APA: Depressed inpatients may benefit from drug-metabolizing enzyme testing
By John Gever, Staff Writer, MedPage Today WASHINGTON, May 6 — Testing depressed inpatients for abnormalities in cytochrome P450 drug-metabolizing enzymes may be warranted, a researcher said here. About 20% of patients hospitalized for depression had at least three defects in CYP450 genes, reported Gualberto Ruaño, MD, PhD, of Genomas Inc. in Hartford, Conn., at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting here. He said these patients tended to do poorly on initial treatment with standard drugs. More... © 2004-2008 MedPage Today, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

What sorts of things influence enzyme induction
What sorts of things influence enzyme induction? Well, the dose of the inducer. I’ve already talk about age. Genetics can … we can have slow acetylators and fast acetylators. For example, when we think about monitoring procainamide levels. We monitor procainamide in NAPA. NAPA stands for N-acetyl-procainamide and the reason we do that is because [...]

      Enzyme Commission (EC) Numbers
In the early 1950’s so many new enzymes were being discovered in the burgeoning field of biochemistry that enzyme nomenclature was in danger of getting out of hand. With no guidelines on how to name enzymes, researchers simply chose their own. Some enzymes were given names, like diaphorase or Zwischenferment, that conveyed nothing about the reaction they catalyzed and enzymes with similar function were given names that implied they were different. It was all very confusing and clearly if the situation continued it would be disastrous for our attempts to study enzymes. (more…)

      Enzyme Extraction of Essential Oils
Essential oils are chemicals that form the odoriferous essences of a number of plants. They are derived from parts of a plant, which can be the flowers, fruits, leaves, roots, or bark. Essential oils have been used since history. In ancient Assyria, Babylonia, Israel and other civilizations, essential oils were possessions. They were used as [...]

Dogs With Skin Or Digestive Problems Require Enzyme Support
Article Title: Dogs With Skin Or Digestive Problems RequireEnzyme SupportAuthor: Janie KnetzerYour dog's diet can have a great impact on a variety of factorsin his health. A dog that is not receiving adequate nutritionfrom his diet can be prone to gas, flatulence, lack of energyand skin problems. The dog's coat may become dull and, if he is a working dog, hisperformance may be affected. This is due, in great part to avariance that many dog owners have imposed on dogs when theydomesticated them. In essence, it is a nutritional deficiencythat, though unintentional, can lead to health and digestiveissues. In many cases, digestive enzymes for dogs can correct orsubstantially reduce the problems. Enzymes are substances foundin the body that have the ability to induce chemical reactionsor accelerate these processes. Enzymes are broken down into twoparts, one is a protein called apoenzyme and the other is anon-protein. The non-protein can either be a coenzyme orcofactor. E

Review: Skincare: Dr. Bragi Marine Enzyme
I was contacted by Paris (Yes that’s her name!) who offered me to review a revolutionary skincare by Dr. Bragi. The item is an age management enzyme that promises to rejuvenate, moisturise, and be anti-inflammatory. I was intrigued, so she kindly sent me some samples to try. Each sample sachet came in a small little clear square plastic packet with a tiny bit of serum in it, about 1ml. Initially, I thought each sachet would last maybe 1 use. However, I was wrong. This clear enzyme serume has no smell and no colour. It is very viscous and a teeny tiny bit is more than enough to cover the whole face. The directions are to use it both day and night, but I found that it was a tad too sticky for day, so I only used it at night. With just using it once a day, one little sachet lasts about 1 week. Amazing! On the skin, the serum goes on slightly emollient. The skin will feel oily if you apply too much so care must be taken to apply only a very thin film on the skin. What I did was to sq

Enzyme Discovery Sheds Light On Vitamin D
Surprising findings by Queen’s researchers have shed new light on how the “sunshine vitamin” D – increasingly used to treat and prevent cancer and other diseases – is broken down by our bodies. “The effectiveness of vitamin D therapy is partly dependent on how quickly it will be broken down,” says Biochemistry professor Glenville Jones, an expert in the field of vitamin D metabolism. “By studying the enzyme responsible for breaking down the vitamin, we hope to develop a way to prevent this from happening by blocking that response.”  First observed in Dr. Jones’s lab by undergraduate Biochemistry student Brendan O’Leary, the discovery reveals that changing a single amino acid in the hydroxylase enzyme will cause it to take a completely different pathway. Although scientists have known for 25 years that the enzyme is capable of taking two different pathways, until now they could not explain why this occurs.   Earlier study of the enzyme had shown that its pathway

Scientists Discover Role of Enzyme in DNA Repair
Scientists from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and Integrative Bioinformatics Inc. have made an important discovery about the role of an enzyme called ataxia telangiectasia mutated protein (ATM) in the body’s ability to repair damaged DNA. NIAMS and NCI are part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). When DNA within a cell is damaged, the cell’s protective mechanism must do one of two things: repair the defect or “commit suicide,” says Rafael Casellas, Ph.D., an investigator in NIAMS’ Molecular Immunology and Inflammation Branch and leading author of a new paper describing the discovery. But the way in which the cell performs these protective functions has been largely a mystery, says Casellas, whose research is beginning to unravel this mystery. Casellas’ research focuses largely on certain genes that are deliberately broken and repaired as part of the immune response. Through a tight

Blocking Wheat Gluten Toxicity With Digestive Enzyme Pill Might Have Prevented My Wife's Neurological Symptoms From Accidental Gluten Exposure
Taking a pill to allow eating gluten is a very appealing idea to people suffering from Celiac disease. Trying to maintain a gluten free diet for life, especially while traveling or having an active social life is nearly impossible. However, for those with Celiac disease, gluten exposure can cause serious symptoms and increase the risk of numerous cancers, especially lymphoma. It is unlikely a pill will become available in the very near future that would allow an unrestricted diet. However, in the February 2007 issue of the journal Gut, Dr. Cerf-Bensussan et al. from France, review the latest research that has progressed to the early stages of developing a gluten digestive enzyme pill. Oral proteases, enzymes that break down proteins, are being developed that target the toxic wheat gluten protein product gliadin that causes Celiac disease. A pill combining two or more of these digestive enzymes may allow people with Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity to eat gluten occasionally durin
