You gave up jumping rope ages ago - mostly because "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" came into play for those of you with two left feet.
Solution: A ropeless jump-rope. Yes, you read right a jump-rope that lacks what many would consider a critical feature: the rope.
Jump ropes have obviously come a long way and they aren't just for recess anymore. They have always provided a simple and effective workout on the go, but now JumpSnap loses the rope, leaving two handles with electronic chips and an LCD screen that estimate calories burned, while providing a timer and audible workout summary. It even makes a snapping sound with each rotation so you don't feel entirely silly - and btw jumping rope isn't for wimps, think boxing regimen. While you might not find Sugar Ray jumping wi
I love contests, so I decided to participate in two blogging contests that are offering a bike giveaway.
As you can see, bikes are popular in my neighborhood. Bike commuting is common in Southern California because of our great weather. It’s also a great way to go green, and to get a great work-out.
Cycling around the neighborhood keeps my muscles in shape and is a great cardiovascular exercise.
We’re lucky here, our busses have bike carriers attached to them, and we have miles and miles of bike trails right next to the ocean. The Pacific Ocean is gorgeous. (Picture coming soon)
Bicycling is one of the most popular exercises.
For the contests, I’ve included a link back to both of the bloggers posts that are sponsoring the bike giveaway--one from a fellow Iowa Avenue member, John o

The key to losing weight is burning more energy than you take in as food. Now you can either eat less, or move more. If you lead a very sedentary life then eating less will help, but without additional exercise you will see limited results. Regular exercise is important to weight loss.

Abs Workout Exercise And DietBy: Pete MarksIf you want rock hard visible rock hard abs diet abs workouts and exercises alone will not do it. The world of nutrition and exercise is one of decided polarity. My battle cry for the day is this: Can't we all just get along? Instead of focusing on the divergence of opinion, let's try and cut some common threads when it comes to diet and exercise and see where we all agree... And then we can debate about those! Macronutrient Extremes Dietary regimes range here from very high fat to very low fat - ditto with carbs. The common thread? Eat your veggies! This one is pretty much universal. Both extremes of the dietary spectrum and just about all dietary guidelines recommend a multiple daily serving of vegetables. Eat low glycemic index/load carbs such as; fruits, veggies beans and whole grains. Eat good fats like omega-3's (fatty fish), mono-unsaturated (olive oil, nuts) and d
When we begin training beginners to roll, we put them kneeling and have them roll forward into a proper landing position. Then we reverse that and have them roll backward from either a landing position or a seated position into a kneeling position. It usually doesn’t take too long to get to feeling fairly proficient with these two exercises, and here’s why: momentum covers mistakes..Take a bicycle wheel as an example. Stand it up on its edge and it falls over. Stand it up and start it rolling and it takes much longer to fall over. Because of conservation of angular momentum, a rotating object resists a change in its axis. So the wheel does not fall over and it is fairly easy to roll forward and backward with momentum..But what if as you gain proficiency you begin to slow down your knee

Exercise will not cut the risk of heart disease in those who are overweight unless they also slim down, according to a study of thousands of U.S. women published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
"Even high quantities of physical activity are unlikely to fully reverse the risk of coronary heart disease in overweight and obese women without concurrent weight loss," Dr. Amy Weinstein and colleagues at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center reported.
The study including nearly 39,000 women began in 1992 and traced a number of health issues. N ormal weight was defined as a BMI of <25, overweight BMI 25 to <30, and obese BMI 30.
The researchers said 34% of the women in the study were physically active based on government guidelines, 31% were overweig

