Pre-existing heart condition led to the heart attack that caused a man to die while riding Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. According to the news story, the guy was aware of his condition, but chose to ride anyway.  Bad decision, but I can understand why he may have risked it. A 44 year old man died yesterday while riding the Expedition Everest Coaster at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  No reason has been given yet, but I’m guessing it is another undiagnosed medical condition situation. In the world of roller coasters, Expedition Everest isn’t one of the fastest, highest, or anthing like that.  It is a well themed coaster that is totally unique.  There are some parts of the ride that pull high G-forces, but these do not last for any substantial amount of time.  At Walt Disney World, I’d rank it as the 2nd most thrilling coaster behind Rock -’n Roller Coaster. Florida Metropolitan University, a for-profit school that's been the target of student lawsuits, has a new name: Everest University. Its parent company, California-based Corinthian Colleges, announced this morning it wanted to bring FMU and most of its other campuses under one identifiable brand name. FMU has 11,000 students on 10 campuses in Florida, including branches in Tampa, Clearwater, Brandon and Lakeland. It is the subject of at least a couple, still-pending lawsuits, with former students accusing it of misrepresenting the transfer value of its classes. A press release issued by the school this morning makes no mention of litigation: "As a national name in education, employers recognize the value of an Everest education," university president and COO Jan Schoonmaker said. Via Guardian Unlimited: Nepal’s mountaineering authorities are calling for a ban on nudity and attempts to set obscene records on the world’s highest mountain, officials said yesterday. Of everything I routinely read about Everest, I never realized that stripping was such a big social issue. Last year, a Nepali climber claimed the world’s highest display of nudity when he disrobed for several minutes while standing on the 8,850m (29,035ft) summit in temperatures of about minus 10 degrees C (14 degrees Fahrenheit). Of course this “climber” was a man. Let’s be honest: only guys are stupid enough to try something like that. The people who live on the foot hill of Everest worship the mountain as a god and mountaineering authorities have asked the government to ban disrespectful stunts on Everest, Tshering said. Good on ‘em. It’s their mountain and their home. It’s stunning how disrespectful some folks can be.

Evidently, Mount Everest’s destruction by tourism can’t come fast enough for the Nepalese government. According to CNN: Nepal will slash climbing fees for Mount Everest in the off-season to lure mountaineers to the world’s tallest peak and boost tourism hit by years of a Maoist conflict. … the giant mountain remains virtually deserted in the autumn and winter. “We want to give incentives to off-season climbers to go to Mount Everest,” Tourism Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung told Reuters in an interview. “We are working on proposals to give a 50 percent royalty cut in the autumn and 75 percent during the winter climbing seasons.” Given that Everest is difficult enough to climb in the “temperate” season, why on earth would anyone - let alone amateurs - be stupid enough to attempt it in the winter just to save a few bucks? A British man has set a world record by making the first mobile telephone call from the summit of Mount Everest, taking the blessing - or curse - of the cell phone to new heights. Kathmandu, May 22 (IANS) Pemba Doma Sherpa, who rose from an impoverished set-up to become the first Nepali woman to summit Mt Everest from Tibet, has perished in an accident in the Himalayan ranges that also killed two more sherpas.
