Each of us carries around within us a personal code of ethics. We may not be conscious of it; we may not deliberately consult it on a daily basis, we may not apply a decision tree against it to make a choice, but it exists. And, at times, it may falter, or we [...]

Recently, I spent three hours taking the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Ethics class. Realtors must take an ethics class every 4 years to keep their Realtor’s license active. Interesting question with an assumption you have ethics which often isn’t clearly demonstrated in many of today’s businesses. I guess it depends on what you write about and how honest you are in writing. As a retired, fixed income kind of guy, I look for things that can bring in gadget or book money without a great deal of sweat on my part. Since I am a technut and booknut, writing about that

An article from AP via the Seattle Times: New ethics rules touted by Gov. Bobby Jindal as a hallmark of his young administration actually make it harder to prove violations, a government watchdog group said Wednesday.Lawmakers approved Jindal's legislation during the first of two special sessions he called soon after taking office in January. Jindal repeatedly decried Louisiana's corrupt image during his election campaign. The problem, according to the nonpartisan Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana, is in the wording of one bill: While existing law requires "reliable and substantial" evidence of wrongdoing in an ethics case, the bill that takes effect Aug. 15 requires a higher, "clear and convincing" standard in ethics cases. The change will require the gathering of more evidence a

I have a question that I think needs answering from more people than just myself (which is why I'm asking the question):Is it unethical for me to enter into contests on a blog I do reviews for even if I'm told it's okay by the owner of the blog?I ask this question because SQT of F & SF Lovin' Book Reviews often has some really good little contests for free books. As most of you know I do reviews for that blog. So, while SQT says that it's okay for me to enter, I feel some apprehension because I have a feeling that there is something unethical about it. Some part of me doesn't feel right about entering those contests because I get this sense that I shouldn't be entering seeing how I'm a member of the reviewing crew. What do you think on this issue? Am I just being silly?(Don't clic

Family Planning and Christian Ethics in Sierra Leone - This article discusses the issue of family planning in Sierra Leone from a Christian perspective which is indubitably highly debatable. Even though the world's major religions give approval to responsible parenthood, the consensus ends when discussing the 'acceptable' methods. Since the Bible does not categorically discuss the issue of family planning, Christians in Sierra Leoneans should base their decision on the scriptural principles. 'Morals' comes from the Latin mores meaning 'customs'. It referred to what people usually did. It was, at the time, customary to have household deities, and give divine respect to certain emperors. It was immoral to show divine respect to a foreign rebel leader from a small province who had been executed by the will of his fellow men (renamed by us as Jesus, but not a name he would have been familiar with). 'Ethics' comes from the Greek for 'customs' - again it is referring to customary behaviour, but the Greeks did reflect a little more on what was the right thing to do. In their case it would be true that what Socrates was doing, getting young men to question traditional views, was would definitely be unethical in the sense of contrary to custom. In Buddhism there is the term Sila wh

As the world becomes more global and more integrated organizations may find that they are facing problems associated with having operations it two independent countries with different tax laws. When organizations must pay taxes on the same earnings or assets to two different entities they find themselves in a double taxation situation. Since the more taxes an organization pays the less income it can retain within the company many organizations are faced with the ethical dilemma of using tax avoidance methods to reduce this liability. When organizations decide to engage in tax avoidance they must consider more then simply the reduction of income. These considerations can come in the form of ethical responsibilities, national responsibility, the legal or illegal methods they use and the poten

As lgs said to me in a conversation yesterday, I sure came to New York at an interesting time. The wordless Spitzer, biting his lip, with the haggard wife standing near by. But even though this guy was supposed to be the new Force of Good from which evil ran, who really cares that he hired a high-class escort? I overheard a woman with an archetypical Brooklyn accent during breakfast today remarked, "Men will always hire prostitutes, but he shouldn't have done it as Governo

But Peev reminds Carlson that off-the-record agreements are made before the tape recorder rolls, noting rather haughty, "Are you really that acquiescent in the United States?" Carlson responds: "Since journalistic standards in Great Britain are so much dramatically lower than they are here, it's a little much being lectured on journalistic ethics by a reporter from The Scotsman." “Really!” Peev replies. "If this is the first time that candid remarks have been published about what one campaign

