevin Murphy (he of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame). The book chronicles his commitment to see a movie in a theater everyday for an entire year. He traveled all over and visited all types of theaters and saw all genres of movies both new and old. It is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes movies, likes to laugh, or breathes. Also, it has inspired me to start my own experiment.I will watch one movie every day for a year. However, I don't have the commitment (or time and resources) to see every movie in a theater so I will be watching movies in theaters, on

Whenever I get caught sat in a coffee shop with nothing to do I have a little thought experiment I do. You see, daydreaming is a good thing that lets the brain prepare for future situations. So I think, what would I do if I had 10-million in my pocket.I was thinking about it so much I did some research when I got back in the office. How about buying a place at Apogee Condo South Beach? This is a luxury residential development. They only have 68 residences so they are worth a lot. They start at around $3 million and go up to roughly $10 million. The nearby amenities are amazing and you're in a great place. So, if I had that 10-mill, I could just spend 3 and keep the rest to live the high life. Or, just spend the whole 10, because it's all about the view baby.Have a look at www.apogeecond

At the moment I'm involved in investigating a really nice money making opportunity called Bum Marketing. Basically, it's a way to make money online without investing a single cent. Therefore it's called "Bum" Marketing, because even a bum from the street could (in theory) start earning a nice income online without paying anything for it.The basic idea behind this marketing method is the following. First, you have to search a product you want to promote. It should be a niche product that people really want to buy. For example a uber-great ebook about magic methods for losing weight without doing any hard work on it (Ok, it's probably an ugly example... :)Second thing is keyword research. Look for long-tail keywords with high search volume and less competition (

By DAVID KOHN SIOLIM, India - At the faded one-story medical clinic in this fishing and farming village, people with depression and anxiety typically got little or no attention. Busy doctors and nurses focused on physical ailments - children with diarrhea, laborers with injuries, old people with heart trouble. Patients, fearful of the stigma connected to mental illness, were reluctant to bring up emotional problems. Last year, two new workers arrived. Their sole task was to identify and treat patients suffering depression and anxiety. The workers found themselves busy. Almost every day, several new patients appeared. Depressed and anxious people now make up "a sizable crowd" at the clinic, said the doctor in charge, Anil Umraskar. The patients talk about all sorts of troubles. "Financial d
The Nazi propaganda mastermind behind Hitler speaks in first person as actor Kenneth Branagh reads pages of the diary kept by the chief of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, revealing the man's most inner thoughts. Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945) was a symbol of Germany's Nazi regime and a twentieth-century icon of maniacal cruelty. His name has been synonymous with cynical, unscrupulous, and at times successful, propaganda. The life of Joseph Goebbels is far more complicated and disturbing than labels like "genius of spin" or "Reich Liar-General" would suggest. The chronicle shows how Goebbels continually "restaged" and reinvented himself -- from his early days as a radical "popular socialist" to his tragic end. The film lets Goebbels speak for himself through the diaries he kept without interrupti

Unconfirmed reports are coming in that a group of mad and moderately drunken German scientists working at a place called the Innovationszentrum Wiesenbusch Gladbeck have not only succeeded in developing a refrigerator which has harnessed the sun’s energy to cool the little beer they seem to have left, the ammoniac-water absorption process they devised also suddenly went haywire and shot a massive gamma ray burst to Mars which then destroyed what little ozone layer was still available there and initiated Earth’s global warming on that planet, too.
Immediately after the unverantwortliche (irresponsible) experiment and resulting Martian ozone vaporization took place, images of a massive avalanche consisting of melting ice and alien dust particles were captured by a US American spa

I have hated Starbucks for a long time. They are symbolic of what I hate in the American food industry, a well marketed company with bad to mediocre product making the most money. I can't blame them for trying to be successful but as a true lover of food/beverages, I cringe at the thought of their coffee.Last Tues, Starbucks closed all 7100 stores across the country to re-educate their employees on how to make their drinks. I thought to myself, great, they are going to improve their product and I won't have to suffer during all the casual business meetings held at Starbucks. Today, I had some time to kill between lunch with my friend Dot and an acupuncture appointment, so I went to Starbucks to see what improvements they've made. I walked in, stood on line, bought my coffee, put my sugar a

