One year after government websites in EU state Estonia were crippled by a series of cyber attacks, NATO has moved to set up a centre on cyber defence in the country's capital, Tallinn. On Wednesday (14 May), seven NATO members - Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Spain - signed a pact formally establishing a so-called Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.

The vast expanse of Russia ends abruptly down the middle of Lake Peipsi, where the Republic of Estonia begins. Topography on the Estonian side is muted. Should the lake level ever rise significantly, there is little to keep waters from completely inundating the country. The area is heavily farmed, and individual fields are often separated by small groves of forests. And while animals can still be seen pulling heavily laden carts, mostly Soviet-era tractors plow the fields.

Por la mañana me dirigí al pueblo de Haanja y fue directo al único lugar público que parecía existir en unos cuantos kilómetros a la redonda de este apartado lugar del sur de Estonia: la biblioteca. Ahí la mujer encargada se encantó de poder volver a practicar inglés y me facilitó toda una serie de detalles sobre la zona que ni por asombro aparecían en la Lonely Planet.La mujer me recomendó encarecidamente visitar Rouge y sin duda no andaba nada equivocada. El autobús pasa cuando le apetece y eso ocurre pocas veces. Así que me recomendó hacer vía a pie y a dedo por la carretera polvorienta que une Haanja a Rouge. Fueron unos 10 kilómetros de paseo serenado por el interior de unos bosques donde más de un elfo se quedaría gratamente sorprendido.Al llegar a Rouge me dirigí al único restaurante que aparece en la Lonely Planet. In April 2007 I hopped on a plane and headed to the Eastern European countries of Estonia and Russia. Here are some observations and thoughts on what I saw, heard, smelled, tasted, touched and experienced while traveling through these former Soviet Union countries.

You can actually walk to and from the airport. About a 20 minute stroll but absolutely possible. How do I know this? My friend Marni walked there to pick me up with her co-worker. Since I had bags in tow though we took the bus back into town.
Pubs and restaurants serve this garlic bread with a twist. The dish consists of fried dark rye bread with whole garlic cloves to rub on the bread with a side dipping sauce made of dill and yogurt. Very addictive but watch how much you rub the bread with garlic. A little goes a long way and you could be breathing fire for days if not careful.

The Background: I had narrowed down dinner to two locations and asked the concierge for the deciding vote. Troika it is! Particularly, I was excited because all the write-ups mentione pelmeni--and I have a soft spot for pelmeni after visiting Russia with my friend Aileen in 1998 and eating lots of delicious pelmeni everywere we went. Pelmeni, btw, are dumplings...they are like pierogi, or gyoza, or pot stickers, or well just dumplings.
The Entrance: I like it. It is busy and loud and fun. There's live music and singing coming from somewhere. Our server asks us if we'd like some vodka and pickles--we say yes immediately because my dad's new best friend--the server at Gloria--told us that we must have the vodka and pickles.