Even though tax avoidance and the use of tax avoidance is an ethical question that is not easily answered and is based in part on the personal beliefs of the people reporting their incomes we do know that the government demands compliance. The question of whether or not tax avoidance is ethical or unethical is a matter of personal perspective and of little importance in the debate. The government demands that people comply and doesn’t concern it self with whether or not they agree with it. Idealism and relativism of tax compliance is important. A study found that women and older Americans believe in the ideal of tax compliance while young and male found that tax compliance was relative (Hartikainen & Torstila, 2004). In other words, those who are idealistic believe that tax compliance is

I love getting advice from women who are old enough to have life experience to back up what they’re saying. For some in the dog world, "breeding ethics" is an oxymoron. Such people are consumed by the myth of overpopulation, or enamored with the reality. It's a cause they can champion and use it as grounds to wag their finger at other people in the same way some parents poison their children to gain themselves sympathy. They evoke the suffering of another to add emotional credibility to their position and they satiate their own ego with doses of dogoodery. This ethic brings us wacko groups like PeTA. It also brings us less radical but equally nannying groups like certain rescue organizations. And it also has infested individual breeders. Since animals can not speak for themselves, every sort of ninny-nanny has taken up official dog whisperer duties who are convinced that their authority to speak for animals is on par with their passion for them. It's not hard to demand others to fit a system of ethics that you don't have to abide by, like men lecturing women about abortions. It's not hard
This video shows an ATM scam in which a thief reprogrammed an ATM to dispense four times the normal amount of money requested. The ATM machine was programmed to “think” it had been filled with $5 bills, not $20 bills.
Nine days passed from the time the ATM was reprogrammed until the theft was discovered. During that time, thousands of dollars were fraudulently taken - by the thief who reprogrammed the machine, and by others who unknowingly used a rigged machine, but kept the extra money without reporting it.
(If you are reading via a feedreader, you may have to click through to view the video).
I am fairly certain that no one reading this would be the kind of person to rig the machine to steal money. But how many people would actually report it and return the money? I would have a hard time walking away knowing I had just taken more money than I should have.
I am interested to read your comments.

An essay in today’s issue of Nature struck a contentious cord at the intersection of modern science and politics: that of the ethical regulation of science. The context of ethics and science was succinctly summed up:
When in 1978 the first baby was born by in vitro fertilization (IVF) it was inevitable that there would be calls for the procedure to be prohibited. That science develops too fast for morality had become the cliché of the twentieth century.
Focusing on IVF in Britain, this essay by Mary Warnock is narrow in scope. The same principles can be applied to the use of recombinant genetics and embryonic stem cell research, to name a couple more. The instant that these breakthroughs hit the world stage, they have sparked uproars from “moral authorities,” but in the end, it is largely the scientists that regulate themselves. (the National Academies of Science have been the ones to issue the ethical guidelines on the conduct of all of the above forms of biomedi
The issue of ethics and its respective impact on business and all its related subcategories are extremely complex and sometimes even subjective in nature. The multifaceted interaction of business fundamentals, industry specific norms, local laws, cultural and societal traditions, as well as global business environment can have a significant impact on individual and group members of an organization which in turn may influence their personal and professional views about ethics and its respective place in the business world. Yet it is not to say that ethics role in business is subjective altogether; the most universally accepted norms such as honesty and fairness are independent from geographic and societal boundaries. Similarly, other norms such as legality and general morality do not apply uniformly even within the same geographic location. However, independent from what norms or where, the ultimate responsibility of ethical conduct falls on the shoulders of executive leadersh
I have been having a very lively exchange with several readers on my blog regarding the ethics of Objectivism versus the altruist/collectivist theory of morality. Since the discussion was getting seriously off track I’ve relocated the discussion to here, and I encourage the original commenters and anyone else to join the thread. I am still learning the philosophy of Objectivism but will argue from its stand point.
The original thread is here: http://ellis14.wordpress.com/2007/11/09/ok-ok-the-biggie-atheism-vs-theism/ If you’re new to the discussion I strongly recommend you read all the comments to date. This will prevent anyone having to repost something that has already been addressed.
I was unable to move all the comments because there were so many and they were rather circumlocutory. I will post my latest response as a comment below and we’ll take it from there…
Our usual interview did not arrive today (boo!), but we hope to run this in the next day or two so hang in there.
In the interim, a pretty cool conversation is taking place over at Shel Israel’s blog today. Shel picked up a thread from Dave Fleet, who asked, “Where’s the line between PR pros participating in social media and PR pros exploiting it? Who draws that line?”
Shel was pretty pragmatic acknowledging that businesses are here, and they are here to make money. He had a fantastic response: “To me the number one ethical issue is that companies come to social media willing to have conversations rather than deliver messages.”
This discussion mirrors an expose over at PR Squared. Todd Defren revealed a guerilla marketing firm’s proposal demonstrating a desire to astroturf comments in social media realms. A fascinating conversation ensues in the comments section, too.
Why Social Media Principles Are Necessary