I have three simple questions for the folks at the Marin Institute, Mother's Against Drunk Driving and the other anti-alcohol groups who threaten any politician who dares to question the effectiveness of the 21 year old drinking age:(1) In the more than two decades since the drinking age switch was forced upon states by the threat of the loss of federal highway matching funds has the new law kept 18-20 year olds from drinking?(2) Is it a safer environment now that the government has pushed 18-20 year old drinking underground, without controls or supervision, and caused otherwise law abiding young adults to break the law? (3) Is it fair to say to a small group of adult Americans that there are rights the rest of us can enjoy that they are not entitled to -- at the very same moment that the
The scope of the proposed book is to identify and emphasize the successful link between computational materials modeling as a simulation and design tool and its synergistic application to experimental research and alloy development. Compared to other areas in science where computational modeling has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of a particular field, computational materials modeling has been rather limited in its ability to insert itself as a major tool in materials design. The impression that computational modeling is simply an intellectual pursuit with no real life application has, in the long run, hindered the more widespread use of computational materials procedures by the mainstream materials community. The purpose of this book is to provide the average
A guy named Durate made a comment to my post on Obama, wondering why so many people were down on socialism. He sees socialism as much more democratic than other economic and political systems.Of course, socialism in its most pure form, communism, is a totally discredited economic and political theory except in the minds of Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and countless tenured professors at American universities. But there is still a strong movement to make America more socialist, like in many European nations, and to make European Socialism more socialist. The idea of socialism is that the government knows best how to manage our lives. The notion is quite un-American.Throughout history the means of production have been controlled by a small ruling caste—whether it is priests, kings or the bourge

I recently Dugg an article on Digg that was published on SearchEngineHerald.com and told the news that the Google experimental labs were experimenting with search engine rankings being influenced by user votes – just like the Digg model.Apparently, the experiment let’s you influence your search experience, by allowing you to modify search results, manually. The effect of the changes that you make would then be visible the next time that you search the same terms.According to SearchEngineHerald.com, “ It seems like Google wants to harness the power and knowledge of the huge Google userbase. Well, it might be a cheaper approach rather than hire thousands of people to manually do quality testing.”On the positive side, this will effect results by enabling those that searchers prefer to

I made my first attempt at expanding the banded abstracts of the strata I'd been working with on a small scale into stitched works. The watercolor part turned out great, but I didn't like the stitching as much.I used watercolor crayons on a 9x12 sheet and really played with pushing the color around when I added water, so developed some interesting effects. I hadn't been able to get wash effects using crayons before. I just needed more water and time. The result is shown to the left. Then I cut the piece up to create backgrounds for a handful of art cards and a 5x7 picture. I didn't have a plan for stitching for any of them. I just pulled out some silk threads that I had available and improvised. I primarily thought about extending color into oth
Weight training suits/jackets (like a lifejacket but heck heavier) are commonly used to develop muscle and put on weight. Experimenting with the complexities, I realised that they would be the PERFECT to do the reverse. Extravagant at first thought, but think again. Is it really?Love it or hate it! The maths:Build muscles = Increased weight = Increased energy burntBuild muscles + Balanced diet = Weight loss + Yah!As explained in my post on building muscle to lose weight, the heavier you are, the more energy you use. Wearing a weight suit removes the building muscle part from the equation, making it all into one step. Wear the suit and you will lose weight in theory (with a reasonably balanced diet), or at the minimum stabilize your weight. Booty bonus time: As luck would have it, any weigh
This is a photo of a needle that we made float on water for a Girl Scout Experiment. We had to try more than once to make it float. This experiment demonstrates surface tension. Surface tension is "the ability of a substance to stick to itself. A drop of water falling from the rim of a faucet will stretch itself very thin before it drops off. Then it immediately forms a sphere and resists any
My backlog of ‘background’ projects seems to only keep growing and one of the casualties over the last several months has been kinematic experiments in PV3D. Fortunately, Lee Felarca seems to be making some inroads in this area. Check out a recent experiment from his blog - hope to see more from him over time.

