      Etching & Watercolor: Sure Temptation
Sure Temptation, 6 x 9 Etching & WatercolorThis piece was the result of a print-exchange with 12 fellow printmakers. We clipped los angeles yellow pages headers, and tossed them into a box. Each artist pulled a slip from the box, and created a print inspired by their selection; I pulled Sure Temptation. I hadn't pondered Eve's story too deeply before that print exchange, but after researching the details, I could imagine Eve, with innocent demeanor, and naive carriage, in the seconds before her first exchange with the serpent. This etching & watercolor is available for sale here. The yellow pages header, and rough sketches & ideas.Transferring the first parts of the drawing on the plate, through the ground, to prepare for the acid.

Carve up your iPhones: Laser-etching the iPhone Video
Apple iPhone owners will be able to get their iPhones laser-etched soon via a similar service that Apple do for the iPod soon (we would imagine), but for now you will have to get it done else where like one person did at Philip Torrone’s shop in New York. The video below shows an iPhone getting etched with some old-school flying toasters. So would you get your iPhone laser-etched? Whistler Month: The Thames Set, Etching Papers and watermarks
Limehouse (1859)Print (etching), 12.76x 19.9cm platemark; 14.0 x 21.4cm sheetJames Whistler (1834 - 1903)Art Gallery New South Wales (purchased 1898)Whistler was a very gifted printmaker and produced numerous etchings, lithographs and dry-points between the 1850s and the turn of the century. I love drawing but I have no experience of etching or making prints. However I think learning more about this aspect of Whistler (and printmaking processes - see end) will be one of the main benefits for me of this Whistler month - and this blog post is very much a record of my explorations.I'm also taking the opportunity to find more images of the etchings of the River Thames near my home - with images this time of Limehouse and Billingsgate. Looking at the ways different people have represented the River Thames is becoming a very strong area of artistic interest for me.The Thames Set - sixteen etchings of scenes on the ThamesI referred to the Thames set of etchings in my earlier Whistler Mont

Intaglio Etching & Watercolor: Imogen Heap
I'll be offline till Monday, May 21st. Here are some etching process shots in the meantime.Coating a beveled, sanded & polished zinc plate with hard ground.Using a Whistler's Needle (or a twisted scribe) to draw/scrape into the ground on the plate where I want to etch into the metal.Dipping the plate into an acid bath for 60 seconds. After cleaning the hard ground off the plate with solvents, I'm pushing Daniel Smith oil-based etching ink into the etched line work with a bondo scraper.Tarlatan cloth is used to wipe the ink from the top surface of the plate, and then newsprint buffs it a little more. This leaves ink settled beneath the surface, in the tiny wells bored by the acid.Soaked and blotted paper is laid on the inked & wiped plate, and rolled under a press at about 1800 pounds of pressure. The pulp of the paper is pushed into those little pores of ink, and pulled off the plate here...This is an artist's proof, and the process will continue from the beginning over & over; co

Dry Point Etching & Colored Pencil: Bird on her Shoulder
This is a sheet of acrylic, with an image scratched into the surface with an etching needle. Since no acid is used to bite the lines into the plate, it's called a dry-point etching. I used tightly rolled "tubes" of felt to push different colors of etching ink into the grooves before printing (called "a la poupee"). This is the first print, and I'll go back and add more details and dark tones to the plate before printing it again to see how it's coming along later this week.In the meantime, the first proof was colored with prismacolors, and it's hanging in the studio.Bird on her Shoulder 5 x 7 Dry Point Etching & Colored PencilAvailable here.