I commented on that already twice and I stated that WabiSabiLabi seems to have a different view on ethics than me. For those of you who do not know WabiSabiLabi, it is an online auction for vulnerabilities. We met the founder of this platform during Blue Hat in Redmond and had some discussions on ethics, vulnerabilities and his platform. I have to admit that the way he tweaked the ethical view of the world the way he needed it was pretty interesting.
Now, I see that my view on ethics is definitely the one that at least keeps me out of jail: WabiSabiLabi founder arrested in Italy
At least he gets press coverage (and blog coverageJ) for his platform

More Counter Kos time...It's not everyday that you get liberals to outright admit what the rest of the country already knows: liberals struggle with corruption/ethics/morals and they place a low priority on them.Well, leave it to the Daily Kos to produce two such liberals. As with the angry moosely2006 getting "disgusted" over a harmless joke, I almost put this post in our joke/humor blog, Through Right Eyes, because it sure struck me as funny. In ultrageek's diary entry from today, he admits that corruption and ethics are a low priority for Democrats (even though ethics played a big role in Republicans not turning out for the 2006 elections. As ultrageek says, "if we [liberals] lose focus on the issues people really give a shit about and focus all our energy on ethics, then we deserve to get booted out of power." (emphasis mine).Meanwhile, another Daily Kos writer, dengre, says just the opposite in another diary entry. Here's an excerpt (which supports how corruption played a big ro
Now there is scientific evidence that organic food is better for your health. But the main issue when you choose food should be what is better for the health of the planet. I choose organic food mainly because the way it is cultivated is more energy efficient and sustainable than the conventional methods. Yesterday when I did our weekly grocery shopping, I spent more than 50% on organic products. As long as I get food that is better for my family and the environment I don't care so much about the higher expenses. Choosing food has become a moral issue. clipped from www.guardian.co.ukEarly results from a £12m study showed that organic fruit and vegetables contained up to 40% more antioxidants than non-organic varieties, according to Professor Carlo Leifert at Newcastle University, who leads the EU-funded Quality Low Input Food project. Larger differences were found in milk, with organic varieties containing more than 60% more antioxidants and healthy fatty acids, he said. Here
By: Jeff CasmerToday, many people rely on computers to do homework, work, and create or store useful information. Therefore, it is important for the information on the computer to be stored and kept properly. It is also extremely important for people on computers to protect their computer from data loss, misuse, and abuse. For example, it is crucial for businesses to keep information they have secure so that hackers can't access the information. Home users also need to take means to make sure that their credit card numbers are secure when they are participating in online transactions. A computer security risk is any action that could cause lost of information, software, data, processing incompatibilities, or cause damage to computer hardware, a lot of these are planned to do damage. An intentional breach in computer security is known as a computer crime which is slightly different from a cypercrime. A cybercrime is known as illegal acts based on the internet and is one of the FBI's t
Last April, the Illinois House voted unanimously for an ethics bill that would restrict most businesses that contract with the state from making
campaign contributions to the officeholder who awards the contract. It also required contract bidders to say how much money they gave to office holder that awards the contract. But stil the Illinois Senate has not done anything with it. They say they have a better one alongwith Rod Blogojovich. But we still have not heard a peep out of them.Protecting Illinois sleaze -

