      Russia,Poland and Estonia Holiday
If you were to travel to Europe where would you like to travel? I think European countries like Russia, Poland, Estonia, Finland are excellent to visit. They have history and art and architecture and I love these. I have heard that June and July are the best month for touring around Russia, Poland or Estonia. Although I have heard a lot about these countries I have never been there so I hope I will get a chance to travel to these countries one day. Looking at the picture I really like to be there, you know what I mean? But if I were to go I would surely check out the best prices for the tour. I don't want to get in trouble and want to make sure that everything runs perfect on my tour. I looked around and found a site that really could be useful in visa preparation, flight booking, hotel boo

      Along Estonia’s Lake Peipsi
The vast expanse of Russia ends abruptly down the middle of Lake Peipsi, where the Republic of Estonia begins. Topography on the Estonian side is muted. Should the lake level ever rise significantly, there is little to keep waters from completely inundating the country. The area is heavily farmed, and individual fields are often separated by small groves of forests. And while animals can still be seen pulling heavily laden carts, mostly Soviet-era tractors plow the fields. (more…) Share This Article

EUROPE: Estonia says "no" to Nord Stream pipeline construction
Estonia will not allow the construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline to go ahead in its economic waters, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said on September 20. "We decided long ago that we would say 'no' to this construction," Paet said in an interview on Estonian television. "There have never been disagreements on this issue in Estonia - we will never allow the construction of this pipeline in our economic waters in any case," Paet said."Nord Stream is evidently not needed, because in four or five years Russia will no longer be a gas exporter. With its rapidly thinning reserves of gas, Russia won't even be able to meet its own domestic demand. Or are we to suppose that Russia will export its gas and leave its own people without energy?" Estonian President Toomas Ilves said in an interview with the newspaper Postimees two weeks ago.Nord Stream is planned to carry natural gas between Vyborg, Russia, and Greifswald, Germany, through a pipeline across the Baltic Sea bed. Exploring Europe: Estonia and Russia
In April 2007 I hopped on a plane and headed to the Eastern European countries of Estonia and Russia. Here are some observations and thoughts on what I saw, heard, smelled, tasted, touched and experienced while traveling through these former Soviet Union countries. Tallinn, Estonia You can actually walk to and from the airport. About a 20 minute stroll but absolutely possible. How do I know this? My friend Marni walked there to pick me up with her co-worker. Since I had bags in tow though we took the bus back into town. Pubs and restaurants serve this garlic bread with a twist. The dish consists of fried dark rye bread with whole garlic cloves to rub on the bread with a side dipping sauce made of dill and yogurt. Very addictive but watch how much you rub the bread with garlic. A little goes a long way and you could be breathing fire for days if not careful. When you are in Tallinn it feels like you have gone back in time with the cobblestone streets and medieval fortress walls

      Estonia-Russia: Maskirovka Demasked?
Strange rumours come out of Moscow these days. Indeed, would one believe in all gossip on the current power struggle in Russia, the world as we know it would be transformed. It is obvious that competing politico-financial interests are producing an increasingly incoherent and incomprehensive political landscape for the upcoming 2007-2008 elections. This is especially true when it comes to effects on foreign policy.A recent rumour coming out of Moscow relates to the crisis between Russia and Estonia over the removal of the Bronze Soldier from central Tallinn. According to unofficial sources, some forces in Moscow were preparing a political initiative towards Estonia prior to the crisis to permanently defuse the explosive issue of this old soviet war monument. Thus, Moscow would actually have been preparing to offer Tallinn participation in moving the Bronze Soldier on the 9 May Soviet Victory day, provided that Russia would be allowed to play an active role in such a ceremony. Was M/S Estonia sunk by an explosion?
A new Swedish-German expert group on the 1994 M/S Estonia catastrophe does not exclude an explosion as cause of the shipwreck. Such a conclusion has so far been ruled out by all other investigations, but few explanations have been given for the fast course of events when the ship went down.On the evening of 27 September 1994, the Estline ferry M/S Estonia left Tallinn heading for Stockholm, with 989 people on board. Around midnight, the ship came into difficulties and at 00:23 hours sent out a distress call to ships in the vicinity. Exactly what happened after M/S Estonia's mayday is still in dispute, but the ship went down within the ensuing 20 minutes, taking with it 852 lives. It was by far the biggest ferry catastrophe ever in the Baltic Sea during peacetime. The catastrophe occurred little over a month after the last Russian troops had left Estonian soil. It thus came at an inconvenient moment for Estonia, as the country had just regained full sovereignty over its territory. Conse

      Estonia's New Coalition Government
After weeks of negotiations, an agreement on a new coalition government in Estonia was today finally reached. Thus, for the next four years, Estonia will be ruled by a government of Reformists, the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL), and the Social Democrats. That is, if the coalition partners will be able to see eye to eye in the long run.Until now, the track record for Estonian governments has for most part been less than a year in office. Still, the 4 March election results proved an exception from this rule, as the Prime Minister, Andrus Ansip, retained support for staying in office for the first time since Estonia regained independence in 1991. Consequently, the main goal of coalition talks seems to have been to maintain the political stability that the elections formed a basis for.Still, as previously reported, next to everything seemed up for grabs after the 4 March parliamentary elections. The only clear thing was that Prime Minister Ansip's Reform Party would take the lea

      What Government for Estonia?
Defying all odds and opinion polls, the Reform Party stands as victor of Estonia's parliamentary elections this Sunday. Thus, Savisaars populist Centre Party was beaten by a close 1.7% margin. Together, the two reluctant coalition partners now form a majority of votes in the Estonian Parliament - the Riigikogu. It is, however, too early to say if Reformists and Centrists will continue their government cohabitation. In essence, the upcoming government formation may present almost any combination of parties in a coalition cabinet.Sunday's election results must be characterised as a landslide victory for the Reformist Party, led by Prime Minister Andrus Ansip. The party went from 17.7% support (19 seats) in the 2003 parliamentary elections to 27.8% (31 seats) now, thus increasing its support by 10% of the electorate. Thus, the Reformists will dominate the 101 seats' parliament as its single largest party, and Ansip has also been asked to form a new government by President Ilves. Ansip

Estonia - 852 souls are still waiting for the truth.
The loss of the passenger ferry m/s Estonia in hard weather in the Baltic Sea on September 28, 1994 cost 852 lives (only 95 bodies have been recovered). About half of them were Swedes, the rest mostly Finns and Estonians. This was the worst disaster at sea in the Baltic since the sinking by a Soviet submarine of the steamer Wilhelm Gustloff on 30 January 1945, where some 9,000 German civilians, most of them children, and wounded troops fleeing the advancing Red Army in Eastern Prussia is believed to have drowned. Sweden is a small country, and almost everyone know or know of someone who perished in the icy 13°C (55°F) waters that night. Estonia, being an even even smaller country, felt the impact of the shipwreck as something close to a national trauma. The ship, and the connection to the west it provided, was a matter of national pride in the young democracy recently liberated by the fall of the Soviet Union. From the moment the Estonia settled on the bottom, there has been wild spe
