As I puttered around the corrals yesterday, several thoughts were going through my mind. The main one was that people will see and hear ONLY what they want. For example, if you say that their horse has good bone, they may interpret that as you having said, “Breed Her! She will have world class foals [...]
I 've always known that my acquisition of Gazi was what Joani calls a "G-dincidence".. He opened the doors and we let him in.. . Few breeds of horse have captured the imagination like the Arabian horse has. In the days of early history, Arabian horses were prized as warhorses. The Old Testament in the Bible contains many references and descriptions to these horses, the most notable being in the b

We got to try out a new product this weekend called the FURminator deShedding Equine Tool Fredi, Myself & Perry all flipped for it.When I got my FURminator in the mail it was like Christmas so I ripped open the package. Paraphrasing with all due respect from the infamous Stephen Covey. It "don't come natural" to everyone ... horseback riding, that is. And just because it takes some effort, time, and work doesn't mean you won't end up being a good rider. Trust me , there are days I feel like aha.. I've got it ... just before I have another "unforced dismount" that the judges score a 10. But I digress. As adults,
Equine jobs seem to fit only those who love, breathe and think about horses most of the day. It is uncommon for people who "don't care much for horses" to spend the whole day in the company of these wonderful animals. There are many avenues of equine employment as horses not only need vets, jockeys, grooms and riders, they also need farm and stable managers and people to look after their foals. I

A little bit of history on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon was refreshing after being cooped up in my apartment all day. Museums are usually not at the top of my to-do list, but today was an exception. The Equine Museum of Japan and Horse Memorial Park are two very wonderful places I think everyone should visit because here is where western-style horse racing began in Japan, over a hundred years ag
Western Style horse racing first came to Japan back in the 1800s, just at the time when this country was beginning to open up to the world. But before that, the history of the horse in Japan, goes back centuries. The horse of choice back then was a cow because only rich people were able to afford to have a horse which in those days was the Samurai class. In this picture, taken at Negishi Equine, i

At the US Eventing Association Annual Convention in Colorado last week, the Christine E. Stafford Eventing Groom of the Year Award went to Jeff Beshear, who gallantly grooms for his wife, Emily Mastervich Beshear of Brickland Farm of Somerset, Virginia. Jeff, who is a native of Lexington, Kentucky, probably does a lot more than just groom the horses. If his name rings a bell, it is because he is a partner in the Old Dominion Equine Associates in Keswick, near Charlottesville, Virginia. He compl

The first things you need to know about becoming an equine artist are some basic rules about image use. As an artist you must learn to work using live subjects, capturing your scenes, or using a camera to take your own photos. Your unique way of seeing the world of the horse shines through when you use your own reference materials. Another way to create an image, is to call upon your imagination. Let it flow and see what appears on the canvas or paper.

I think it was last Friday and Steve and I were out running errands. I was telling Steve that I still had half a loafing shed to shovel. I also mentioned that I don't mind the smell of horse manure. He shook his head at me and said that I was weird. Now I retorted that I believe that there isn't a true horse person out there in the world that doesn't mind the smell of horse poop or might even like it. And the smell of a horse. When I'm out doing anything with my horses, I always bury my face in their neck and take a deep breath in. I love the smell of horses. To me, there's nothing else like it. Now Steve suggested that I write a post about it and just see how many of you out there like the smell of a horse and all that goes with it. So what do you all say? Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html

I have a mate who’s considered pursuing this career path with horses – in between stud work, polocrosse and farriery. He’s mentioned that to get into training in Australia can be difficult as not many are taken in each year to receive formal training. Still, I’d never really followed up possibilities or thought about this profession. Have found a few courses and listed information below.Anatomy has always interested me and suddenly a 3 month course in New Zealand seems a perfect way to focus on that interest and visit a country I really want to see.New Zealand:3 Month course, limited places.Based in Pukekohe in the Franklin District, 50kms south of Auckland City Centre, NZ., accommodation provided. When I think horse photos, the main name that comes to mind for me is Bob Langrish. Every year for the past decade or more I have been given a horse calendar as part of a Christmas present and every year, the photos have been by this photographer.Have just stumbled across another who has some brilliant works - Robert Vavra.*These pictures from the Robert Vavra site and copyright to him.Horse Photography is another avenue that could be explored as a possible career relating to horses. I'm not aware of a particular course relating to learning how to specifically photograph horses; but am sure there are many animal or live subject courses focusing on photographing moving creatures. If you're already taking shots, perhaps you haven't considered the possibility of having these published, and why not do so online? There are sites out there that take in people's photos and publish them in catalogs/books that are sold online. They can also be publicised on popular sites and possibly pro
I've recently read an article in John Lyon's Perfect Horse about equine massage. This is something I've been doing with my horses for years. Every one of them, even those who were just passing through. I especially concentrate on the their shoulders and the horses have never complained. I find that it is a great way to bond and build trust. I've never read an instruction book or anything on how to do it. It just came naturally and seemed to work. You can tell whether they enjoy it or not. They really like the shoulder area. I start at the top and work my way in a counter clockwise circle, using the heel of my hand and walking the circle larger with my fingers and back to the heel of my hand. They love it. Before you know it, they've got sleepy eyes and their head has dropped. Wish I could afford one for myself, a massage, that is.Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html

Boy am I having fun playing rather than behaving and heading off to bed. Have been strolling through horse sites/blogs and found one that listed horse related books that the person owned/had read and out of curiosity clicked on the link. This lead me to Librarything.com - a site where you can build an online catalog of all the books you have, drawing information from the likes of Amazon.com. Now, as someone who has recently posted about building up my horse related library, this was totally appealing! Curious to know what I've got in my library? Check out the search I have placed on the right hand column of this page a bit further down. Example, type in the word 'polo' and see what happens... totally cool!:DYou can also have on your blog/site a random show of books in your library like so:"You Know You're A Horse Person When... ...on rainy days, you organize the tack room, not the house. When I was a little girl, thoughts of horses filled my every waking moment. I dreamed and schemed of the horse I would own, how in the world I would actually buy that horse and where in my suburban back yard I would keep my dream equine. My horse would have a golden mane, knicker softly when he saw me and carry me on pounding hooves over open fields and valleys…..Well, in reality, I was one of six children whose hard working single mom struggled to cover the basic costs of keeping us all fed and clothed. Actually owning a horse was most certainly a dream, but that didn't stop me from happily imagining my world with a horse beside me.I carried that dream all through my childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood. I volunteered at various stables just to be near horses, to touch and smell them, revel in that equine presence. Until finally when I turned 40 (!!!) I decided, "its now or never", and purchased my first horse! Equine number one was a huge, black retired dressage