The pacing strategy continued: Setting the scene with two examples and a summary of modelsIn yesterday's post, we looked at the admittedly rather obvious question of why a pacing strategy exists. It's a question that is often dismissed as non-sensical and irrelevant with an obvious answer, but hopefully, it's possible to recognize that in fact, this question has profound implications for exercise physiology. First of all, it has no explanation according to the prevailing theory for fatigue. Secondly, it stimulates one to think a little more deeply about why such an obvious thing exists. In otherwords, is it conscious or sub-conscious, or perhaps even "pre-conscious"? Is it simply a function of training and experience? But then, how does training help you understand how to pace yourself? W
One of the unique characteristics of kung fu is it's emphasis on the importance of stance training. Generally this consists of holding a static stance for a certain period of time, and this is done not only to thoroughly familiarize a student with the stances, but also to increase leg strength and, to improve stability, to train balance (particularly in stances where all the weight is on one leg), and to increase flexibility (particularly for low stances).Placing such an emphasis on stance training is staying true to a very traditional method of training, but in focusing on static stances many schools of modern kung fu or wushu neglect another aspect of stance training which is equally as important - stance changing exerises. One of the reason there are so many stanc
This is something you already know, but you forget sometimes. So Crabby will remind you. (This is one of those sort of preachy posts, sorry. They happen sometimes). But here's the deal:In order to succeed at any worthwhile long-term health goal (exercise, diet, stress reduction, whatever) you have to Give up on Being Perfect.Duh, right? But we all keep forgetting this all the time. The Pursuit of Perfection, and the all-or-nothing thinking that follows naturally from this delusional quest, is one of the two most lethal motivational mistakes you can make. (The other is Not Actually Giving a Crap--this is what happens when you embark on a self-improvement program because someone else thinks it's a good idea. They may be right! Still, it ain't gonna work). But unless you come to grips with you

The pacing strategy - why the "obvious" is crucially importantOn Tuesday, we introduced a new series on Fatigue and Performance, which, based on the comments and responses so far, promises to provide much food for thought, interesting discussion and a few strong opinions! And thinking about the subject (see my thoughts at the bottom of this post), it's clear that the most difficult part of this whole series is going to be controlling the logical flow of the discussion. It's such a vast, enormous topic that it's going to be impossible to put across a vast amount of information without skipping over studies that some might consider relevant. That's the nature of science - if not, then every review article would have thousands of references! So literally, ten years of academic debate and resea

How do you exercise? Nowadays my main exercise consists of biking to work. Occasionally I get to practice some aikido. I live about 10 km from the dojo and for the last couple of years I have chosen not to take the car to get there. The distance and a tight family life schedule has made it difficult for me to practice frequently and regularly.Aikido is a martial/movement art which is about responding smoothly to a training partners moves and actions. You could say that the technical goal is to deal with the partners attacks in a sustainable manner. The movements are flowing, natural and non-aggressive.Lately I have found it quite stagnant and impractical to practice indoors in a room lit by flourecent lamps. If I chose to practice under the sun I could choose a spot nearer my home and I im

Exercise has long been recognized as an important factor for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Before the discovery of insulin, patients with diabetes, particularly those with Type 1 diabetes, were very limited in their ability to exercise, because it was almost impossible for them to avoid dehydration and ketosis. After treatment with insulin was established as a mainstay of treatment, the exercise is no longer an elusive activities. With their ability to exercise, it became clear that hypoglycemia is often developed in the immediate post-exercise period and during the 24 hours after exercise. It was also acknowledged that ketosis could be induced by exercise in patients with poor glucose control and that even patients with excellent control sometimes develop hyperglycaemia after vigoro

Is swimming a good exercise for weight loss? Read and have your own answer. There is no doubt that swimming is good exercise. It is a great form of low-impact exercise, making it extremely popular with people who are elderly, pregnant, recovering from an injury, disabled or extremely overweight. The other advantage of swimming is that it is a great cardiovascular workout, that elevates the heart and respiratory rates, improving overall health. However, it is not the perfect exercise for weight loss. These things are concluded after researches:Because water cools the body so much, it is thought that the bodies of swimmers might aim to maintain a layer of fat under the skin for insulation. Some researchers believe that being surrounded by cold water for a period of time may increase the appetit