Last week I started my random stock picking experiment, to see how random stock picking compares in performance to that of professionals, my hypothesis being that it will do better than the majority. Here are this week's 10 random stocks with their closing prices on 1/25/08.Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) $32.94Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd. (ENH) $38.61AZZ Inc. (AZZ) $33.25Alaska Communications Systems Group Inc. (ALSK) $12.73AMIS Holdings Inc. (AMIS) $7.71OPNET Technologies, Inc. (OPNT) $8.6Royal Gold, Inc. (RGLD) $30.23Aircastle Ltd. (AYR) $22.5Valassis Communications, Inc. (VCI) $Hercules Technology Growth Capital, Inc. (HTGC) $10.72I mentioned last week that I would use Stockalicious to track the stocks. I've decided against this, however, as half the time the widget wasn't loading. A few da
At some point in the (near) future, I will review various investing newsletters and investing gurus. For some time I've had a theory that most newsletters and gurus that have decent performance records owe them not to their investing acumen but to the number of their picks. Over time stocks as a group tend to go up. You pick enough stocks, and your performance shouldn't be bad. That is my hypothesis. In the late 1990s, there used to be something called Monkeydex. It was an index of stocks picked by a monkey, and its performance beat that of many professionals. Sadly, it appears that the index is no more. I've decided to create my own version. Its results will be one measure against which gurus and newsletters will be compared.Every weekend, I will randomly pick 10 stocks, and their performa
I have done this 3 or 4 times in my life…the longest was 2 days. I was not totally successful…I did say a word the last time I tried a day of silence and said more than one on prior attempts.
It was not a failure (any time) – because you learn so much. It is a very valuable practice…one which Mahatma Gandhi did every Friday for many years. You quickly learn about automatic responses that you do not willfully initiate – saying hello, answering when someone says what time is it and you happen to know…things like that. You also find out how noisy the mind is…how quick we are to label things. As time passing not saying a word…the mind does slow down. The running commentary in the head ceases...in time.
I would recommend trying a day or silence or two. It is a worth
In my first post I outlined six online development platforms and decided to make a test by creating the same page on all of them and see which ranks better. After ten days have passed, I have some preliminary results. Best to rank for hidden word 'lovtexmes' was weebly site and then the standalone site cutecoco.com.Best to rank for the whole keyword was cutecoco.com with around position 550 on google (yes terrible). But there seems to be another contender in this game and the things get really exciting.
On my search about if search engines like small site or big sites I found no satisfying answer. So I set up a little experiment on my own. I drive a lawyer directory with like about 20.000 pages for two years now. For search terms like “Rechtsanwalt Berlin” - I am aiming for city specific [...]
When the mood grabs me, I scroll down to the Shuffle function on the iPod and see where it takes me. Here's the first 5 that came up today:
Joshua Radin - Someone Else's Life.mp3
A song from my album of 2006. I really like Radin's calming voice, on this track almost a whisper. Comparisons to Nick Drake are easy when a dude sings quietly, accompanied only by his guitar, but Radin certainly is
My colleague a.k.a my gf asked me to help her design a few samples of business cards for her interview. Then, i started to look for some brushes, fonts and guide and end up with three samples which i think can be labeled as “sucks”. Here i just post two samples because the other one [...]
Well, we are back from the holidays. I'm glad to be back. Happy New Year to everyone! Prior to the holidays, I mentioned the fact that I had just began to conduct an experiment, using the highly powered, and ever so popular social network, Facebook. I am happy to report that as of today, January 2, 2008, at 12:40 p.m., CST, the group has exploded to 6,421 members. One thing that I found interesting, which is very relevant, and I will explain this in more detail in a further post, is that once the group achieved 5,000 members, it took on an accelerated rate of growth. I expect to see an additional acceleration at 10,000 members, as well as 15, 000 members. I am anticipating that the group will reach 10,000 members by Saturday, January 5, 2008, and no later than Sunday, January 6, 2008.