Last spring, Illinois legislators finally appeared ready and eager
to raise ethics standards in state government. House members in April
overwhelmingly supported an ethics reform measure.
It whizzed out of the House on a 116-0 vote. More than t
The Second Amendment is having a moment. Students for Concealed Carry on Campus has organized a protest of concealed weapons bans at colleges. As part of the protest, students all over the country are wearing empty holsters this week, the O'Collegian reports. "It is a chance to draw attention to our cause," said one Oklahoma State University protester. Some opponents of the ban argue that carrying weapons makes campuses safer and point to the Virginia Tech shooting as an incident in which other students carrying weapons could have prevented more violence. "We think one person at the right place at the right time could have lessened or eliminated the body count," said a Miami University student.A number of university administrators disagree, saying guns can't possibly make campuses safer, even wondering whether the protest itself is disruptive or insensitive so soon after the Virgina Tech incident. But with proper deference to the Constitution, at least one University of Kentucky polic
Primarily, corporate ethics strategy embodies the ethical standards and values in an organization and the rationale upon how cold it be inculcated and maintained over time. Hence, it encompasses the two categories namely: compliance-oriented strategy and the integrity-oriented strategy. The real score of these can somehow help the organization gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of the employees on how they handle risk and how they adhere to the company’s commitment to ethics and compliance. To be effective, a certain company must obtain and procure these corporate ethics strategies specifically the integrity-oriented strategy, which focuses on self-governance according to guiding principles. This strategy also lies on the concept of organizational identity that includes not only commercial objectives, but also a set of organizational ideals and responsibilities. Ethical standards are inculcated and maintained through the organization’s central management systems, which encomp
Since I’ve been writing about ignorance, I thought a quote on a similar topic was in order. This quotation is from W. K. Clifford, an atheist philosopher and mathematician, who argued that faithis both irrational and immoral. You can read the (almost) full text of “The Ethics of Belief” online, if you’re interested. It was Clifford’s work that spurred William James to write “The Will to Believe,” which was previously on “Other People’s Words.” Though I now find Clifford’s strident tone off-putting, there was a time this quote was very important to me.
No simplicity of mind, no obscurity of station, can escape the duty of questioning all that we believe.
It is true that this duty is a hard one, and the doubt which comes out of it is often a very bitter thing. It leaves us bare and powerless where we thought were safe and strong. To know all about anything is to know how to deal with it under all circumstances. We feel mu
Experts say scenario is far worse than first predicted· Crackdown on marketing aimed at children urged Sarah Boseley, health editorMonday October 15, 2007 The Guardian Marketing junk food to children has to become socially unacceptable, a leading obesity expert will say today, warning that the food industry has done too little voluntarily to help avert what a major report this week will show is a "far worse scenario than even our gloomiest predictions". Professor Philip James, chairman of the International Obesity Taskforce thinktank, will say in a keynote speech that when it comes to public health the response of the food industry has so far been a case of "too little, too late". Today's conference of the National Obesity Forum comes on the eve of publication of a government-commissioned investigation into the scale of the obesity problem and what science can do to help tackle it. "The expected outcome of the Foresight Report on Obesity suggests

In a race, a business man should be aggressive and must be aware of the risk in his business and eventually must know how to deal with those encumbrances. He must know what strategy and plan he should do in order to surpass that problem. Taking up strategic management and putting it by heart would somehow help them solve and decipher their problems with regards to their business entity. The composition of being a successful strategic planner would require a lot of consideration as to how you discipline yourself and by embarking it in a right way.The discussion of our teacher regarding strategic management have somehow helped me understand and grasped the different aspects of it. He delved about the 4 resources to venture on business which encompass manpower, money, materials, and machines and concluded that the most important part among all is the manpower. We also thrashed out the real score about Business policy Case as to how to identify the problem, set objectives and so on. Busine

Is there an environmental ethic in our society? How bout in the international society? Should there be?These are all very real questions currently being asked by many. I think the answer is yes, there is an environmental ethic. The uncertainty arises in the extent that this ethic exists. For example, 30 or so years ago, there wasn't an American ethic that told us it was wrong to litter. Highways were often lined sporadically with trash, rivers scattered with garbage, etc. An old commercial helped spur a change - you know, the one with the Indian seeing all the litter and having the tear roll down his cheek.Well I think it's safe to say that between then and now, a definite ethic developed in our society. Laws might have helped to accelerate the development of this ethic (through fines and what-not), but at the root was our own conscience getting to us.This ethic has continued to develop and is now at a crossroads. One path leads to an ever-expanding environmental ethic, and th
I was once asked during a talk at a local Unitarian church, what is the basis for morality and ethics in the traditions and teachings I speak about? My answer was "no basis at all...morals and ethics are only temporary safeguards for those who do not know any better."
We give our children rules (”don’t play in the street”) in order to protect them and help them do the right things. But eventually, they learn why they should not play in the street (for example) and now the rule serves no purpose. You don’t give a mature adult the rule “don’t play in the street” – for they already know why not to play in the streets and they don’t need the rule.
Likewise, if there are people who do not know what doing the right thing is…then you give them rules (i.e. morality and ethical rules) to guide them. But for someone who has deep understanding…no rules are needed, ethically or morally. The right thing will be done through understanding.
