Neigbourly tensions: Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange 2000
A field based user was experiencing problems with mail so I took the opportunity to migrate them from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007. Oh dear. Let me explain. This field based user was using an 'Internet Mail' connection to use SMTP/POP but Exchange 2007 doesn't appear to come with POP enabled out of the box. Now, suddenly the user could send but not receive any email. As the user was keen to get moving I tried to move the mail account back to the originating server and the move failed with Exchange 2007 complaining with:Error:Error was found for Username(Username@domain.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Approving object. Failed to open mailbox with error: The operation failed., error code: -1056749262Exchange Management Shell command attempted:'b03773f2-0910-4568-ade5-e571bd827023' move-mailbox -TargetDatabase 'CN=Mailbox Store (HOST),CN=First Storage Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=HOST,CN=Servers,CN=First Administrative Group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=Company,CN=Microso

      Exchange Server 2007 Curiosities
In order to use Virtual Server more effectively on my Exchange 2007 Server I upgraded the memory from 4GB to 12GB and upon rebooting this is where the unusual behaviour started. Firstly, Virtual Server would hang upon bringing up the administrative console. The Event log was reporting:Event 2216 W3SVC-WPThe script started from the URL '/VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe' with parameters 'view=1' has not responded within the configured timeout period. The HTTP server is terminating the script.Stopping the Virtual Server Service refused to obey and the only way to fix the problem was to manually terminate the process and restart it. Since then VS has worked well. However, this morning mail was not flowing internally or externally and was reporting Event 1009.Event 1009 MSExchangeMailSubmissThe Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission service is currently unable to contact any Hub Transport servers in the local Active Directory site. The servers may be too busy to accept new connections at this tim

Delay all outgoing mail in Exchange Server 2007
We have a rule in our Mail sweeper that holds all outgoing email until it is manually released. The purpose of this is to effectively delay outgoing mail by a few minutes as there are a number of times when users send a mail they wish they hadn't, or send a mail to the wrong recipient, and so on. The manual release is the nearest we could get to delaying mail - of course it would be nice if we could simply tell Exchange to delay all outgoing mail by 'x' minutes - I know that this can be achieved as a rule in outlook but there doesn't seem to be a similar rule in Exchange Server.   Technorati Tags: exchange, exchange server, mail

      MOSS on Exchange Server 2007
The installation of the 64bit version of MOSS onto the same server as Exchange Server 2007 went quite smoothly. The installation completed quickly and the configuration wizard ploughed through the ten steps with no complaints. Firing up the Central Administration Server again was a simple process and configuration began. This is where the problems started. Configuring incoming mail was the first tricky problem. MOSS insits on telling me to install the SMTP component but as Exchange 2007 is already on the machine I'm a bit loathe to comply. Configuration of a new site went very smoothly until I actually tried firing it up in Internet Explorer whereupon I was met with: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage Most likely causes: You are not connected to the Internet. The website is encountering problems. There might be a typing error in the address. This is unusual because the default Sharepoint site seems to work fine. I ran the iisreset /noforce option but that made little dif

Exchange Server 2007 and Office Sharepoint Server 2007
Best Practice time again. The decision to make this time is whether to install Office Sharepoint Server 2007 onto the same server that is hosting Exchange Server 2007. Search Exchange seems to imply this is common practice due to the tight integration between the two platforms however I've always been keen on keeping core, potentially high cpu intensive applications on different servers. The only problem is I don't happen to have an awful lot of servers lying around the place.

      Exchange Server 2007
I seem to have some to a bit of a halt with the roll out of Exchange Server 2007. Yes, I've attended the roadshows and read the forums, blogs and newsgroups and yes I was built up into a frenzy to upgrade from Exchange Server 2000 but now it's installed and I have some 'guinea pig' users running it I'm left wondering ... what now? It's probably me more than the software but, other than OWA, the users don't really seem to have noticed any real difference - which - considering the financial committment we placed with the product is a bit of a surprise.I think I was hoping for some kind of new or whizzy functionality like built-in SPAM filter, etc. Unified Messaging also seems further away than ever as I understand their is some incompatibility between Exchange Server 2007 and our VOIP solution. Only one user has a PDA so the ActiveSync function isn't really in use either. From the clients point of view upgraded them from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003 but the differences they notice

      Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging
[1] http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/um.mspx

Exchange Server 2007: Managing Active Sync Device From Outlook Web Access
In Exchange 2007, Outlook Web Access (OWA) offers a portal for users to manage their Exchange Active Sync (EAS) devices. How to access that information? Log on to OWA Click "Options" Click "Mobile Device" Here is what the page looks like:   Note: If ActiveSync is not enabled for the Exchange user, "Mobile Device" tab won't be shown. You can run the PowerShell command to check the status. Exchange Server: Connector And Performance Issues?
Where and how are connector restrictions configured? In Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 Server, connector restrictions are configured on the connector's Delivery Restrictions tab. The restriction checking functionality is controlled by a registry key that is set on the Exchange 2000/2003 bridgehead that is the source for the connector that is being checked. If you need to apply a restriction to a connector which restricts who is able to send data to the designated link or connector, you must manually add the restriction checking registry value. So after you configure the Delivery Restrictions option on a connector, the CheckConnectorRestrictions regkey must also be configured for restrictions to work. Please see the following article for more information: 277872 XCON: Connector Delivery Restrictions May Not Work Correctly If you configure the delivery restrictions on a connector by using Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and forget to add the registry ke

      Exchange Server 2007: ActiveSync Policies
A lot of Exchange Administrators would like to enforce certain settings on all or a few of their mobile users who make use of the Exchange 2007 ActiveSync feature to sync their e-mails, contacts and tasks to their PDA's or Windows Mobile phones. Well, the wait is now over! Exchange 2007 introduces ActiveSync Mailbox Policies, these can be used to enforce and configure various settings on Mobile devices. Settings like requiring a password, the password length, the password complexity, enabling the download of attachments, access to UNC and Windows SharePoint Server Shares can now all be configured using Mailbox Policies for ActiveSync. Exchange ActiveSync policies can be created using the Exchange Management Shell or Exchange Management Console. While the management console gives you the ability to configure only a subset of the settings, the rest of the settings can be configured using the management shell. The table below summarizes the available settings and their description: Se