This was emailed to me several years ago. IT is very interesting... It also makes you THINK... Was our universe created by design?By Jim Holt Was our universe created? That is, was it brought into being by an entity with a mind? This is a question I began pondering after my recent inquiry into the end of the universe. (For some reason, cosmic mysteries are best contemplated in pairs.) It is the fundamental issue that separates religious believers, ranging from Deists to Gnostics to Southern Baptists, from nonbelievers. To many atheists, the very idea that our world could have been created by a conscious being seems downright nutty. How could anyone, even a god, "make" a universe? To get a better understanding of this matter, I thought it might be wise to consult the man who has done more than anyone else to explain how our universe got going. His name is Andrei Linde, and he is a physicist at Stanford University. (He's also an artist and an acrobat, but never mind

Last night on the official Google blog, Udi Manber, vice president of engineering, announced that Google is testing a publishing platform called Knol.
It’s being compared to Wikipedia and Mahalo. While it’s a somewhat different take on knowledge collection, these comparisons are apt.
From what we know so far, Knol is a wiki-like platform. Authors can create topics, and there are tools to interlink articles and content, but as Manber says, an article, or “knol,” is “just a Web page.” Where it differs from a wiki is its focus on the author. All knols will highlight who wrote them.
Knol should make it easy to create nicely formatted reference pages.

That small difference becomes dramatic when you put Knol alongside Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a collaborative system. There is no author listed on a wiki page because a page may have many authors (if you want to, you can divine who said what on the history
Yo home slice!
That’s the way Finn is greeting people these days. Is anyone else’s kid speaking indecipherable jargon? I mean, this goes way beyond being psyched, and it’s a ginormous buzz kill to interpret.
I’m experimenting with a new feature that should add the title of your latest blog post to your comment. Please comment and let’s see if it works or if the whole shebang crashes to bits. Thanks to Jennifer for this cool idea.
I don’t have to tell you that the holidays are upon us. I realized that I totally forgot to put up a guide for spouses, and I’m not going to do it now. Instead, you men who are floundering, get ye to the jewelry counter posthaste!
Before you go, check and see if your lover wears silver or gold. I say this only because MY lover once gave me a gift of silver jewelry, and while I acted appropriately grateful, inwardly I was miffed, as I never wear the stuff. It makes me look as if I might faint.
Some of you may b
Was bewirken Flohsamen ?
For the sheer joy of it, five more of the random best:Nicole Atkins - Maybe Tonight.mp3Oh, I kissed the iPod when it threw up this gem first. I had just finished putting together my Any Major Awards nominations, in which I already awarded Nicole Atkins, for being a viable alternative to the horribly overrated Amy Winehouse. This song sounds like... Petula Clark meets Blondie meets Abba. It's glorious pop. On other tracks, Atkins gets all soulful ("The Way It Is"), or goes into '80s throwback mode, sounding like the B-52s as sung by Sandie Shaw on Broadway ("Love Surreal" or "Brooklyn On Fire"). Absolutely marvellous, and so much better than schtick merchant Winehouse.Crowded House - Fall At Your Feet (live).mp3This is from the Farewell To The World live CD, which was recorded in 1996 and released ten years later. That album was one of those rarities among live sets, where the stage versions almost invariably eclipse the studio originals. And so it is with "Fall At Your Feet", one of
By: Martial Can we take a banned site - No pages indexed in google, yahoo or live and can we give it life and PR rank? That is what is being attempted over at www.omg-1-com and the big question is can it be done?Google, Yahoo and MSN Live are such big players in providing traffic the question is can a website survive if the big engines have banned it?Many sites get banned and even some deserve it. Yet there are many sites who receive a penalty or even a banning and they just dont know why. Most just receive a penalty and that means their site is still in the index but just not ranking well. The site owner just needs to seach for his url and if it is found you are not banned. If you cannot even find your url, well simply put "you're out!"But don't fret as there are ways to get back in, but first you have to appologise to the big G and others and file a reinclusion request. But first I would remove the tactics that got you banned in the first place, remove your hidden text and keyword s
It's fun, this iPod randomising thing. And, as Rol of the excellent Sunset Over Slawit blog pointed out in a comment (I do like comments), my iPod does have good taste. So here's today's lot, though it's a 8-track experiment, iPod having suggested two songs I just recently posted, by Josh Rouse and Miles Davis, and Ingrid Michaelson's "Breathing Again" which I just recently downloaded from the fineDon't burn the day away blog, whose thunder I didn't want to steal.Foo Fighters - Statues.mp3I love Foo Fighter's new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. It might well have replaced The Colour And The Shape as my favourite Foo album, even if the new set has no "Everlong" on it. Clearly, my iPod loves Foo Fighters as well, having featured Grohl's lot in the first random experiment. "Statues" is turning out to be one of the best songs on the album, a fine piano driven number which however reminds me of some other song I cannot place. The line "we're just ordinary people" is
