Japanese may have more respect for Anne Frank than some Europeans
Here's an article about Japan's Holocaust Education Center, founded by Makoto Otsuka 13 years ago, who'd met Frank's father in 1971. You have to hand it to them, that they may have better respect for whom they focus on than Holland's own government does.

The T80 boasts a 3-inch, 260k color (420 x 240) touchscreen, supports MPEG, MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, ASF, JPEG, TXT files, has an FM tuner, integrated microphone and a DVB-T receiver, which blows for anyone outside of Europe. Europeans Show Disgust With China: Olympic Torch Run Burnt
Security officials have extinguished the Olympic torch amid heavy protests during the relay in Paris. Police in jogging gear put the torch out and brought it aboard a bus, apparently to move it away from protesters. The flame was being carried down a road along the Seine River amid demonstrators carrying Tibetan flags when the relay was stopped. It is not immediately clear what police plan next. About 3,000 police — riding motorcycles, jogging or traveling on skates — are on hand to protect the Olympic torch.  The Paris mayor has ordered a banner over City Hall that reads "Paris City of Human Rights." On Monday, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said all options remained open for Paris concerning a possible boycott of the opening of the Beijing Olympics. [1

Europeans Buy Boston MA USA Real Estate
We have been working with more and more Europeans over the past six months, all of whom are interested in purchasing downtown Boston real estate, not because the core of downtown Boston is in a real estate crisis (more to come on this soon), but because their "dollar" (i.e. Euro) is going a lot farther than it ever has in the past.We talk with a growing number of Europeans each week who are interested in buying Boston investment property, or a Boston vacation home in one of America's most historic cities. Europeans recognize that downtown Boston real estate will always hold its value, and the best time to "get in" is when their currency allows them to do so at a discount.

The United States Department of Commerce released 2007 tourism figures and it is clear that the weak US dollar is bringing more people from overseas to the country. In 2007 there were an estimated 23.2 million visits from outside North America to the US, up almost 7% from 2006. The largest place of origin for visitors was Western Europe, where the strong Euro and UK Pound are having a big impact.

Swedish documentary follows "regular" Europeans who turn to jihad
Why do young men, who have grown up in the safe bosom of Scandinavia, want to sacrifice their lives for Allah? That is the question posed by a Swedish documentary that provides a glimpse into the world of young European Muslims who dedicate themselves to jihad, or holy war.Aching Heart is the story of two young Swedes with immigrant backgrounds - one from Ostermalm, one of Stockholm's poshest neighborhoods, and one from Kvanum, a tiny town in central Sweden - who left their homes in the 1990s to seek martyrdom in the wars of Chechnya and Bosnia and Herzegovina. But most of the focus of the film is on Göteborg, Sweden's second-biggest city. This is where Mirsad Bektasevic grew up. The 20-year-old Swede with Bosnian roots was given an eight-year sentence in Sarajevo this summer for planning a suicide attack there in 2005.The opening scene of Aching Heart is a video found with Bektasevic when he was arrested: Two balaclava-clad men show off a stash of weapons, including hand grenades an

Acomplia (Rimonabant) Safety Data to Be Reviewed by Europeans Next Week
Safety data for diet pill Acomplia (rimonabant) will be reviewed by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) next week after a U.S. panel of experts unanimously recommended against allowing the diet drug to be sold in the United States. More than 100,000 people in Europe have been prescribed the diet drug since the EMEA approved it for sale last year in the European Union. However, the FDA briefing June 13th of its Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee included safety data submitted after European authorities approved Acomplia, and the strong concern expressed by the U.S. panel seems likely to lead to a more than routine review by European regulators. A regular meeting of the EMEA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) is set for June 18-21 and a spokesperson said Acomplia will “surely” be on the agenda in view of the serious safety concerns raised by the FDA experts. “If a big regulatory authority takes a decision or if such information comes to li

Will diet drug Acomplia (rimonabant), taken this past year by more than 100,000 Europeans seeking to lose weight, be pulled from the European market out of concern over depressive and suicidal side-effects? That decision will be made known July 19th following this week’s safety review by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) of data which led a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel to recommend that rimonabant not be sold in the United States. EMEA regulators said that since the unanimous FDA advisory panel decision in mid-June recommending against sale of Acomplia, they have been “reviewing the available data on psychiatric events” including suicidal ideation and depression-related events. The EMEA’s post-marketing data showed that 208 psychiatric adverse events were reported with Acomplia during the year it has been on the market, including 27 cases of suicidal ideation (thoughts of suicide). That compared with 14 cases of suicidal ideation with diet drug Xenical si

Cape Town as an ideal destination for Europeans
And this sort of lifestyle is in fact the norm in every Northern European city, and certainly for most of Europe in general. It’s a lifestyle I was initially exposed to in Holland, and partly in England. As wonderful as this lifestyle may be, South Africa, and Cape Town in particular, is by far the better place to live. Most people I have spoken with, who are non-South African, agree with my sentiments. We have some problems, like all countries do, but these problems are manageable. At least I believe they are. And so did most Europeans.

The survey did not ask where the respondents obtained the content, ignoring the reality that many were possibly downloading television shows from BitTorrent or similar services. The results further strengthen the business models of startups such as Joost, that seek to target a massive potential audience through the use of streamed content over a P2P network, but with the safeguards of DRM and imposed advertising delivery built in. Europeans in favor of action against Iran. Surprised?
Wow! I was surprised to read this. Looks like there's a little pluck left in the old world. Anyways, good news. Perhaps I've been too quick to write them off as allies. This coming with the news of Sarkozy's strong showing should hearten those who hope for a strong Europe. And, you can't blame this one on Fox. It's also true that people generalize way too much about countries: Americans are cowboys; Europeans are effete socialists whose main goal is avoiding work; Muslims want to destroy the West. Well, the Hungarian and Egyptian training with me in my Engineer company shatter those assumptions to bits. And Ed Begley a cowboy? Battle of Lepanto (I don't mean anything by it. Buying a house in France: part 10: visas & immigration: non-Europeans
This section very briefly covers the variety of circumstances that may apply and how you might go about moving to France if they apply to you. There are just too many combinations and special circumstances to adequately cover all of the possibilities so hopefully this will give you a feel for how you might ease your transition to France. If you are a visa national (ie a citizen of a country requiring a visa to enter France), then your first hurdle is the French embassy in your country of residence. There are many visa categories but the simplest lie in the areas of family reunification or if you already have a job offer in France. I imagine that for most people the “job offer” option is most likely to apply. Obviously if you already have a job lined up there’s no problem but if you’d like to organise one, see our section on employment coming soon. Finally, don’t forget that if you have parents or grandparents who are Irish or were born in Ireland pre-1922

Study: Early Europeans unable to stomach milk
The first direct evidence that early Europeans were unable to digest milk has been found by scientists at UCL (University College London) and Mainz University. In a study, published in the journal PNAS [1] (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), the team shows that the gene that controls our ability to digest milk was missing from Neolithic skeletons dating to between 5840 and 5000 BC. However, through exposure to milk, lactose tolerance evolved extremely rapidly, in evolutionary terms (see lactose intolerance). Today, it is present in over ninety per cent of the population of northern Europe and is also found in some African and Middle Eastern populations but is missing from the majority of the adult population globally.Dr Mark Thomas, UCL Biology, said: "The ability to drink milk is the most advantageous trait that's evolved in Europeans in the recent past. Without the enzyme lactase, drinking milk in adulthood causes bloating and diarrhoea. Although the benefits of mil
